What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

I've had the kernel of this idea for a while, but after seeing my local transit agency Tweet out alerts with colors that didn't match the map (and which commit several other design crimes which will not be spoken of) I spent some time with PDF maps, a color picker and a line file and came up with this image.

People seem to like it. Several want posters. Well …

The point of this Kickstarter is not to make this project happen. It's going to happen. The point is to get cheaper, higher-quality posters if there's enough interest. We could print these digitally and send them out, and that would work fine (and if it doesn't succeed, I'll probably give potential backers that option), but if we get enough interest to get a stack of offset maps printed we get a higher-quality image for less money, so everyone's a winner.

But I need your help. I'll be posting prototypes as I go through the process. They may need editing. Tweet me @ofsevit and I'll (probably) make changes. I don't pretend to know everything. Just, well, almost everything.

Risks and challenges

The challenge here is time and expertise. I'm a grad student, so I have time (insert funny joke here). And some expertise (I'm a grad student in transportation and urban planning, and kind of a transit nerd … just a little). Luckily, I have friends willing to lend design expertise, correct me on transit issues, and the Internet has been more than happy to help as well (the Maryland MTA runs MARC but the Baltimore Metro and Light Rail aren't MARC, for instance). So the final product will be well-vetted and proof-read many times.

    World Metro Poster

Like the US/Canada transit system poster, but want one that is of World Metro systems? It's in development. It too can be yours. Trust us, you'll like it. It's like the US, but on steroids. (I think we'll only feature systems with bonafide metros and four colors, and it's going to be a beast. In a good way.)
