We are raising funds to commission a new work for percussion ensemble from Ivan Trevino. We asked Ivan to write a 6-7 minute mallet trio for our ensemble. We have performed Ivan's works in the past, and really believe in his compositional style, his philosophy on teaching, and in his passion for percussion. Ivan's complete bio and examples of his other works can be found on his website at ivandrums.com
This piece is also going to serve as the kickoff piece for the Wisconsin New Works for Percussion Project. There are so many great percussion studios in Wisconsin doing so many great things. We are hoping that this project will eventually get a percussion ensemble piece composed by a notable composer for each participating school.
This kickstarter is not here to act as a pool of money for future WNWP pieces. We just want to ensure that this piece by Ivan gets composed so that this project can be seen, and will be invested in by other schools in the future.
With the commission of this piece comes "first recording rights" for our ensemble. With any remaining funds from this Kickstarter, we plan on making a professional recording of this piece. With enough funds, we will eventually record an entire album of small percussion ensemble works.
With any rewards on the side that receive a PDF of the new work from Ivan, you will be receiving this piece a year before it is released to the public. This is due to a year performing right for our ensemble. (but you get the piece super early!)
The premier for this piece is planned to happen at the Wisconsin Day of Percussion. This year the Wisconsin DoP will happen January 17-18, 2014 in Whitewater, WI. The exact details and schedule for the DoP have yet to be set. More information about the DoP can be found here. Be on the look out for email update as the premier approaches.
A little bit about ourselves
The premiering ensemble will consist of University of Wisconsin Milwaukee students and alumni: Colin O'Day, Jordan Kamps.
We have been playing chamber music together for the last three years. In that time we have studied many pieces for chamber percussion ensemble. This project, in addition to creating new works for small percussion ensemble, also serves as an opportunity for us to premiere a piece as a group dedicated to the performance of chamber works for percussion.
Risks and challenges
The deadline for this project is November 1st. The premier for this piece will happen at the Wisconsin Day of Percussion, January 17-18, 2014. Once this piece is written we will only have a few short months to prepare it and get it ready for it's premier. All of us in the performing ensemble are either full time students, or employed full time. We are so passionate about this project and it's future that our lives might be overwhelming during rehearsals for the piece. We are confident that after the members of the Wisconsin Chapter of PAS and other members of different studios around the state see the great work of Ivan's, they will all be just as passionate as we are to see this project through.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
