About this project
***UPDATE*** THANKS FOR ALL YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT!
Thanks to our incredible backers we have reached our minimum goal of $30,000 in less than 30 days! We are so thrilled and amazed to have reached this sum so quickly. Now that we have $30,000 we can hired an editor, sound designer, sound mixer, composer and color correction artist to complete the documentary!
But we still have a long way to go ... $30,000 is an incredible show of generosity, and we want to make sure that we give you the best film possible. Our minds have been blown by this Kickstarter campaign and the possibilities it could mean for Out & Around. We hope to keep the momentum going beyond our post-production minimum, so we can use the additional funds for the following costs:
With $40,000 raised we can acquire important stock footage to cut into the film such as Prince Manvendra (featured in our trailer) appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show as the world's first openly gay prince: http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Royalty-on-The-Oprah-Show/3
And news footage of the very publicized political debate going on in Uganda regarding the "Kill the Gays" bill: http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2013/01/2013121392698654.html
This type of footage will really help us inform the audience of gay rights in each country of Jenni and Lisa's visit. We will get a better sense of both the government and the people's attitudes towards acceptance around the world.
With $50,000 we can hire producer and sales representatives to try and obtain distribution deals around the world including a theatrical release, Video On Demand, and DVD sales. That way you'll be able to see Out & Around wherever you are! We will also use these funds to pay for film festival applications and marketing (two very important costs in independent film).
With $60,000 we can do follow up interviews with some of the amazing people from the Out & Around journey. We can see how far gay rights have come, not only in the US, but around the world!
Thank you again to everyone who has helped the campaign and please know that it is your generosity of spirit, with donations and spreading the word, that is making Out & Around a reality!
ABOUT THE FILM:
Out & Around is an inspiring feature documentary about two women's journey to find the global leaders of the LGBT movement.
When Jenni & Lisa first fell in love, they vowed to follow a life of adventure. But this business manager and social worker had no idea that their promise would lead them to leave their 9-5 jobs, pick up a video camera, and travel through Asia, Africa and South America in search of the people who are leading the movement for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. Combining intimate verite and video-journal footage of this couple's yearlong journey with their interviews of LGBT leaders across the developing world, Out & Around documents the momentous changes occurring in the status of queer people around the world today. The film follows Jenni and Lisa as they prepare for their trip, hunt for the LGBT leaders, get engaged on a beach in the Philippines, travel through 15 countries of adventure, struggle with their identities and their relationship, and meet extraordinary people who are changing the world.

WHY THIS FILM:
We want to expose people to the global struggle of the LGBT civil rights movement. It's easy to think only in terms of what's happening currently in the US. But our fight for equal rights is occurring throughout the world, not just here at home. Homosexuality is still illegal in 76 countries and punishable by death or life imprisonment in 10.
And while many documentaries have addressed LGBT issues in developing countries, none have offered an intimate portrait across such a wide-breadth of geographies threaded together by the personal journey of one couple whose own story mirrors that of the global movement. We want to take you on the adventure with us.
Jenni and Lisa signed on with filmmakers Lauren Fash and Susan Graham who will act as director and producer. Their latest film Quiet has been recognized as a film that's captured our changing attitudes in the US about gay rights. They believe Out & Around will be the first mainstream film to document gay rights on a global level.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
In order to finish the film we need to raise at least $30,000 to hire an editor to cut 120 hours of footage, a composer to write the score, a sound designer and a color correction artist. We will also need funds in order to acquire stock footage and pay for festival applications. $30,000 is the absolute minimum amount in order to complete the film so the more money we raise the better. If we hit our goal we could be seeing Out & Around in theaters as early as the end of this year!
IF WE DON'T MEET OUR GOAL:
Unfortunately, if we don't raise at least $30,000 in the next two months we don't get to keep any of your donations. This is an all or nothing kind of deal!

Risks and challenges
There are often setbacks when it comes to filmmaking. Fortunately for us, the production phase of the project has been completed. The biggest risk we face is the amount of time it will take to whittle 120 hours of footage into a cohesive and compelling story (keep in mind most feature films are approximately 90 minutes). In order to be able to make this happen, we need to have the funds to hire an editor, post-production sound team, color correction professional and composer. The biggest risks associated with these positions are budget and time, but thanks to our experience we have assembled a crew that is willing and able to work on the film for our fundraising goal in a timely manner. We have been realistic about budgeting and how long the phases of filmmaking take. And then we've given ourselves leeway for unforeseen crises.
A large part of filmmaking is collaboration: we are eager to fundraise on Kickstarter because this film is the story of a global community and should have the chance to be produced by that community. We want the global LGBT community to come together for Out & Around. We are aware that setbacks occur (and have experienced our share in post production) but feel confident that, if fully funded, Out and Around will be a groundbreaking film that our backers can be proud to call their own.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
