Last year, we released our first album, entitled simply “The Yanks” (or “The Four Faced Liar” depending on whom you ask). It was recorded during the legendary Catskills Irish Arts Week in a cabin in the mountains. The album captured the raw energy and spontaneity of four friends playing the music we love. Thanks to your overwhelming support, our first recording enjoyed the #1 selling spot on Bandcamp.com on its first day of release, passing up Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan.
Since that unexpected moment, we’ve been receiving rave reviews around the United States, further developing our music, and planning our next album. We’re thinking bigger now and we want to make this album the best it can be – that’s why we’re asking for your support!
We have booked time this January at Grammy-winning engineer Glenn Barratt’s studio near Philadelphia. He offers a full range of microphones and equipment and has worked with artists like Elton John, Diana Ross, Mick Moloney, and Cherish the Ladies. We are aiming to capture pristine sound fidelity while still focusing on the warmth and energy present in our first album.
For the first time ever, we are bringing a few carefully chosen guests into the Yanks fold. Our good friend Josh Dukes will be onboard on the ceili drums for a few tracks. A student of the great Jimmy Kelly himself, Josh was in the studio while we recorded the first album and, as anyone who was seen him live can attest, adds a huge boost to the excitement level (fast forward to 2:23 below).
We will also be working with a few singers who will complement the core Yanks sound. We can’t reveal their names yet but we know you’ll love them.
One other thing to mention – if our campaign doubles its goal of $10,000 and somehow reaches $20,000, we will… wait for it… wrestle in spaghetti. That’s right. Does anyone want to see that? We sure hope not.
We thank you for your support thus far and we hope that you will join us in making the best album we possibly can. Everything we do is a result of your kind support and we really appreciate that. We are making the music we want to make – without a record label – and we couldn’t be happier.
Thank you from The Yanks!
Who are you guys?
We are Isaac Alderson, Dylan Foley, Dan Gurney, and Sean Earnest. Isaac (flute and uilleann pipes), a three-time All-Ireland champion, has performed with Eileen Ivers, Comas, and Celtic Crossroads. Dylan (fiddle) is also a multiple time All-Ireland champion and is a former student of Rose Flanagan and Brian Conway. He has toured with Mick Moloney and John Whelan. Dan (button accordion) has played with Dolores Keane, Brian McGrath, and Johnny Ringo McDonagh, and his debut album was named to the Top 10 of 2011 by the Irish Echo. He has also appeared on Public Radio International. Sean (guitar and bouzouki) has performed with Teada, the Paul McKenna Band, Cathie Ryan, and Colleen Raney.
Do you know what you’re doing?
We like to think so :) Between the four of us, we’ve recorded on over twenty albums and spent countless hours in the studio. We’ve worked with some of the top engineers, photographers, and designers in the business and we’re really looking forward to creating a beautiful project.
When can I redeem my rewards?
We expect that the album will be released sometime around March or April. We’ll make sure that you get it at the same time – if not before – the general public does. If you opted for one of the custom rewards, we’ll coordinate with you to schedule a good time to do it.
Risks and challenges
Making an album is a long and often messy process which involves a number of collaborators. Luckily we've made over twenty albums between us and have quite a bit of experience when it comes to the studio. We are positive that unexpected difficulties will arise, but we'll power through them and make sure that we end up with a great final product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
