About

There are thousands of people that can benefit from using our ergonomic designed backscratcher. As you get older, your flexibility lessens and many can't reach over their shoulder with a straight backscratcher. This can also be due to shoulder injuries or being disabled.

The EZ Backscratcher solves this problem. By holding it by the handle in front of your chest, you simply rotate your wrist and you are able to scratch or scrub your back. This design will be adapted to use as a scrubber in the near future.

The idea for this unique backscratcher came from watching elderly people trying to reach over their shoulder with the typical straight backscratcher. It soon became apparent that many other people with limited arm mobility from injury or disability also had this problem. So, the idea for a better mousetrap was born. We wanted to design a backscratcher that worked without having to reach over your shoulder.

The project became a collaborative effort between David Madrigal, Bret Madrigal and Cindy Brennan.  David Madrigal is a graduate engineer (retired) who worked with NASA and companies as consultant in analog computer simulation. Bret is a General Contractor in the building industry where injuries are far too common. Cindy is a surgical nurse at our local hospital and sees first hand the difficulties her patients have in performing simple tasks like lifting their arms.

It took over three months of various CAD designs and then the making of the prototypes for testing. The key, as it turned out, was to deflect the handle upward a few degrees. This allows you to hold the backscratcher in front of your chest and simply rotate your wrist to move the claw-head up and down across your back without having to raise your arm. We also widened the claw-head to the width of a human hand.

We tested it among able and disabled people and the response was positive and enthusiastic. The design is monolithic and can be produced using a single mold. The process will be injection molding using re-cycled plastic.

We have vetted several mold manufacturers and the final production contract will be awarded based on their availability and pricing. Once we reach our pledge goal, it will take 2-3 months to make the mold. The production prototype will then be tested for quality and durability and once approved, production will follow. We also plan to adapt this design for use in showers as a back scrubber.

The production mold is expensive and must be replaced after several thousand uses.

For the assembly and packaging, we plan to contract with as many organizations as possible that employ disable personnel.

We are very pleased that So CA. award winning artist Kathe Madrigal (kathemadrigal.com) has contributed an original painting that we can reproduce as a print as a reward for many of our contributors.

We don't have social media structured yet but we will keep all of our contributors informed as we go forward. The EZ Backscratcher has been a collaborative effort under our company name Monopour Solution.
