The Great Old Ones have returned!

Posted by Chaosium Inc. (Creator)

Greetings to all our Patient Backers,

We have pressed the reset button... In 1975 Chaosium started out as a quirky boutique game company. We were all about creativity, artistry and craftsmanship. With every game we provided you with new realms of imagination and entertainment. Over the last few years we forgot that, and lost our way.

The Great Old Ones have Returned…
Greg Stafford, founder of Chaosium and creative force during its heyday, is now President. Sandy Petersen, world renowned game designer who brought Cthulhu into the light three decades ago, has rejoined the team as well.

Greg says: "Chaosium is part of my legacy. My intent is to restore it to its rightful place in the world of gaming. Something we can all take pride in, and something that fans will look forward to.Where 'what’s next?' is answered with 'I can’t wait'."

The Stars are Right…
Sandy says: "I am excited to return to active participation in the Call of Cthulhu line, and I’m eagerly looking forward to working directly with Greg again. We are Chaosium's original team from the 1980s. My first focus is going to be the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition Kickstarter campaign."

Our main plan is simple (but will be a lot of work):

  • Quickly sift and sort through the current company problems
  • Immediately ship the remaining Horror on the Orient Express backer rewards
  • Focus on the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition Kickstarter backer rewards
  • Return to regularly making awesome new games.

We offer new hope, and ask only for your patience."

Please visit for regular news and updates. Contact us with questions, kudos, curses, or kindness. We are listening, and we will respond.

Greg Stafford, President and CEO of Chaosium Inc.
I’m puttin' the band back together.

Is it unfair to want something a little extra for how long we've been waiting?
I'm not expecting the moon or anything but anything would be fantastic

We're waited so long for this

    2. Ariock

I'm as excited of the possibilities of this as anyone, however "Oct 2013" was a LONG time ago.

Let's focus on what you've promised before pipe-dreaming please.

    3. Robert Cowry Jeffries on

So ... Does this mean that stuff got shipped? Or ... Is shipping? Or ... Missed the May shipping deadline?

      Whats the status?

We are on the "bleeding edge" with this, and I have no doubt that Chaosium bit off a lot more than they could chew within the original deadlines with the huge and complicated project this grew into with all the additional add-ons and so on, and I'm sure there've been some inevitable unexpected supply-and-demand and labor bottlenecks involved in a project of this size, so I'm really not surprised at the delays we've seen. I'm sure the folks in charge before were doing everything in their power to keep things moving, and I can't imagine the "new" guys are going to be able to move things much faster. Hopefully a change in leadership will mean somewhat better communication with the backers and customers, but I really believe that everyone involved have been nothing but honest and professional, and have been doing their best and will continue to do so, so in the end I'm sure we'll see results that are worth the wait. To be completely fair to the communications from the folks who've been running things until now, we have seen enough transparency to have been given sample previews, insight into the editing and decision-making processes involved in making a quality finished product, e-book versions of completed work as well as access to preview drafts, and sample photos of what the finished product are expected to look like, and hints of where at least some of the bottlenecks are at (obtaining art on time, for example), so we know that Chaosium have been doing at least that much of the work and that most (if not all) of the ingredients are already there and as ready as they can be for completion, even if they have not yet been completely printed and shipped yet. In any case, welcome back, Sandy and Greg, and good luck!

    5. Frank Troise on

This has certainly been a p.r. nightmare for Chaosium and I suppose that is why things have changed within the company.

    6. James Boldock on

In all honesty I find it rather unexciting that Sandy and Greg have returned to Chaosium. The entire experience has rather sullied my love of the game, I am almost 'over it' and I'm not going to bother getting my hopes up on a project that seems to me to be dead in the water. Chaosium completely need to turn themselves around and need to be posting regularly twice monthly and be completely transparent before I can care about this project again but I have my doubts about that will happen.

    7. Daniel Brigman on

A post in April stated, "The Rulebook, Investigator Handbook, and Keeper Screen pack are all at print. We are still expecting delivery sometime in May."

The most recent update (6/2) is confusing at best, and I've We, as backers, need specifics and not placating gestures to be "patient." For example, what is going on with the printed books? Why haven't they been sent out, as expected?

