About this project

Red Riding Hood’s vendetta

A twisted fable in a rich, fantasy setting of smoke-spewing factories and evil forests, Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries is an action-platforming fairy tale of death, industrial greed and vengeance. Coming to PC in 2015.

A cinematic platformer

We signed up for a well-balanced cocktail of three successful gameplay ingredients: some good old-fashioned action platforming on a 2.5D playground, fun combo-based hack ‘n slash combat (against some pretty deranged fairy tale enemies) and rewarding environment puzzles (exploring the beautiful sceneries to the max).

Set in an attractive fantasy universe and topped off with a surprising take on the Red Riding Hood tale as you know it, Woolfe promises an entertaining, aesthetic experience.

  • 2.5D Action-Platforming - Woolfe's 2.5D levels combine the simplicity of sidescrolling gameplay with three-dimensional worlds to explore and puzzles to solve.
  • Fast, Axe-Wielding Combat – Armed with her trusty axe, Red will need to skillfully execute combos to strike at her foes' weaknesses. A mindless hack-'n'-slasher this is not.
  • Deranged Fairy Tale Bosses – Woolfe's boss-battles are the creatures of nightmares. Buckle up for a bloody encounter with “familiar faces” such as The Pied Piper, a monstrous Pinocchio and a Creeping Beauty.
  • A Rich, Visual Experience Woolfe's multi-layered, atmospheric artwork was inspired by masters of imagination, including Tim Burton and Dutch painter Anton Pieck.
  • A twisted fairy tale story - Our take on the Red Riding Hood legacy is not your ordinary bedtime story. If you thought the original versions of the story (not the blockbuster derivates) were cruel, think again!

And with your support, we will add another -magical- feature

  • Harness Magical Abilities – In our ideal scenario, Red Riding Hood can do more than swing an axe. She is blessed with superhuman skills that help her overcome opponents. Conjure the power of a mystical shadow wolf to battle your enemies. Teleport to bypass enemies and locked doors.
  • Join the army - As you might have noticed in our trailer, Red Riding Hood has to fight her way past thousands of Toy Soldiers. At the moment they are all quite generic: they have the same strength, speed, skills, armor, weapons etc… With this Kickstarter campaign we want to give YOU the opportunity to customize your own tin soldier and raise the gameplay bar!

In the process of mapping out Red Riding Hood’s odyssey, we browsed books and websites for fairy tale inspiration. We stumbled upon many a surprising fact, especially when digging up the original versions of well known stories.

Did you know for example that initially Pinocchio was quite an ***hole rather than the childproof rascal Disney introduced to the audience? In Antonio Collodi’s Le avventure de Pinocchio, the wooden wannabe-boy was accused of killing both his mother and father, and his ‘boyish pranks’ eventually led to him being hung. No happily ever after indeed.

Little Red Riding Hood’s origins turned out to be equally disturbing: in some versions she was tricked into eating her own grandma, in others the wolf tricked the girl into bed after ordering her to perform a striptease.

It’s these raw and rather cruel storylines that inspired us while developing Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries’ plot, its main characters and enemies.

This is not a fairy tale. There’s nothing fair about it.

Four years ago, Red Riding Hood’s father Joseph, lead engineer for Woolfe Industries, died in a work accident. At least, that’s what his family was told. All grown-up and cried out, our heroine is ready to unveil the truth and present the bill for her tragic loss.

She leaves her Granny and her safe place, the forest, and heads back to the city, which she finds paralyzed with fear and scarred by a plague of kidnappings. B.B. Woolfe, CEO of Woolfe Industries, rules the place with an iron fist and an ever present army of henchmen. The fearless young amazon engages in a violent vendetta against the megalomaniac, who turns out to hide secrets even darker than she could have imagined.

First came the artwork, then came the rest. When Davy Penasse -now lead 3D artist- applied for a job at GRIN, the visual atmosphere of a Red Riding Hood demo in his portfolio instantly caught our attention. It featured a dark, enchanted forest, with evil trees attacking a little girl in a red cape. Starting from this 10 second clip, we began developing a visual style with lots of fantasy, clair obscur lighting, a dramatic colour pallette and hints of steampunk. Old fairy tale books were the main source of inspiration for character development. As for the environment: yes, we love Tim Burton (can you tell? Seriously?!), but Dutch painter Anton Pieck was an even greater influence in developing the Woolfe Universe.

