About this project
… funding the postproduction and printing of the campaign and adventure module Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden
… being able to lend the above mentioned product the same superb finish as the Symbaroum Core Rulebook and afford a large print run
… making even more gamers aware of the game and giving newcomers a chance to join in the adventure
It should also be noted that Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden has already been translated into English and is currently undergoing the first of three proofreading phases.
So what are the main reasons for you to consider backing this crowdfunding campaign? That question is probably easily answered for all who are already playing Symbaroum but if you are new to the game, here are some suggestions:
- You are looking for a fantasy roleplaying game with high production value and a serious undertone, focused on exploration, moral choices and character development.
- You have fond memories of the grand campaigns of the late 20th century and want to learn how a modern take on that concept can be designed.
- You are enticed by the idea of immersing and investing yourself in a fantastic setting which has inspired reactions like “awesome”, “breathtaking” and “mind-blowing” (see review links below).
- You are looking for or are intrigued by a TRPG system which has been described like “a perfect blend of a more narrative system like FATE or Dungeon World and a more gamey system like D&D or Pathfinder”.
Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden is the first episode in the Chronicle of the Throne of Thorns. The 176 page book will be followed by six other episodes, and it is through these campaign and adventure modules that we will keep building the world of Symbaroum. Aside from an in-depth introduction to a specific region in Ambria, Davokar or beyond, each book will introduce new optional rules and features – abilities, (monstrous) traits, mystical powers and rituals, creatures, artifacts, elixirs and much more.
Looking at the first episode in particular, it is divided into three sections:
The Hunter’s Harbor
The opening section is meant to be read by both players and Game Masters. It offers an introduction to the town of Thistle Hold, as it is known to people in general (its “surface”, if you will). If the characters have spent some time in town before the game begins, and if their players are allowed to read The Hunter’s Harbor, this will not only make them feel more at home in Thistle Hold – it will also make them more independent in problem-solving situations; less dependent on the Game Master leading them by the hand. In short, the section includes:
- Historical events that are often talked about in town, and which exemplify what it is like living in the shadow of Davokar.
- Five taverns with lists of the drinks and foods they serve
- Five very different inns, from the shabby Rosegarden to the exclusive Winged Ladle.
- Shops where the player characters can find anything from explorers’ equipment to weapons, elixirs and mystical treasures.
- Establishments for amusements and entertainment, including the Abomitorium and Spectacle with its renowned and unlikely troop of dwarven acrobats.
- Sources of knowledge and information, like the Archive at the Queen’s Legation, the tower of Ordo Magica and the barbarian witch Agdala.
- Places and persons of power, for instance the Sun Temple, the Town Seat and the dreaded Penitentiary with its weasel-like warden Pergalo, said to be the son of the legendary master torturer Katia.
- The permanent tent camp Blackmoor with its most prominent features, not least the Garbage Heap – home to all who have lost their faith, who never had any faith and a diverse crowd of sickly people waiting to be released from mortal life.
Game Master Section
The second section is for the Game Master’s eyes only and offers a deep descent beneath the surface. A significant part is devoted to truths and secrets which may be used to produce homebrew adventures or even lengthy campaigns, but the majority of the section introduces new and optional rules – most of which will come into use when playing Wrath of the Warden. In brief, the section includes:
- The truth about Thistle Hold’s history.
- An introduction to the power factions operating in town.
- A long list of secrets and plot hooks for the Game Master to develop into adventures or campaigns.
- Hints and suggestions on how to use the book’s setting for so called Goal Oriented Roleplaying, where the ambitions of the characters decide what happens – in this case based on the goals to a) establish an outpost, and b) stage an expedition.
- Two forest ruins waiting to be explored; the Game Master gets to determine the exact location of the ruins and has great freedom to decide what will happen if the player characters find their way there.
- A chapter with new abilities, (monstrous) traits, mystical powers and rituals, creatures, artifacts, elixirs and more.
Wrath of the Warden
The remainder of the book is dedicated to the adventure Wrath of the Warden. For the sake of any players reading this we will not go into details, but it is fair to say that it revolves around a series of events which will have a great impact on Thistle Hold and the realm of Ambria at large.
