About

Hey there. Thanks for checking out my project. I have designed a height adjustable desk that doesn't cost the earth, that isn't designed by an ex-apple hot-shot, and that is simple to use and maintain. I believe that everyone should have access to the benefits of the height adjustable desk. I don’t believe in shipping materials and labour out to certain countries and exploiting their disadvantages. I believe in re-shoring manufacturing to the UK and creating much needed skilled jobs.

I want you to be able to shake up your working space, with a desk that could also help your physical and mental well being.  There has been a lot of research done on how sitting is the smoking of our generation, yet adjustable desks remain un-affordable. Maybe you just want to try out an adjustable desk without shelling out a bucket load for a plain simple desk? Or you want a product that is going to be limited to only a handful of people and personalised to your taste?

I have decided to go against using electronics and gears to make the desk adjustable, I believe that this is an unnecessary cost and creates a bigger margin for error. We need to be selective about what products we use electronics in, check out this guy:http://www.fallingwhistles.com/, who describes how people are dying for the resources used by the manufacturing of our electronic products.

The price of this product is exclusive for Kickstarter, when it becomes available for retail the price will increase.

How it works

The desk is unique in being raised and lowered by a pulley system.

It’s fairly simple really, when you’re feeling a bit sluggish; just pull the desk up to a standing position to give yourself a bit of motivation.

A pulley system assisted by smooth runners will help you easily adjust your desk to a variety of heights that would be suitable for anyone. The desk can support my own weight, 13 stone, so I’m pretty sure it can hold up everything you need it to. The desk should be adjusted every two hours or so to gain the full benefits.

There’s no need to remove any of your items from the table when adjusting it, you’ll get a smooth transition. So don’t worry about spilling coffee, beer, or your favourite herbal brew.

Assembly is straight forward and there is no need for special tools.

Are you still in love with your old desk? Find it hard to change? Well, if you purchase one of our frames you can turn your old table-top into an adjustable desk, especially if you’re feeling fairly handy in the DIY department. If you would like to do this, let me know once you have purchased your product and I will send a video on how this can be achieved.

For my American friends and anyone else who I am unable to ship this product to, there is a DIY option that allows you to build your own version. I will send an instructional video, guide and cutting list on how to make your own desk.  If you want extra help I can also send the CAD file (at a small cost) which will give you a full 3D representation of the model. Certain components can be cut straight from the CAD files if you have access to a CNC machine.

The science

It’s not enough to just stand up for a whole day, or sit down for the whole day. We need to keep our bodies moving. That doesn’t mean the one or two trips to the coffee machine. It means changing your working position.

The story

So how has the desk been developed? The idea came about in April, after looking at some of the stories and research that has been published, I decided to invest in an adjustable desk.  I soon realised that all of the desks were clearly out of my price range. No one was targeting the desk at the young professional; the adjustable desk is meant to prevent physical problems. Yet if the younger market can’t afford it then how is this technology going to benefit them.

So I looked at ways on how I could keep the same functionality, but lose some of the technology that goes with the current desk. So I went back to basics and came up with the idea of using the pillar as a way to slide the desk up and down (similar to what you can find on a pillar drill.)

My main worry when constructing the first prototype was the desk wouldn't be able to hold up sufficient weight. But I was proven wrong fairly quickly when I started adding weight to the desk and it held up fine ( I haven’t tested the weight at its breaking point as I still wanted to use the first prototype myself.)

I could now start looking at the stability of the desk and the problem I had of it tilting backwards.  To solve this I set the pillar at an angle.  I then looked at making the base a lot bigger so that it would stop rocking when you lean on the desk.

Once this had been solved, I started looking at improving the aesthetics of product and this is when I introduced the copper piping as the supports for the pillar.  I then tested, to check if the copper piping would be able to hold the weight put on the desk.

So this is where I have got to and where you guys come in.

Where will funding go?

As well as primarily giving opportunities for development and manufacturing of the desk, the funds will contribute towards the sourcing of materials, manufacturing services used, and labour costs.

The Plan

Once funding has ended in mid January, research, development, testing and manufacturing will commence. The finished desks will be shipped within six weeks. Each desk will be handmade and could be customised with your name or logo.

Customisation of the desk is available. This may take longer to manufacture depending on the complexity of modification.

Technical spec

Materials:

·Frame work will be made from plywood, the reason being it's strong, light, and the layers have a beautiful aesthetic quality.

·The ribs for the stand will be made from copper piping. Although the perception may be that they are not strong enough for a desk, if they are angled correctly they will provide more than enough support. They also provide a unique aesthetic quality incomparable to any other desks.

·The latch is made from a steel alloy which will easily hold up the desk when it is fixed in a certain position.

Some of the measurements may be subject to change.

Customisable options

Paint the desk any colour you want.

A company logo/name can be CNC machined/laser cut into the desk.

A choice of colour for the rope is available.

Delivery

The product can be shipped anywhere in mainland UK.  Collection is also available from Loughborough or York.

Risks and challenges

Some of measurements maybe changed in terms of the base, this will down to giving you the most stable desk. The desk is stable at the moment, but I believe that I can make it even better by making a few alterations. This shouldn’t affect the amount of space that the desk will take up.

Testing of the product still needs to go ahead. The test will involve the durability of the product and its performance. I have a accounted for time in which if the product may fail, that solutions will made and manufacture will resume. However if there is any unforeseen circumstances I will notify you immediately and explain the situation.
