Born of a classic 'a-ha' moment, this project aims to remedy a curious gap: with an ever-growing catalog of Aboriginal titles now filling bookstore shelves, why have so few been translated into audiobooks?
Whatever the reason, it means fans of this hugely popular medium have been deprived of some of the world's richest stories. With your backing, we can help turn that around.
'We' are long-time Indigenous media makers Rick Harp and Waubgeshig Rice, just itching to join forces for your literary listening enjoyment. In a nutshell, we propose the creation of an audiobook that'd give Rick's voice to Waubgeshig's words, those of his short-story collection, Midnight Sweatlodge. Now in its second printing, the award-winning book chronicles the challenges that go with growing up Anishinaabe in contemporary Canada: isolation, depression, substance abuse and crises of identity.
So whether you hope to experience this book in a whole new way, or take a different path to enjoying it for the very first time, we hope you'll help rouse the sounds of Midnight Sweatlodge: The Audiobook as part of our crowdfunding circle.
Choose from among these great options using the reward selector!
For folks who like the idea of contributing to independent Indigenous media, but may not want an audiobook right now. That's cool: you'd still have our gratitude, which, if you like, can take the form of a mention on Facebook / Twitter / Google+ from Waubgeshig and Rick.
And if that means it'll take 11,000 tweets to hit our target, our digits are up to the task! :)

We've achieved our goal: now what?
UPDATE: Dec 19, 2014 // 3+ DAYS TO GO
Despite the fact that we've already reached our goal as of late yesterday afternoon, pledges continue to come in to our Kickstarter. This has simply amazed Waubgeshig and I.
Now, some of that is no doubt understandably motivated by the once-in-a-lifetime offer by artist Aaron Paquette (that 11x17 print of a gorgeous work that he says has-never-been-nor-ever-will-be-again for sale, making it an exclusive to this campaign's backers), but not all of it.
Some may wonder what will come of that potential surplus. (I say 'potential' because costs can often creep in where you least expect, especially for reward fulfillment.) What follows is a provisional answer.
Depending on how much 'extra' comes in, we may go in one of a couple of directions. One might be to use the funds to seed another audiobook: we've always said we hoped this would be but the first of many such products, so why not?
Another direction we could go would be to undertake a richer version of this audiobook, approaching the project as an opportunity for creating a deeper soundscape, complete with sound effects and a musical soundtrack throughout the audiobook. This approach would require more time and resources, things more pledges would obviously enable. Still, we would need to do more homework before definitively determining the costs of such added production layers.
Often, Kickstarter campaigns which hit their goal before the deadline opt to pursue what are called "stretch goals," added extras that enhance or supplement the original goal. But with us being so focused for so long on just reaching the target, such goals would've seemed a tad premature, frankly.
Truthfully, we are still stoked and even a little stunned to have even reached the original $11,000 goal. To ask for anything more, even at this point, would feel almost too much. That said, should this delightful trend of additional pledges continue to make those aforementioned options increasingly possible, we pledge to you here and now that we will be fully accountable for whatever ultimately happens with any potential surplus.
Risks and challenges
With most of my broadcast experience spent in front of a microphone or camera lens, I know it takes a dedicated professional to make sure the job's done right. That's why, rather than attempt to create the audiobook myself, I'd go with a professional recording studio to produce the best, richest sound possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