Are you a Game Master? If so you should take a closer look at the eBook Symbaroum – The Throne of Thorns, which introduces the main theme, agents and episodes of the Chronicle as a whole. To download it, click the banner above.
So, for those who have not heard about the game, what is Symbaroum? The game was first launched in Swedish, in July 2014. About one year later, in November 2015, the English edition of the Core Rulebook was introduced – first as an eBook, later available in print from Järnringen and Modiphius, and finally it reached retailers all around the world in April 2016. Licensing deals are already in place for translations into German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazilian) and French. The French studio A.K.A. Games is leading the way and recently raised over 122,000 Euro (approx. 135,000 USD) from the French speaking market alone.
Down below you will find a number of links taking you to documents or web pages with more information on Symbaroum. Should you wish to talk to people who are already playing the game, your best bet is probably to look up the group Symbaroum TRPG on Google+ or the group Symbaroum at Reddit. Members of the Järnringen team also stop by at those places from time to time.

NOTE: Should the campaign reach beyond stretch goal #12 during the final hours, you can be sure that the surplus will be put to good use. For a small and steadily growing enterprise there are lots of wants and needs to address - convention visits, remodeled homepage, marketing efforts and so on. Queen Korinthia and Team Järnringen thank you for pinching in.
Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden
The first campaign and adventure book in the Chronicle of the Throne of Thorns is thoroughly described at the top of this page.
NOTE: You will receive a digital beta version of the book from DriveThruRPG as soon as we have one available .
Symbaroum – Core Rulebook
We have put aside 250 copies of the relatively limited first printrun of the Symbaroum Core Rulebook for backers of this campaign. The 264 page book has been very warmly received across the world and includes everything you need to start exploring the dark and dangerous Davokar Forest.
NOTE: You will receive a digital version of the book from DriveThruRPG within a week after the campaign has ended (provided that you have pledged for one of the rewards including this product).
The collector’s volume called Nightbane will be of the same design as the Nightbane Edition of the Core Rulebook (see below). The book is bound in artificial leather with metallic foiling details. Also, it will be numbered in the pledge order, signed by key members of Team Järnringen and shipped separately from Stockholm, Sweden.
This A3 map will surely come in handy when playing Wrath of the Warden and will also have its uses later on, not least the side illustrating Blackmoor. The side depicting Thistle Hold looks much like the map in the Core Rulebook, except for one very important detail …
The Hunter’s Harbor
The Hunter’s Harbor is the first section of Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden. Its content is described at the top of the page, indicating why it would be great to have access to a standalone version of it.
World Map – Bonus Reward
This map of Symbaroum’s game world is offered as a free bonus to backers who have pledged for one of the reward levels including stretch goals #6-8. Those who have pledged for a level including printed books will receive a high quality A3 print of the item, while those who have pledged for digital rewards will get the map as a high res PDF.
Fever of the Hunt, PDF
In Fever of the Hunt the player characters journey to a dig site in Davokar called Salindra’s Hope. A motley crowd of treasure hunters are there, trying to tunnel their way into an ancient burial mound. But they are not alone; watchful eyes keep track of their movements from the surrounding woods, some of them out of concern, others burning with hatred …
The Bell Tolls for Kastor, PDF
The town of Kastor appears in the morning mist – the stone wall, sturdy and tall; the copper dome of the Sun Temple; the Tower of the Armored Fist with its legendary alarm bell. The view also holds unexpected elements: the smoke rising from the Sun Temple and the large number of guards, some of them obviously belonging to the notorious Blue Company. You arrive at a town in chaos, and the bell hangs mute in its tower, just as silent as the deceased victims of last night …
Adventure Pack 2
If stretch goal #9 is unlocked, we will combine Fever of the Hunt and The Bell Tolls for Kastor into a 48 page book called Adventure Pack 2 and print it in full color, on premium quality paper, with soft covers.