Anton who?

In an artistic era where it was ‘cool’ to join one of the many trending  ‘-isms’, Anton Pieck (1895 -1987) stubbornly developed his own romantic-nostalgic style. While art critics weren’t generally his greatest fans, the public responded wildly enthusiastic to his signature fairy tale illustrations.  In 1952, he even designed an entire theme park, De Efteling, which is one of the Netherlands’ most popular amusement parks to date.

CONCEPT ART

Exploring the Woolfe universe

The story of Little Red Riding Hood traditionally covers the path between her parental home to Grandma’s house in the woods. Set in an era of industrial change, Woolfe’s universe features quite a few additional hotspots and environments. Chronologically, you’ll navigate through:

  • The City: Red begins her vendetta in the city, where she hides in a dusty attic room. From this operating base she starts looking for answers in every corner of the city: from the residential area, through slums and sewers, towards the harbour.
  • The Forest: In the forest -where Red grew up in Granny’s treehouse- evil gradually grew over happy memories and picturesque sceneries. The woods are now dominated by carnivorous plants, scary fairies and other freaks of nature. In the Thorn Valley, even Sleeping Beauty succombed to the dark side.
  • The Mines: The deeper underground she travels, the dirtier the secrets our heroine digs up. Descending into Woolfe Industries’ vast network of mines, Red Riding Hood is confronted with quite a few shocking revelations… and evil dwarves, of course.
  • The Factory: The factory once employed hundreds of citizens, until machinery and mechanical manpower took over. This absence of people turned out to be pretty convenient when Red’s father Joseph, Woolfe’s lead engineer, was killed in an ‘accident’ here. Will Red survive this hostile environment?

Because YOU have great GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Back in january 2013, we set out to create a fun action-platformer that offered a dark twist on a timeless fairy tale. To say that we fell passionately in love with the project would be an understatement. What we didn't expect was that so many others would share that passion, spreading our first trailer for Woolfe around the world and voting us through Greenlight in a mere five days! With every step we took, the bar was raised. Unfortunately, our budget wasn’t…

Because WE have some GREAT FEATURES up our sleeve

While at this point much of the core gameplay is in place and with the current funding at our disposal, we could continue through development as-is. But, we want Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries to be something truly special. Kickstarter gives us the opportunity to include some excellent features that would otherwise have to be sacrificed  and the opportunity for our supporters to (quite literally) be a part of the game.

1. WOOLFE MAGIC POWERS

Let's add some magic! One of the things we had to cut from our original plan because of budget limitations is MAGIC. Instead of only using melee combat, we believe Red Riding Hood should be able to use magical powers to solve puzzles and defeat her enemies.

Some of the magical powers we want to include:

  • Animal Instinct - Heightened senses -such as vision and smell- help you in detecting environmental clues.
  • Shadow trance - Ability to submerge in your surroundings and become almost invisible.
  • Smoke teleport - Disappear and reappear at a different location. Even move through objects and closed doors.
  • Wolf power - A set of attack modes using a mystical shadow wolf.

Of course, it's not enough to simply tack magical powers into the existing gameplay. What fun would that be? We need to ensure that magic is incorporated into level designs, enemy encounters, puzzles and the story in ways that feel natural and exciting for the player.

This would of course mean a whole lot of extra challenges and workload for the following team departments:

  • Writing - In order to make this magic mode make sense, we’ll need to incorporate its origin into the storyline and gradually explain why our protagonists posesses these superhuman abilities. Was she cursed at birth? Did a wizard or fairy bless her with these skills? Will she only use her magic for good purposes or… will it draw her to the dark side? You see, the options are unlimited!
  • Programming & level design - Building an in-game teleport mechanic is a lot easier than making one in real life, but still, this involves a lot of technical challenges. And if we want to make the magic abilities feel like they are a genuine part of the gameplay, our levels, puzzles and fights should constantly be aware of and use these new game mechanics.
  • Concept art & 3D modelling - All visual elements needed to evoke this sense of magic will be handcrafted with lots of love. Our artists can hardly wait to pick up their magic brushes and start creating.

