Here’s the Short & Sweet:
Snake River Comic Con coming to Eastern Idaho in September 2017!
It’s been 25 years since our region enjoyed a fan convention. We have the amazing fan-base—let’s debut our own gathering and end the drought. We need your help to make it even better.
This modest Kickstarter fund is earmarked for durable permanent assets necessary for this year’s event and many more in the future (details below).

Organizers Tanglwyst de Holloway, John Farmer, Helen Might, and Shawn Lowry have been working hard to make sure Snake River Comic Con has something for everyone. The Snake River Comic Con debut features over 300 hours of events in three days, more than 40 special guests, panelists, and podcasters from all over the country, and a clever plan that lets you immerse yourself in your favorite fandoms, games, or cos-play pursuits.
Book lovers rejoice: you’ll have a chance to hear from Cat Rambo, president of the Science Fiction Writer’s Association, and Christine Taylor-Butler of Scholastic Books (author of the Lost Tribes series), along will other fantastic regional and national authors. Let some of the best teach you how to make your own work shine!
Other special guests include the voice of anime and video game favorites like Grimjow from Bleach, Archer from Fate/Zero, and Robin from Fire Emblem: Awakening - David Vincent! Actor and Stuntman, the illustrious Don Shanks will be coming, best known for his work as Michael Meyers in Halloween V and Nakoma in The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams!
Hit one of evening dance parties: Friday night features Perpetual Notion, The Relyx, and Hot Pursuit for rock fans, or break out your best Victorian-inspired gear at the Victorian Ball, hosted by Asheel Terestini. Saturday night features a live-action murder mystery followed by the Glitterati Gals Burlesque Revue, and the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Beats rave!
Don’t forget to hit Hogwarts’ Room of Requirement and be sorted into your British or American House! Have a Bit of a Moment with your favorite artists, makers, writers, and more! Snake River Comic Con cares about the Whole Fan: we’re featuring a wonderful Adulting 101 room to help you tackle In Real Life topics like dealing with depression or anxiety, and learning to understand what you or a loved one may be working through.
Are you a Maker yourself? Learn costuming and prop fabrication from experts eager to encourage you, and register for the Exhibition class, where you can display your work to your appreciative costuming colleagues! Want to challenge yourself? Enter the Costuming competition, run under guidelines from the International Costumers Guild, with workmanship judging fairly sorted by the excellent Gemstate Costumers from Boise, ID. Prizes for cos-play performance and workmanship will be awarded in three levels, from Novice to Master.
We’re expecting more than 100 artists, merchants, and special guests in the Vendor Hall. The Green Screen photo booth makes it easy to capture the right commemorative photo-op with friends, family—and some of those special guests, too! Plan to spend some time in Gamer's Hall, trying out new games or launching into a fresh game with friends and strangers.
Bringing the whole family? Our Monster’s Inc Child Containment Center features wand-making, custom-build light-saber workshops, comic-book creation, and bead bracelet fabrication for the Young Nerdling in your life, or spend some quality time hanging out with your sprogs in the ball pit.
Fandoms are all about community, and we have so many great community members enlisted already! Our work with local schools, from Junior Highs to Idaho State University, will springboard into even more passion-related events in our region!
What We’ll Do With Your Help:
Any gathering of this size has some items that need to be paid for before the gate receipts come in. We’re committed to using Kickstarter funds for durable assets we’ll use this year, and for many years to come, such as security team walkie-talkies, supplies for our very own TARDIS, a Sign-EEZ sign-hanging system, supplies for the kids’ activities and Hogwarts rooms.
If we exceed our goal, we’ll initiate Phase Two: Helen’s Husband’s Sanity Fund: year-round rental on a secure storage unit for all the Snake River Comic Con goodies, so they don’t live in Helen’s guest room. With your help, Snake River Comic Con will have a fantastic debut in late September 2017, and get bigger and better as we go along!
Risks and challenges
We’re realistic: real life happens. But we’re also committed to anticipating as much as possible, and eliminating as many risks as we can!
There’s zero risk of the convention not happening. Every venue has been secured, and we have a strong volunteer crew to make it all happen.
We’re combating the risk of low debut attendance (which can kill a gathering and leave the organizers in debt) by heavy social media promotion on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. We’ve contracted with 4 local radio stations for advertising and ticket giveaways. We’re interviewing with radio stations and podcasters across the nation, to make sure more than just our local communities want to attend this year and for years to come.
Large crowds carry inherent risks; accidents happen, and there are very rare cases of nefarious intent to anticipate, as well. We have a trained security team, led by a retired law enforcement officer, on-site and available at all times during Snake River Comic Con. We have insurance in place to protect guests, attendees, and the venue facilities.
We’re committed to individual security as well. “Cos-Play is NOT Consent” banners will be prominently displayed in each venue, and our security teams are specifically trained to deal with the type of predator this positive movement references. We want everyone to feel safe and confident, no matter the cos-play or fandom!
Our staff base has organized and staffed a combined 500+ similar events, from smaller gatherings of 100, to over 100,000, in diverse places and populations. We can’t promise zero risk, but we know how to anticipate and remove 90%, and have the skills to deal with whatever weirdness the other 10% tosses our way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
