About

Our Beginnings

One-Quest.com started out when a group of friends decided they wanted to make their voices heard. After years of friendship, and several false starts, One-Quest was finally born in January 2012. From day one, we knew it was the beginning of something special. We all have hopes and dreams for One-Quest and podcasting is the next big step in the right direction. We're a bunch of opinionated people, so there will be no shortage of things for us to talk about.

This isn't just about us sitting around and recording our conversations, we can do that anyway. We want to help expand media by talking to people in the video game, comic, and movie industries that you may not often hear from. We want to host live events and get the nerd crowds involved. We want to help voice a different set of opinions you don't often get to hear on big corporate sites like IGN and Kotaku.

We started off with a blog, covering news, reviews, or just about anything that we found interesting. We've established a pretty good reader base, made some great friends, and had some great times. Now we're looking to bring our content to the world in different way.

That's where Kickstarter comes into play. We're ready to expand, and the next logical step is Podcasting! Podcasting has always been a goal for us, and now that we're in a position to really get it going, we could use some help

You're probably wondering why we need to raise money for equipment. While laptops usually have webcams and microphones built in, and USB headsets are pretty cheap, they don’t provide us with the level of quality we’re looking for. If One-Quest is going to make podcasts, we're going to do it right! We’re big fans of the “Go big or go home” mentality after all. Luckily, we're already on the right track. We've got ourselves a small mixer and some microphones, and a bunch of fools who like to talk too much. However, we're not finished yet. There's still a lot of cost that goes into putting out a decent podcast. Primarily we're going to need to get a solid host, along with a few extra pieces of equipment.

Since day one, One-Quest has been a labor of love. We don't make any real money off the site, and don't plan to with the podcast. That's why we need all the help we can get! Any donations will help, and on our end we're promising to put out the best show possible!

The Show

This is the bit that really matters. Sure, it's nice to know who we are and why we want to do this. Let's be honest, the only reason you’d consider donating is if you have an interest in the final product right? If you're at all familiar with the website, you know that we'll talk about anything we consider nerdy and interesting. Comics, games, movies, food, the list could really just keep going. That's the basic idea of the show. We're going to sit around and discuss, dissect, and probably argue about things we find cool or interesting. Of course, like any good podcast, we'll end up getting utterly distracted and off topic regularly.

That may all sound a bit cramped and unfocused, so let me break it down more for you. We're going to be producing more than one show, One-Quest is the banner, but underneath of that we'll break things down into their own little groups. Think of Nerdist or Smodco, a handful of different shows, with mostly the same people.

Here's some ideas we have rolling around right now, names are bound to change, but the idea is there.

One-Quest Talky Time - Basically this is our flagship, round table discussion show. Whether it's a big topic like the new casting for some awesome future movie, or just us bouncing around the room talking about what's exciting to us that day. Also guest, as many guests as we can get!

That's Not What Happened - Do you ever watch these comic book movies that are just all the rave today and think "Well that's different than I remember from the book". Well this is the show for you! After spending some time watching, reading, and discussing we sit down and dissect a comic to film adaption. This is one of the only shows we've already started recording, having covered things like Batman Year One, Watchmen, and Planet Hulk, with mixed success. And it should be one of the first shows we start releasing!

MF'ing Podcast - This is the closest thing we have to a gimmicky show in the works. The hosts are going to sit around and play games - probably something like Diablo III especially now that Reaper of Souls is so good - and just chat about pretty much anything that comes to mind while battling the hordes of Hell.

We're certainly not limiting ourselves to just those shows, that's just the beginning. As time goes on we want to expand and do live events at conventions and maybe just live shows in general!

The best part about having a big group of friends is having a big group of friends with varying opinions, and that's what we've got here. You can expect One-Quest Podcasts to be filled with passionate debates and tangents about what we all love.

So that, my friends, is our plan. We'd love it if you'd help us out and be part of the experience!

As you continue on down the page you'll see what the money is going towards, and some stretch goals we've got, this way you know we're all on the up and up.

What We Need

Hosting - This is the big one! We're not looking for this to be a one and done endeavor. We want this podcast to go the long haul. As such we want to commit to professional and long term hosting. Something like Libsyn will give us everything we could need, but it's not cheap. We're hoping to get funded so we can get a couple years of hosting paid for up front.

Microphones - We're actually lucky to be in pretty good shape here, one of the things we were able to buy upfront were some microphones. We could always use more, or just better quality mics!

Mic Stands - You'd be surprised how much a good mic stand can run, probably because they're so important to having a consistent, high quality sound. Someone holding a microphone, moving it around, talking into from different angles can really screw up a recording. A mic stand can drastically decrease all of that.

Software - This one is actually probably the cheapest of the group. There is plenty of great, free recording software, like Audacity. But, when you want to record a Skype call and have it still sound nice you have to spend a little bit of money. We have a handful of possible solutions picked out. Right now Pamela looks to be the winner.

