Simplistic, 3D Stereoscopic Rig for shooting professional video using smart phone technology. Showcasing iPhone 4/4s
Mission: To bring 3D Filming into the lives of hobbyists, professionals, and everyday consumers through means of smartphone technology.
Goal: Strip away the daunting details, expensive setups, and overly complicated issues with regards to 3D Filming. Start shooting, and start making 3D magic!
A primary percentage of the funds used will help initiative the manufacturing process of the S3Rig. Moldamatic, a manufacturing company based 15 minutes outside of Philadelphia, has been involved with the prototyping and industrial development of the S3Rig. Once the funding goal has been reached, the money will be used to create the molds used in the manufacturing process and Moldamatic can begin production! To view their website for more information please go to : http://www.moldamatic.com/
Another portion of the funds will be used to further develop the S3 App and adjoining software. The goal of the S3 App is to allow beginner 3D Filmers the ability to shoot their footage and immediately upload it to YouTube's dedicated site for 3D films. Essentially, one click of a button and your footage will be merged (muxed) together and then uploaded for instant viewing. This is the ultimate goal of the S3 Revolution!

The S3Rig has gone through many phases of prototyping, and has been thoroughly designed and tested by product designers, industrial engineers, and experienced manufacturers. The S3Rig has been patented, and is now ready for manufacturing. We will be working with a local Pennsylvania manufacturer, Moldamatic, to assist in its production. This manufacturer will see production, assembly, and packaging through to final completion. To view their website for more information please go to : http://www.moldamatic.com/
The funding goal has been set based on the mold and tooling costs needed to get initial production underway. Once this goal has been achieved, the S3Rig is in a position to expand the movement of 3D filmmaking. If the funding goals are not met, the S3Rig will delay manufacturing until those costs are met, and will seek opportunities from investors.
The S3 app that which is currently under development allows for one iPhone to control the start and stop of the second iPhone through Bluetooth. At the moment, there is approximately a 7 frame offset delay, but it's fairly consistent which makes it pretty easy to re-align. It's not a perfect system, but it keeps the guessing to a minimum. We are continuing development on the s3App and will showcase more features soon!
The images still need to be combined in post. Shooting with the rig creates a left eye movie and a right eye movie. While it might seem easier to somehow automatically combine them as a single frame, it wouldn't result in consistently good 3D.
Having separate left and right movies retains the ability to adjust the convergence or zero point lets you set the zero point (plane of the screen), as well as fix rotational or vertical disparity. Most professional rigs still record independent left and right eyes, so that the alignments and even color correction can be adjusted in post. Maybe someday, the tech will be there to handle combining in phone, but for the moment it's something you'd have to do on a computer. There are several free or cheap software tools that we can recommend for working with 3D video.
The interaxial is currently not adjustable. It's just under 6" at the moment. At that interaxial, it's best suited for wider shots (12-15 feet or more from closest subject), like concerts and events, exteriors, etc. For closer arrangements, the iphones could be strapped together then seated in a vertical slot. The entire rig could be rotated 90 degrees and still mounted on a tripod using the standard camera threading. While that's not ideal, you could still have use of a tripod and by using the app, you'd be able to start and stop the 2 phones in sync without having to have access to the screen on the front phone. The rig was designed for side by side shooting, and the initial design didn't account for being able to place one iPhone in front of the other. The distance between the 2 iPhones was then determined by having only a small distance between the phones, but created almost a 6" interaxial. We are looking at ways to provide a closer range, but until the development of the App, we wouldn't have had a way to control the touch screen on the front camera once the back camera was in place. Pro-3D rigs often use 90 degree setups with 50/50 glass. While they provide alot more control and flexibility, they're more complicated and would be more expensive than our solution.
At the moment, manually. The iPhone's seat relatively flat inside the rig and as long as you push them firmly into place, we've had minimal rotational issues. I recommend finding a flat horizontal edge to aim at, to confirm alignment along the bottom edge on the screen. Since they have no physical zoom, 2 identical iPhones side by side should have very little to no vertical offset, so rotation was the only original fear.
After having shot a 4 and 4s as a pair though, we've realized that the app would benefit from the ability to adjust a small amount for zoom. We hadn't realized that the 4 and 4s had different enough chips / lenses as to have one eye zoomed in by a small percentage. We're looking into adding some other features to the app that would help: like an onscreen grid for alignment.
Yes, in fact that was how we shot the demo video posted on Youtube. The downside of this is that using different models causes some alignment issues. These issues can be fixed in your video editing software, but having the same model results in less work, because you won't have to adjust the framing to match them. (iPhone 4s has a slightly less zoomed image than the iPhone 4, so you see a wider field of view by about 2%). You'd hardly notice the difference, but the images have to match so closely for 3D that you see it.
It is not supported in the prototype, but we plan to make a minor adjustment to the S3Rig once we've secured financing to make this possible. The prototype rig was developed before the iPhone 5 was released, so the form factor was tailored to the iPhone 4 and 4s.
"Can the video be exported to other than youtube? Specifically in *.mov format or *.avi or some similar format?
Absolutely. While the rig provides a stable shooting platform and synchronized recording, the iPhones still record separate files, in the same format as the default video camera. So, video shot using 2 cameras still needs to be combined in software and can be exported in any format that your software supports. Some free options are CineForm Studio, or on PC, Stereo Movie Maker or Sony Vegas.http://gopro.com/3d-cineform-studio-software-download/
Neither our S3Rig or App, output muxed video, so again this is a function of your particular software. One interesting thing is that video uploaded to Youtube as Side by Side, is automatically converted to multiple output formats for viewing. So, if you upload a Side by Side to Youtube, you can view just about any way you'd like.
See above. Your display options will depend on your computers software.
Yes. Once funding is reached, versions of s3Rig will be made to support Andriod smartphones.
