Tornadoes and Waterspouts in Europe is a coffee table book showing the evolution of our understanding about tornadoes and waterspouts in Europe from 1555 to 1910.

Since 2015 I have been sharing an old depiction of a European tornado or waterspout on my personal website every week. I became fascinated with these old drawings and diagrams whilst working on a scientific article summarising what we know about these weather phenomena in Europe since the nineteenth century. I am lucky enough that my job - I am a research scientist studying thunderstorms - allows me to rediscover such amazing things about the history of extreme weather events.

A look inside the book

Over the past six months, I have been working hard to find and select the best quality images and most interesting examples of these fascinating extreme weather events.  I have extensively researched the history behind the pictures and condensed the information into interesting descriptions to accompany each image.

The book has 100 pages and contains 38 depictions of tornadoes and waterspouts. The depictions chosen for this book range from the most extraordinarily beautiful to those that can shed light on how our understanding of tornadoes evolved in time, from those used as illustrations in scientific articles to those used as illustrations in children's books.

Specifications

The book is designed as a hardcover book with a dust jacket. The book size is standard landscape (25 cm x 20 cm, 10" x 8" ) and is going to be printed on semi-matte, 80# (118 GSM) paper.

Timeline

Shortly after the Kickstarter campaign has ended, the book will be sent for printing. After I receive the printed books, I will start shipping (approximately early November).

I will be using UK Royal Mail for all shipping so anticipated shipping times and costs will be:

  • to UK: 1–2 days, £3
  • to Europe: 3–5 days, £5
  • to USA and Canada: 5–7 days, £6
  • to the Rest of the World: 7–10 days, £10

These timings are the longest I anticipate so potentially the book will be delivered earlier.

Other rewards

Besides the book reward, there are also large postcards and stickers of some of the best images from the book offered as smaller or supplementary rewards.

Risks and challenges

The risks associated with this project are very low because I do not anticipate any significant challenges on fulfilling my commitment to backers. The book is already finished and if I reach the funding goal, then is just a matter of printing and shipping the books. If I do not reach the funding goals then your credit card will not be charged.
