***Update - We Got a Building!***
We secured a building! We have been working on it getting a place for months and now we finally got one. Our building is in SW Detroit and has been abandoned for almost 10 years. Being as it was vacant for so long it needs considerable repairs before we can open shop. Thieves stole all the electrical wiring, plumbing, and gas lines. The chimney is leaning and needs to be taken out. And the back wall will need to be taken down and rebuilt. We updated our budget below to show how much everything will cost related to our proposed goal. With your help we can get this place in shape and increase the impact we can have on our city!
We are creating a Kickstarter so we can expand our production while we try to launch our products nationally. Our city has experienced an unprecedented abandonment. Once a city of over 2 million now there are just under 700,000 residents. There are almost 80,000 abandoned buildings and 1,000's of vacant lots that are targets for illegal dumping. It is a major problem that hinder's the city's effort in revival.
Living in the city it is disheartening to see your neighborhood used as an illegal dumping site. It is very evident that the city is changing for the better. And Woodward Throwbacks is our way to help with the progression of the city.
By reaching our goal we will be able to fix our building and to upgrade our equipment. This will allow us to increase our production, thus giving us a chance to take more raw materials off the streets.
Why Reclaimed wood?
Our establishment believes in making sustainable products. We feel that the reclaimed wood makes every piece unique. Though our materials are inconsistent our process is not. Every product is thoughtfully designed so it can be made with all types of wood, as well as being mass produced. This makes for a line of designs that are consistent in shape but constantly changing in appearance.

WITH YOUR HELP!
We appreciate all backers on this Kickstarter, we are just as excited as you are! This has been a long and eventful journey so far, and we are ready to take the company to the next chapter. We have built this company from the ground up with basically no capital. To get where we want to be we need your help. Businesses have to start practicing sustainability, especially in manufacturing. We think our processes can help bring many more sustainable products to the market. With your help we can up our production and increase the amount of materials we clean up in our city. Below are the estimated costs for the repairs on our building.
- Rebuilt wall - $4000
- Remove chimney - $1000
- Fix electrical - $2000
- Repair gas lines - $1000
- Repair plumbing - $2000
- Furnace - $1000
- Building Security - $500
- Misc. Expenses - $2000
Total - $13,500
And that is just to get the building up and running. As with any building project there are bound to be more costs that arise. We are confident that by making our goal we can get the building running this winter. Your help can get our project off the ground and help rid Detroit of one more abandoned structure!
Thank you again!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risks are finding materials consistently. Since we don't buy any materials we are always searching the city for them. But luckily we have established a lot of relationships in our community, so we are always being tipped off on where to find materials.
Another risk is in delivering on time. Since everything is handmade and from reclaimed materials. The processing time can be a little bit inconsistent. But over the last year we have made it a point to really perfect our production processes. We feel very confident that we can meet all goals on time. (maybe even ahead of time!)
We have always made every deadline we have set for ourselves. And we don't plan on changing that. When problems do arise, we put our heads together and figure out a solution. It might lead to a couple of late nights, but we always get the job done.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