I can definitely be patient, as I have no choice in all honesty, but I suppose I am just concerned that a company that received over half a million dollars, which was vastly more than the minimum amount needed for the project, in backer funds is not providing clear and timely updates. If there was an issue with the company, then it should been made plain on this Kickstarter, and, as backers we would have tried to understand. Anyway, I just don't want to see this one relatively large mistake and/or oversight undermine the integrity of a company which produces high quality materials.

This Kickstarter project, is in merely need of some constructive feedback, and I am, in no way, insinuating that any purposeful dishonesty has occurred. Please just provide continual, thoughtful, and up-to-date information.

    8. RDP

Guys I think they realize the big issues they've had with this KS and the other one (I cheated and bought HotOE at retail store). We are going to have to be a little more patient as they clean up this mess. I totally get the frustration and this has delayed me from even trying to play CoC with friends but I think we are headed on the right track now.

    9. John Dominguez on

How about a monthly status on where the kickstarter and rewards stand? Two years overdue now? We've given plenty of patience.

    10. "Filkertom" Tom Smith

      I could not be happier.

    11. Ciro Alessandro Sacco on

I really, really look forward to it and wait eagerly CoC VII edition!

    12. David Wetzel on

It sounds like Chaosium is in good hands. I'm a pretty patient guy but I will also suggest more frequent communications.

In any case we love CoC and want nothing but success for it!

    13. Bruno Follmann on

Being a satisfied Cthulhu Wars backer, in Sandy I trust.

    14. Keith Robbins on

Brilliant news. I know there have been issues but the future looks exceedingly brighter now.

    15. Cameron Manski on

      This is great news !!!

I'm very excited and happy to hear that Greg and Sandy are returning to the fold. Welcome back!

So there is this "Focus on the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition Kickstarter backer rewards " task you mention.
The very first sub-tasks here is "Providing backers a detailed update on where things are standing now". With "Providing backers realistic production and shipment plans and estimates" being a close second.
      Are we ok with this?
I am not vilifying you for the delays. I'm just eager to know what is the situation. And I guess many backers are in the same frame of mind.

    18. Newt Newport on

All the best on this exciting new adventure :)

    19. Dave Griffin on

      Greetings! Welcome back.

I'm waiting patiently for both HotOE and CoC7, and looking forward to receiving both.
As far as any current problems go - regular communication, and ensuring backers get their rewards before retailers goes a long way towards sorting things out.

      Chris Green on

Thank you to everyone at Chaosium for their work on 7th edition. Thank you to Greg and Sandy for returning to help while these two troublesome KS's come into the world.

One of the strengths of a community is to forgive and provide comfort in times of need. I have faith that we will see a new tomorrow and when that day comes it will be amazing. I am content to be patient.

    21. J-P Spore on

Delays are part and parcel of the KS experience, and while I'm disappointed this is taking so long I'm confident that it will be worth the wait. That being said...

If there were company problems that would impact your promises, it would have been nice to know that in advance. Not much you can do about that now, I know, but when you say there was a major shake up in the company and then update us with a vague "we lost our way," I also become concerned about future communications. What happened?

Also, since you're looking for feedback: I'd personally like to see updates every two or so weeks, with *specifics* on where the project is, what problems are popping up or getting knocked down, updated delivery timelines, and so on. It wouldn't take too much time out of someone's day, but that extra hour or two every other week would make me feel a lot more comfortable with trusting you guys. Solid, thorough communication, even if there isn't much new information, even when things are falling down around your ears (*especially* then, actually), covers a multitude of sins.

    22. Adam Doochin

Well, this is good news as far as I'm concerned. Sandy and his company managed their Cthulhu Wars Kickstarter wonderfully and provided a great product that I was thrilled to support. I hope they quickly get Chaosium's house in order and can get back on track with 7th.

To everyone that wants a detailed update on the progress of 7th, I can only copy what they posted that I think a lot of you didn't bother to read:

"Quickly sift and sort through the current company problems
Immediately ship the remaining Horror on the Orient Express backer rewards
Focus on the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition Kickstarter backer rewards"

My guess is that they have to figure out the state of things before they have accurate information to share about, as I just mentioned, the state of things. Give them some time to get everything in order. Company transitions are a messy business, and the fact that they've been open about this shakeup that's just occurred tells me they'll be open about where things stand when they get a handle on it.