The Howling of Damned Gods, PDF
During the Great War, the Young Gods became old – banned and branded as aspects of the Dark and as enemies of Prios, the Sun God who rose to becoming the One and the Giver of Laws. But now that the war is over there are those who begin to question the supremacy of Prios. This adventure will be written for the Swedish and Anglo-American market if the fundraiser goes well, based on the abovementioned area of conflict. It will also include an appendix describing the Young Gods as well as the border town of Prios Pass.
Report 22:01:08, pdf only
Järnringen has, by mystical means, acquired a document in which Ralgai of house Melion offers his view on the situation in the lands surrounding Ambria and Davokar. This classified report was sent from The Royal Sekretorium to the Queen’s Council and includes a sketchy map, including Alberetor, Lyastra (the realm of the Dark Lords), the City States, Land Fall far to the east. Estimated delivery: Q1 2017.
Add-ons are items you can add to your Pledge. Why, you may ask yourself, are these items not included in the pledge levels featuring earlier stretch goals. The answer is simply that we want to keep the cost of the KEEPER, STEWARD and WARDEN levels as low as possible and then leave it up to you backers to decide if you add anything more. After the campaign has ended, you will be asked (by email or a pledge manager) to confirm what add-on(s) you actually have pledged for.
So, if you want to add an add-on to your pledge, please add the specified amount to your total pledge. And should your add-on(s) require shipping you will also have to add the amount specified in the table below, based on a) where you live and b) how many products you wish to add.
Please note that all add-ons have an estimated delivery date set to December 2016, and that the physical ones will be shipped together from UK.
Also, all who pledge for the physical books will get the PDF versions as a free bonus reward
Shipping example: If you live in the US and want to add the Player’s Handbook you have to add 70 SEK extra for shipping. Should you also want the GM Screen, you add 20 SEK more for a total of 90 SEK. Consequently, if you want all three add-ons you have to pay a total of 100 SEK in extra shipping.
Player’s Handbook Add-On
Expected delivery: December 2016
GM Screen Add-On
Symbaroum’s much awaited GM Screen will (tentatively) be composed of four panels (US letter, landscape alignment) and set on a sturdy cardboard core. The inside will feature important tables, rules and other GM assets; the outside will be a panorama motif by Martin Bergström.
Among the GM assets you will find the Quick Guide for Combat, Lists of Special Actions and Special Rules, along with tables on Stigmas, Challenge Modifications, Shadows and the unique Encounters in Davokar. Expected delivery: December 2016.
NOTE: If stretch goal #12 is unlocked, all who have pledged for the DIGITAL version of the GM Screen will receive a gift certificate to the value of $3.99, equal to the price of the Adventure Pack 1 PDF.
Art Book Add-On
The Symbaroum Art Book will be bound in hard covers and printed on high quality paper, doing the spectacular artwork justice. This 80 page product will be great to have on the coffee table or next to your favorite reading chair so you can pick it up and daydream your way to Ambria and Davokar whenever you like. Expected delivery: December 2016.
The Art Book will be built on two ingredients: images from the current Symbaroum catalogue and short texts/excerpts anchoring each motif in the lore of the game. The designed/layout is planned for the autumn of 2016 so the details are not yet set in stone. But you can be sure that we will make it into something special, since the artwork is one of the things we feel very strongly about.
When it comes to shipping the rewards associated with the different pledge levels we have reliable partners. All electronic products will be delivered through DriveThruRPG and the shipping of physical books will be carried out by the company handling deliveries for the Symbaroum products already co-published by Modiphius. Thus, we feel confident that shipping will prove to be one of the easiest parts of this campaign.
Regarding shipping costs, we have based the rate on a template provided by our shipping partners. The template has been composed with the experience from numerous fundraiser campaigns, and we fully trust that it is fair in its estimate.

Risks and challenges
Our previous fundraiser on IndieGoGo taught us much about running campaigns like this one. It also made us aware that things will happen along the way, some which we can work to resolve as quickly as possible, others that are more or less beyond our control. But seeing as we already have the delivery sorted out and that Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden is already translated, we have to assume that things will go according to plan. If we encounter any speed bumps along the road, you will be the first to know!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