2. BUILDING THE WOOLFE ARMY

Everyone backing our game will receive access to the Woolfe Army editor -aka Online Toy Soldier Editor- and their own in-game enemy to pimp and personalize. Every Toy Soldier in the game will be the virtual reflection of a Kickstarter backer. And everyone will encounter their own creation somewhere in the game!

You will be able to upgrade, personalize and improve your soldier to become a worthy opponent

Every time your soldier is victorious against Little Red Riding Hood or gets killed the stats will be logged. Your soldier will receive skill points for every battle he fights and a bonus for every battle he wins.

These skill points will allow you to upgrade & improve your soldier and strengthen the Woolfe Army, making the game gradually harder for everybody playing - including yourself.

You GET the stats, you SET the stats!

Use your skill points to enhance specific Toy Soldier skills:

  • Health: Increase your soldier's health so he can last longer in a battle.
  • Strength: Make your soldier kick ass. Hard.
  • Speed: Max this skill to make Red run for her life.
  • Aggression: Anger management issues, anyone?
  • Evasion: Missed... try again! Sometimes good defense is the best offence.
  • Armor: Upgrade your soldier's armor so he can take Red's beatings with the greatest of ease .

Visual upgrades:

  • Color schemes: Make it easier to recognize your soldier in battle with a unique color scheme.

3. QUALITY UPGRADE

Some extra pocket money would also allow us to lift the entire project a level higher. Yes, we are perfectionists, and we're not afraid to look at our project with a critical eye - as we know you will too. Two things in particular need some serious improvement:

Combat - We're well aware that our combat mechanics still need a lot of work. A smarter AI and more realistic and challenging combat/combo experiences would really take Woolfe's gameplay to the next level.

Animation - As you've probably noticed in our video, the animations for Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries are not yet up to par. At the moment we're working with the means and skills we have at our disposal, but we'd love to have a talented professional join us for a while to rework the animations. Both the in-game animations (the way Red walks, jumps, climbs etc) and the narrative cut scenes would really benefit from a quality upgrade.

Where's the money going?

About GRIN

GRIN was founded in 2002 as a research and development studio for online and browser-based games and applications. For over a decade, GRIN’s interactive creations were used for installations, events, campaigns and educational purposes - mainly for clients. Over the past few years, GRIN invested in its creative independency with a series of mobile games for preschoolers and now Woolfe, the studio’s first big indie-title for PC and console. Though diverse in outcome, GRIN’s portfolio is characterized by an insatiable hunger for new technologies and opportunities in interactive storytelling.

The Woolfe pack

Davy Penasse is our lead artist and the one who got us into trouble. When applying for a job at GRIN (he didn’t get it), his portfolio contained a little demo with a girl in a red cape. It blew us away… and the rest is history. A man of few words but brilliant artwork!

Jelle Voet is GRIN’s lead programmer. His code is equally layered and poetic as the sandwiches he crafts during lunch (seriously, you should see his edible masterpieces!). Within our team, Jelle is also known as ‘the life saver’.

Yana Roggeman, programmer. She brings a smile to everybody's face every morning. Our youngest and most cheerful team member! Working mostly on integration of interface elements at the moment.

Steven Melis, 3D artist and level designer, is basically the architect of the Woolfe universe. Frustrated when you encounter a tricky jump or puzzle? Blame him :-) As his Ducati surely knows, Steven is always up for a good challenge!

Yasmin Van de Werf, storyteller, was only 7 when she published her first novel, an instant playground bestseller. After exploring the fields of journalism and advertising, she joined GRIN to ghostwrite the diaries of Woolfe’s vengeful heroine.

Bram Sels, our concept artist, is -we believe- one of Belgium’s best kept secrets, so we’re proud to have him on our team. For the fans: Bram is also the lead singer in a heavy metal band. Oh, and in case you have any questions about art history, this parttime high school teacher is your man!

Hail to the interns!

For the past year, a small army of interns assisted us in creating all things Woolfe. Big thumbs up to Bruno Lebrun, Filip Van Mieghem, Baptiste Deboutte, Rufus Verswijvel, Lieze Everaert and Bas Bergfeld.

And to complete the credits...