    23. Jay Watson

Yes! All hail the Great Old Ones! Welcome back to Greg and Sandy! :D ("Any chance of a reprint/reissue of Petersen's Field Guide?", he asks, with a grin)

    24. Nick Brooke on

Congratulations, Greg & Sandy! I look forward with great interest (and patience, and optimism) to whatever comes next from the Chaosium.

    25. Rory on

This is indeed an interesting development, and there really isn;t many game designers that have higher prestige than these two. Does this mean both Greg (Pendragon) and Sandy (Cthulhu Wars) will be bringing some of their own IPs back into the Chaosium brand too?

    26. Michael Wild

Let us know how we, the folks that cared enough to risk out money and wait, can help. I am hoping there is enough done to get the product out. The PDFs of the books are great. In the end I want 7th Edition finished. I was keeper for five games in two conventions in in Portland using 7th edition--it was well received. So again, tell us what you need to get done--we'll help!

      Jesse on

And still no actual information or status on where all of our items are. You guys realize that you're 1.5 YEARS overdue right?

    28. Ian Tong on

Look, I don't care what is happening with the structure of your company. What I do care about is that your first update since missing the May shipping estimate barely mentions the project at all.

    29. Missing avatar

I've been quite happy with the way things have gone so far, but this can only make things better. Welcome back to the team, Sandy and Greg, great to have you!

    31. NH on

As a fan of both of you from way back, that is very good news. Hopefully everyone else involved is in a good place. Sandy's recent Kickstarter successes and experience certainly will make others feel better.

      Two Words: Fan Tastic!

    33. Matt on

After they assess what has happened, it'll be interesting to see how much of our funds still exist.

    34. Ken Thronberry on

Of course this is wonderful news; a development better than I ever would have expected. How soon might we see revised delivery estimates for the various reward items?

    35. Mark L

Good to hear Greg and Sandy are back. Fond memories from many years ago. I have renewed optimism that things will get worked out eventually.

    36. Brandon Watkins on

I had lost all hope after seeing how horribly this Kickstarter has been mismanaged. I've seen what Sandy has been capable of doing with his own Kickstarter, Cthulhu Wars, so I'm confident that this change is for the best. Once he gets control of the situation I have no doubt that we'll get a realistic update with accurate dates and frequent communication until the final product is delivered as promised. This can only be good news.

    37. Missing avatar

      Riff Conner on

I guess I'm so used to production of anything taking longer than you expect -- even if you expect it -- that I hadn't realized there was any particular problem. Great to hear the old gang is back together though, and I can't wait to see what you come up with. I, for one, don't mind waiting as long as it takes, if there's a full-quality product at the end.

    38. Adrian on

So what, exactly, does this mean? How does "current company problems" impact on the delivery of this Kickstarter and finishing off HotOS, both of which I have backed??

Rather than writing an obscure update with no real information, I would really appreciate a clearer understanding of what is going to happen and when.

    39. Jeff Richards

Excellent news. As a fan of Chaosium from the Old Days, it's fantastic to see the original team back in the saddle. And this gives me huge confidence for the Kickstarter as well. Sandy has been doing amazing work with Petersen Games' Kickstarters, so this is great for Chaosium to bring him back.

    40. Billy Mickelson on

Big news, that's for sure. I'm glad to see the return of old friends. Still, I love my new "Horror on the Orient Express."

I'm still loyal! You don't need that knife!

    41. Brother Jim on

This is tremendous news. This is going to be made right. Seeing Sandy at Chaosium again fills me not only with optimism about the future of the company but also genuine emotion. I am over the moon about this.

    42. AJ the Ronin on

If there are results I'll say this is a good thing. If thing keep dragging on I'll just see this as a diversion from the fact that we, the backers, still are on the dark regarding where the books are (at the printer? On about?) and still no final PDF.

    43. SE Weaver

So confirmation that I should chuck this KS into the "I'll believe it when I see it" bin. Gotcha.

    44. Max Glasner

Oh... I just thought there was simple production delays. Didn't realize there was so much trouble in paradise.

Good to see you on board Greg, I still look very forward to seeing the final product and I'd rather you guys take the time to do it RIGHT then to just get it DONE.

    45. Charles Dexter Ward

Interesting. i can't wait to see what comes of this...

This is interesting news. Can we expect a road map from you at some point with some date milestones? I understand you might be hesitant to promise dates, but I think the community would appreciate some idea of how long you expect each step to take.