Cables and Misc - You may not realize it, but aside from the big stuff you still need a ton of cables and things like pop filters and headphones. The miscellaneous items are pretty cheap as a one off purchase, but when you bundle them together, along with everything else we still need, it adds up pretty quickly.

The End Game

The driving force behind this Kickstarter is to get us setup and prepared to record the shows for about 24 months. The One-Quest Podcasts are going to come out three times a month, so that's what we're going to call our Season One. 72 total episodes will be produced and available for your listening pleasure. From there if things are going strong and people are into it we'd love to come back to Kickstarter and give Season Two a go.

Stretch Goals

It seems every good Kickstarter has some stretch goals, so I figured why not us too?

I want to work ours a little differently though. I'm going to list the goal levels and what we'd use it for, then if we look like we're making it I want some input on what sort of rewards everyone would like! So let's get started.

At $1,500.00

We'll be looking to get a nicer mixer, along with things like an Expander/Gate/Compressor/Peak Limiter, and some more local storage for all these episodes!

At $2,000.00

We'll be buying some much better microphones, I know it seems like a lot for a little, but these will be really nice!

At $3,000.00

We'll add another few years-worth of hosting! I know this may seem crazy to do, but the more time we can get up front the longer we'll be doing this without missing a beat.

At $4,500.00

At this point it's time to look at what we're recording on. Sure using a laptop, or an existing desktop is fine. But now that we've got all this wonderful gear, why not step it up with a custom rig just for this wonderful show of ours?

Risks and challenges

Every project had risks, some bigger than others, but the common factor is without risk you can't gain anything.

One-Quest has been an amazing opportunity for us, and something we don't do for money but for our own enjoyment. Everything on One-Quest so far has come from us and been funded by us.

Now that we're looking to expand into podcasting we run into the sizable problem of funds. Before even getting started we've invested a lot of time and money on equipment and setups. We've come to the point of no return, we've invested in something we believe in and need your help to make it real.

The biggest hurdle here is making you, our potential backers see the value in putting not only your faith in our show, but your hard earned dollars as well. It's easy to get someone to listen to something for free, quite different to ask them to pay for it without truly knowing the finished product.

That's all just getting us through the Kickstarter, once that's over the real work begins! As mentioned early, the shows are going to release three times a month. That means outside of work (because we all need full time jobs) we need to come together, plan a show, prepare for it, record it, edit it, and finally put it up for the world to decide its value.

When you look at it that way, I guess it doesn't sound so bad, but if you'll indulge me for a moment I'll break it all down better.

Planning a show could be as simple as us just going "Hey let’s talk about Captain America!" but odds are it's never going to be that easy. People are going to have different opinions and views on topics, and to avoid 3 hours of audio of us disagreeing and rambling we'll certainly need to put a little planning into effect. Deciding what we'll talk about and who's got the most to say for and against it. Seeing who's even interested in the topic, maybe no one really is and we need to scrap it before we waste time recording something no one is really interested in.

From planning we've got to prepare, which may sound like the same thing, but for our That's Not What Happened episodes, we've got to not only decide what material we want to cover, but then read and watch it. For a movie like Watchmen that's a commitment, nearly 3 hours worth of movie plus a 12 issue comic series is not generally a normal weekend afternoon. That's only one example of preparing. Even for a normal recording, where we're talking about what's happening in gaming for instance, we're going to want to be up to date and have some notes jotted down so we don't sound like we're clueless.

The next two probably go together best. Once we're settled into a topic and know how we're going to approach it, it's time to record. Generally we're looking at between 1 and 1.5 hours of published audio. That means our average show recording is going to range from 1 hour to maybe 3 or 4. It all depends on off topic we get. How much stuff we talk about doesn't necessarily make for a good show. Everyone knows what it's like when you're talking with friends, sometimes you get off topic and just don't realize how bad you're off until it's far, far too late.

And that my friends is where editing comes in. We'll have to take all that messy audio and make it something wonderful! Something you'll want to listen to, something you'll be waiting for, something you'll always want a little more of. For anyone who has never really done any audio or even video editing, it's not a quick process. To cut say 2 hours of audio down to an 1 hour and 15 minutes you're looking at anywhere from 3 to 6 hours of editing. You're going to end up listening and re-listening to the same bits over and over making sure they sound right, and make sense, and have a good quality about them.

Once all that is done, it's really time for the hardest part, putting yourself out there. The Internet has certainly made it easier to do that! Who cares what a bunch of strangers think of you right? Wrong. If you're just posting comments on a forum it may not matter. When you're trying to produce a successful show, it matters more than anything else. It can be a truly stressful experience, especially in those early days when you don't really have a following and every download or comment has you simultaneous thrilled and terrified. All you can hope is that even one person out there likes it enough to recommend it to a friend, and maybe that friend does the same. And before you know what's happened people are looking forward to hearing you talk for a couple hours a month.
