Wanna Be a Rock – Star, Can’t Play a Gui – Tar
Three years ago I published a book of poems titled, “Car Sick from Circus Peanuts”. I decided my next collection of poems would be more in the style of song lyrics. I've completed 100 new lyrics/poems.
I was originally planning to go the normal route of submitting work for competitions, poetry mags, etc., but I decided to try to raise the money and publish 1000 copies and pay my graphic designer and illustrator. Should I then try to sell them? Unknown self published poets are a huge driving market force in the literary world. Just Kidding. I plan on giving the books away at retail locations where musicians or other creative people can get them. If we are lucky enough to raise more than our funding request, we'll just print more copies. The idea is to offer up the lyrics for anyone to add music to them. There is something fun, creative, inspiring and freeing about the collaborative experience and I'm curious to see what can happen to these words once they get in someone else's hands.
As I mentioned above, the book will contain 100 poems/lyrics (130 pages). My personal music tastes are varied. Most of the lyrics could be used in multiple genres. Some tend to have a flavor of a genre, by words used or style it’s written in. Some of the styles that inspired and informed me are rock, country, hip hop, bluegrass and alternative forms of these standard genres. I have posted 25 of the lyrics/poems as samples to give a vibe of what the work is like.
I’ve tried to offer solid rewards. Here are pictures of the T-Shirt design. Please note that the rewards at the $250 and $500 mark are exceptional values (for those close enough to take advantage). The $500 reward is a one week stay (Sat-Sat) at a beautiful cabin on a river in northern Wisconsin that is normally valued at around $900. The cabin is a 3 bedroom that sleeps 6 comfortably. It would be the perfect place to get away from it all and write, read, play music or just hang out and watch the wildlife and kayak on the river. The $250 reward is a weekend at the cabin. Here are pictures of the cabin and here is a calendar to plan your stay . The weekend stay in the summer is only available when week-long stays are not booked, so most weekend stays will have to be be booked after Labor Day Weekend. All stays will be booked tentatively on a first come basis and if budget is met bookings will be locked in.
