The Book of Giants, by Petar Meseldzija
journey with the artist and writer Petar Meseldzija, who tells how he was
allowed unparalleled access through the Invisible Curtain and into the land of
giants. A year in the making, this book’s sixteen paintings and nearly ninety
drawings bring to life Petar’s experiences on this journey and secrets uncovered,
going back to ancient times. He shares stories of new discoveries that free giants from the murky
abyss of myth and a forgotten past.
Told in three stages, The Book of Giants includes the illustrated stories The Giants Are Coming, recounting a dynamic clash that lasted one hundred years; The Little Kingdom, where a giant befriends a nation of humans and becomes their adamant protector against ferocious invaders; The Northern Giants, who embrace the warrior spirit through countless battles; Giant Velles, the story of ignorance and how the strength of goodness perseveres; and The Great Forest, wherein the author discovers little creatures called the keppetz and relates his experiences spent with ogres while on his quest to meet the Golden One and to determine the purpose of his journey. Through the strength of his own power, he discovers his blessings, his limitations and finally his personal myth.
Furthermore, you will discover why giants made a push into the underground, followed by their exodus and deliverance to a new land. You’ll also learn why the myth of giants is still alive, why their time spent with humans remains elusive and why giants prefer to remain hidden in their world. Join Petar Meseldzija on his journey of discovery.

“Exactly five years ago, shortly after Spectrum 16 came out in which one of my paintings—accidentally a painting of giants—was awarded the Spectrum Gold Award,I received an email from one of the organizers of the Breda Comic Festival from the Netherlands. He invited me to join the show, and at the same time informed me about an attending U.S. publisher who, after seeing the awarded painting in the Spectrum annual, was now showing the interest in my work. That publisher was John Fleskes, the head and the beating heart of Flesk Publications. Soon after, John and I got in contact. Then a year later, the Flesk edition of my book The Legend of Steel Bashaw saw the light. I was delighted, not only because after two years of fruitless attempts to find a foreign publisher for my major book I finally found one, but also because--it soon became clear to me--this publisher strives to achieve a level of excellence in his field, as I do in mine. It was a perfect match! John Fleskes was, and still is, the embodiment of the principles from which all great and lasting creations spring from: having a vision, or dare follow one’s dream; aiming to deliver a product of the highest quality possible; a healthy mixture of enthusiasm and idealism, combined with professionalism and a perfect feeling for conducting business; passion for the work--art and books in John’s case--and a desire to share this fascination with others; utterly respectful approach to people he works with--both artists and public; and a remarkable sense of responsibility regarding all aspects of the trade.”
Petar Meseldzija is one of those "demanding" artists to work with. I say this in a flattering way since we are alike in this way. We are tough on ourselves and push ourselves to grow on a daily basis. When I first saw Petar's art, I could see the demanding nature that he had in himself. I knew he was someone that was rarely satisfied and therefore would be unstoppable in his pursuit to master the brushstroke and line. When we met for the first time it was as if seeing an old friend--the type who you haven't seen for years, but who you pick right back up with as if there was no gap since last you spoke. It helps that we share the same humor, too. Our inner intensity is masked by our jubilant conversations. It just so happens that I think he is an important and significant painter as well. It is my honor to be in a position to publish Petar's work and help in sharing his stories with the world.
Petar: “Throughout the history, many glorious creations, including the creations of art, had been made possible only through the financial and moral support by certain individuals, mostly kings and noblemen, as well as by religious and sometimes state institutions. This form of patronage had played a crucial role in the development of culture. Without patronage the bellies of artists would have been emptier, and our museums poorer.
"I see Kickstarter as one of those wonderful initiatives that embody the same spirit, and follow in the footsteps of those old-time patrons by allowing new patrons to do their share. One doesn’t have to be a king anymore in order to contribute to the creation of a new “Mona Lisa”. And the artist is not forced to wait until a wealthy nobleman comes along to finance the creation of a new “Night Watch.” I am sure both Leonardo Da Vinci and Rembrandt would have been delighted by such wonderful opportunity.”
John: "What Kickstarter offers, first and foremost, is a chance to build connections and goodwill with our supporters. It affords us the opportunity to connect, create and give to our supporters in a direct and personal way that makes the process more enjoyable than if we were simply working behind closed doors. It is also gratifying to have the opportunity to continually add value to the book and gifts through stretch goals for your support. And to me, we aren’t making a product, we are making a unique art book that we can be proud of and that we hope will be cherished by our supporters."
Risks and challenges
Why you should trust Flesk Publications? John answers:
"I pride myself on having a twelve year record of delivering over fifty books on time and of the highest quality. And I ran three previous Kickstarter campaigns, one with Brom and the other with Mark Schultz, both of which were delivered on time. Our third campaign was with Frank Cho. We were two weeks late shipping the Cho books due to the books being stuck on the docks due to a California port crisis. Things don't always go exactly as planned in the publishing world. Much of the time they do, but sometimes an unexpected problem or delay arises. In the rare case that this happens, simply put, I deal with it and find a way to get the job done. I am very open about any challenges and like to share in the process so people know what's going on. I don't like surprises, and don't feel anyone else should either. I respect the artist, and our supporters too much to let them down. The good thing is that I've published over fifty books and I know how to get them shipped and delivered, and I know how to manage a schedule and keep projects on track, and I will stay motivated and energized to get the books into your hands when I said I would. Bottom line, I would not have been around this long without an excellent track record."
