Hi! I'm Imogen Rae; singer, songwriter and student, living in the historic city of Lancaster, UK. I've been writing, singing and performing my songs for over 6 years, accompanying myself on the piano. I like to think of myself as a wordsmith. I craft lyrics that are interesting and perceptive, drawing from my own experiences and the world around me. In terms of my music, I take inspiration from many genres but particularly folk and jazz to create my lyrics, melodies and accompaniments. Music is about getting people to listen. Lend me your ears!
As a result of my first album 'BREATHLESS' and performances at OpenMicUK at the NEC in Birmingham, I have been scouted by ASTAR Studios (recently accredited as one of the top 4 recording studios in Europe!) and have been asked to record my second album ‘Queen of Hearts’ in Manchester with Andy Ross. Andy was awarded the title ‘Producer of the Year 2013’ and was shortlisted for a Mercury Award with his ‘Kit Downes Trio’ album, nominated alongside the likes of albums by legendary artists Paul Weller and Jamie Cullen – exciting times!
The project will take my songwriting and recording to the next level and with the help of publicist Peter Ross, will be launched nationally in August 2015. As I maintain my independent artist status and am therefore without the financial help of a record label, I am having to self fund the recording costs. THIS IS WHERE YOU GUYS COME IN!
Even though ASTAR have reduced many fees as part of their programme to support young upcoming musical talent (Andy is effectively producing for free!) I still have to fund the physical hire of the studio for the recording time, the musicians fees and the production costs of the album itself. A detailed breakdown of these costs is illustrated below so you can see exactly where all the money is going!
ASTAR believe in me and are providing an amazing opportunity to get my music out there to reach a national platform. However, I can't do this alone - I need your backing! Anything you can pledge is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

So, COST - the breakdown:
Studio hire (20 days recording + 5 days preproduction) = £7320

Travel cost ( 120 miles/day x25 days) = £400
Album production (CD burning, full colour printing, vinyl style CDs) = £2000

TOTAL = £11,750
My music- How did it all begin?
I have always been musical. From an early age, I learnt to play the piano, clarinet, violin and drums and have always sung! I persevered particularly with the piano and singing, attaining a distinction in my grade 8 piano whilst I was still at school.
At the age of 13, I started songwriting, entering a school composition competition, which I won with my very first song ‘All These Little Things’. This is still a favorite of many people and is featured on my first album, 'Breathless'.
From there I progressed to gain 2nd place in the National Young Songwriter of the Year 2011 with my song ‘Build My Wings’. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to record this song in Mark Knopfler’s ‘British Grove Studios’ in London, ranked number 1 recording studio in Europe. I performed with Grant Windsor, Damian Simes from ‘Adam and the Ants’ and Simon Little from the ‘Divine Comedy’.
My song ‘In the Doldrums’ reached the finals of the 'National Folk Awards' which is part of the UK’s largest Songwriting Competition.
I was a finalist in the 2013/14 OpenMicUK, the UK’s largest youth singing competition and singing my own material, I won publicity prizes and a recording session at Redfern Studios in Sheffield.
I now have over 50 songs to my name and have dabbled in many styles. My musical adventure has so far taken me from packed school halls, quirky local venues to the NEC in Birmingham and most recently, performing comic songs at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge as part of the Footlights and Musical Theatre Societies. I even managed to write a musical, 'Merlot & Royal' along the way!
It has taken 6 years of songwriting to develop and find my niche style - I hope you will enjoy!
I truly believe that my music is good enough to make it - I just need people to hear and enjoy it. I hope I can inspire you to be part of my journey. Anything you can pledge towards the cost of recording and publicizing my new album 'Queen of Hearts' will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Imogen Rae x
Risks and challenges
The initial risk is applying for the whole amount and not achieving the full sum in pledges. This is where YOU GUYS come in! Anything you feel able to pledge will make a real difference and would be greatly appreciated, so thank you!
Assuming I reach my funding goal, the major challenges are completing the project in the allocated time and subsequent publicity for the album's release.
I already have some experience of the time scales involved as a result of the process of recording and releasing my album 'Breathless' last summer and feel the projected timescale is realistic.
In terms of publicity, I currently have several avenues through which my music can be accessed. These include:
My website www.imogenrae.co.uk
Facebook page www.facebook.com/imogenraerecords
Youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/fishfoodicecream and
Twitter pages www.twitter.com/imogenraemusic.
I realise that I will need to expand my social media platform and increase the media hype around the release of 'Queen of Hearts'. To maximize this exposure, I will do my best to continue to build on my fan base with a mixture of personal appearances at gigs and concerts and on music video channels. I will strive to secure as much air time as I can, distributing the album to both local and national radio stations.
I want my music to reach as many ears as possible.. after all, that's what it's all about!
