This is a flute and piano album of well-known traditional and newer hymns with contemporary original adaptations and improvisation.
For several years now, pianist Christopher-Joel Carter and I have been traveling across the country performing together as a duo. Whether we are performing at Carnegie Hall or in the church house, we are often asked if we have recordings available--now we hope to.
We are often rehearsing the big classical flute literature, and sometimes we need a break. Many of our rehearsals have been in churches, so we will take a break, open the hymnal and adapt, improv, rearrange, you name it... to many of the traditional hymns. This became so much fun for us, and when we actually began to perform our arrangements in public, this is what people wanted to hear more than anything else! So, we came up with the idea to market to our audience, and we began this adventure.
Our album ranges from older, traditional hymns to current praise selections one may hear on the radio. All arrangements and adaptations of each selection are original ideas by both of us.
No matter the age of these timeless tunes, it is our hope that this album will be enjoyed on the way to work, getting dressed in the morning, or while enjoying that first delicious cup of coffee. This is an album of familiar melodies set into medleys, solo arrangements, and even some are smashed together where two songs are being played at the same time. Trust me, this is not like any other 'gospel album' that anyone has ever heard.
Word of caution, these melodies will be stuck in your head all day!
Thank you for taking time to check out this project, and thank you for your support and donations.
These demo recordings were performed on a Murumatsu platinum clad flute and a Steinway & Sons grand piano