Woolfe couldn’t have done without: Bart Lommelen (art & graphics), Joannes Truyens (story), Yana Roggeman (code), Demis Holvoet (research), Emilio Vit (props), Sam Verschraegen (animations), Tom Bleys (music), Michelle Sparks (voice acting), Richard Van Eck (consultancy).

Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries was granted funding, covering the production cost of the basic game (minus the 'magic, the quality upgrade and user integrated content / customized toy soldiers; in short, minus everything we're kindly asking you to support us for).

At this point, we've already finished the first chapter, which is about 1/3rd of the game and have started production of the second chapter.

An overview of what happened and what's to come...

APRIL 2013: Prototype Funding for Chapter 1

Once upon a time... we wrote a request for funding to the Flemish Audiovisual Fund asking for support to develop a Red Riding Hood inspired platform game called Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries

In April last year the funding was granted. It was not a large budget, not enough for the game we had in mind. But, combined with our own resources it allowed us to develop a small demo and a trailer. This was the beginning of our very own fairy tale...

FEBRUARY 2014: Steam Greenlight

At this time our game was really starting to take shape and we needed to know if the gamer community was going to love it as much as we did.

We were overwhelmed by the response. Woolfe was Greenlit in just 5 days! We looked it up, only a handful of games had ever been greenlit this fast!

MARCH 2014: Game Connection

At the beginning of this year, we stumbled upon Game Connection's call for entries. At that point we had little more than a first trailer and some demo footage to show, but -even so- we managed to convince the judges earning us a top 5 nomination in the PC and console category.

Even though we didn't go home with an award, Game Connection (which took place during GDC in San Fransisco) earned us a lot of contacts, insights and even a handful of publishers who were ready to sign us.

Back in Belgium, weighing our options, we decided to take a big and scary risk: we kindly thanked the publishers for their interest and chose to stay on the independent path, the only one that would allow us to finish the game exactly how we envisioned it.

MAY 2014: Full game funding

Shortly after our San Fransisco adventure, we sat around the table with PMV - Culture Invest, a Belgian investors organization. Woolfe (and the international attention the project received, both on Steam and Game Connection) had caught their eye and stolen their heart. After some talks, they decided to grant us an additional loan that would enable us to finish the game in its basic form.

JUNE 2014: FEATURED BY XBOX AT E3

"Hi, this is Microsoft speaking. We saw your trailer in San Fransisco. Would you like to be featured at our E3 XBOX event?"

And then some awkward silence on our end of the phone. Once it dawned on us that this wasn't a prank phone, it was full speed ahead for our 15 seconds of fame at the ID@XBOX media event. While money didn't allow us to actually walk the green carpet, we got goosebumps watching our project showcased on the livestream.

QUARTER 1, 2015: PC RELEASE

QUARTER 2, 2015: CONSOLE RELEASE (PS4 / XB1)

Risks and challenges

We are very pleased to announce that we were granted a loan that will allow us to complete the development of the basic game.
So no matter what, Woolfe will get released!

If we get in the extra features depends on you...

FAQ

  • Yes, we'll send them by regular mail, in an envelope ;)

    Last updated:
  • Please check our first update about this, but... the short answer is YES.
Once we secure our initial funding we will add add-on's. We’re thinking about a physical art book, posters, the boxed game, a Red Riding Hood cape and we’ve even been doing tests with various 3D prints. (More tips & idea’s welcome)

    Last updated:
  • We have already secured funding to allow the development of XBOX ONE and PS4 ports.
However, this Kickstarter only guarantees* the PC version.
    Why? Two reasons:
    1. We have never built a console game before and have no idea if we can get it working.
    2. We do not yet know if we are able to provide keys (without extra cost for us).

But if we do the port and are able to provide keys, every backer can request an extra key for the console version of their choice (free of charge).

*We don't want to make a promise we can't live up to.
ps. Our XBOX dev kits have arrived and we will start testing soon.

    Last updated:
  • Well, we started developing Woolfe in the UDK engine, that does not support Mac. Recently we upgraded to UE3, which seems to support building for Mac (as was brought to our attention by a backer).
The thing is we have not budgeted the extra development time and cost to do the port. But if we do find the funds, do a port and are able to provide keys, every backer can request an extra key for a Mac version (free of charge).
