NEW "STRETCH GOAL" OF $25,000!

PLEASE KEEP PLEDGING!  $20,000 was the bare minimum we needed to move forward.  Help us reach our new "stretch goal" to cover the Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees.  When you raise $20,000 on Kickstarter, you only receive about $18,000.  The extra funds will also help us fulfill your rewards faster.  Thank you so much!  We couldn't have done any of this without each and every one of you!

!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!

We are thrilled to announce that Jessy Holtermann will be joining the cast of Hyperion as the lead character, Ren.

"I am so excited to be a part of this team. Hyperion tackles a difficult subject in a very loving and honest way. As someone who has Cystic Fibrosis, this film hits especially close to home. I am thankful to have the opportunity to help spread awareness of this disease. And I am thankful to do it with such a wonderful cast and crew."

Hyperion - A Film By Boman Modine

Hyperion is the story of Ren, a college senior, who is in the hospital recovering from an infection caused by her Cystic Fibrosis. A naturalist at heart, she turns to painting a Redwood forest around her hospital room when she is no longer allowed outside.

When Carl visits Ren, despite the fact her family doesn’t want him around, Ren tells him she doesn’t want to waste away as a victim. As he struggles to do something, anything, for the woman that he loves, Carl comes to the radical conclusion that he, and his best friend Phil, can escape with Ren and travel to the Redwoods on a road trip north, fulfilling Ren’s lifelong dream to the majestic trees in person.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disease, usually developing during early childhood and affecting mainly the pancreas, respiratory system, and sweat glands. It is characterized by the production of abnormally viscous mucus by the affected glands, usually resulting in chronic respiratory infections and impaired pancreatic function.

Eva Markvoort and Cystic Fibrosis

Boman Modine, the writer and director of Hyperion, was inspired to develop this story after watching Eva Markvoort’s online videos chronicling her life with Cystic Fibrosis.

Working with the CF Community

We want to creatively give back to the cystic fibrosis community and ensure the accuracy of the Hyperion story. Thus, we are really lucky to be working with three amazing foundations: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Rock CF and the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation. We’ve made a commitment to help these organizations to raise awareness and garner support throughout the process of making Hyperion.

Cast

Wesam Keesh as “Carl”

Wesam was raised most of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Union High School and followed up the rest of acting, theater, and film study at the University of Tulsa. He spent a summer in London at Imperial College focusing on theatre and the arts. Wesam moved to Los Angeles immediately after college to begin his professional film and television career. Some of his TV and Film work include a recurring on FOX’s Touch and Indie Film Santiago which won the Silver Palm Award at Mexico’s International Film Festival. He is currently a recurring character on MTV’s Awkward.

Eddie Hassell as “Phil”

Eddie Hassell was a small town boy from Texas before he decided that his dream was to take on the big city of LA and hit the big screen. Eddie has come far in his career and has been a part of some award-winning projects. His talent not only as an actor, but as a skater has landed him promising roles and his desire to keep going has proved him ready and willing to try new things and experience the full world of acting. He starred in the award-winning film The Kids Are Alright as well as Jobs, the Steve Job’s bio pic with Ashton Kutcher.

Crew

Writer and Director: Boman Modine

Originally from New York City, Boman grew up thinking he would end up being a History Professor. He picked up a camera for a few extra college credits and has been following the dream of making movies ever since.

Instead of going back to film school, Boman taught himself Final Cut Pro and got a job working at an Apple store and eventually earned a position in the New York Film Academy’s editing bay. Continuing to produce smaller projects he earned his way to LA by working for the VFX team on The Dark Knight Rises.

Hyperion will be his fourth short film. He’s worked on projects for Funny or Die, the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, as well as HBO.

Boman was inspired to write Ren’s story after reading Eva Markvoort’s Livejournal about living with Cystic Fibrosis:

http://65redroses.livejournal.com/

Her honesty and sincerity were, both, touching and compelled Boman to create something that would bring attention to the strength of those living with this disease.

Producers

Strangeway Productions

Strangeway Productions, founded in 2010, in New York City by Boman Modine and Joe Toronto who have gone on to produce work for FunnyorDie.com, HBO and have developed the Classless pilot directed Nick Bernardone of 30Rock.

However Productions

However Productions, founded in 2009, in Los Angeles by Susan Posluszny after working on projects for Comedy Central and MTV. In 2012 she partnered with Lauren Fash to develop the award-winning short film Quiet. The feature version has been green-lit and is currently in pre-production.

Cinematographer: Damian Horan

2012 ASC Heritage Award Winner, Damian moved out to Los Angeles in 2007 to join the production program at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Damian is a narrative filmmaker who enjoys telling stories visually. He has shot pieces for the Foo Fighters, Coca-Cola, Sony, and Forever 21/Hello Kitty to name a few. His narrative work can be seen on several films currently playing on the festival circuit.

Damian brings his excellent visual storytelling to Hyperion, please take a look at his reel (there are muppets!)

Soundtrack by “Me and Mr. Cassidy”

Both recent 2010 transports to Hollywood hailing from Washington D.C. (Hope) and Billings, Montana ( Scott) – the two met chasing the same dream. After being introduced by a mutual friend, Hope & Scott played their first LA show together at the Room 5 in Hollywood Halloween of 2010.

With their unique and refreshing style of music, they’re bringing a wonderful tone to our movie.

Artwork by “Thomas W. Schaller”

Long been considered one of the foremost architectural artists in the world, Thomas Schaller, has won every major award for his artwork – including being a two-time recipient of the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize. He has authored two books ; the best-selling, and AIA award of merit winner, Architecture in Watercolor, and The Art of Architectural Drawing. He is increasingly in demand internationally to conduct his watercolor workshop series, “The Architecture of Light”.

He’s contributing his talent to both provide artwork that will appear in the movie as well as a wonderful, and original, piece that will be our poster.

Why Donate? And Why Kickstarter?

In fundraising for this film, we wanted to spread the word about Cystic Fibrosis. With Hyperion, it’s not only about making a film, it’s about creating art that enlightens and engages people. For that we need a community, we need you, and your support to make this film into a reality.

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness month. We wanted to introduce ourselves to the community that’s out there and spread the word that a project like this is being done. By going with Kickstarter we have a platform to do this amongst goodhearted people who believe, along with us, that Ren’s story should be told.

Where Your Donations Go

One of the things we love about this format of crowed-funding is that you’ll get to see where exactly your contributions will go.

Panavision Prep: We have received the Panavision Grant to use their cameras and equipment but they require a preparation day which still costs a significant amount. This is our first and most important goal to reach so we can use the best film camera system in the world!

Production Insurance: This will be important for the safety of our cast and crew. And it’s also required by law

Additional Equipment: While the majority of what we need we hope to have donated, we do need some special items including a rig for filming the car scenes on the road trip, specialized medical equipment for the hospital and a generator for shooting at night.

Locations and Travel: We’ll be making this movie largely on the move. While we wanted to shoot this in Los Angeles it is, quite frankly, too expensive and so we’ve moved to the outer cities in the region. This is cheaper, but still has costs: transporting and feeding even a small cast and crew gets expensive when you consider hotels, vehicles and how much a key grip can eat in a day. It’s important to us that we get authentic locations for the film and these are pricey. We save a lot by leaving LA (where hospital sets can easily run as much as $10,000 per day) but need your help to keep everyone safe and happy.

Post Production: The all-important editing process where we take what we’ve done, cut it into a thousand pieces, then tape it back together. This process is long, arduous, but it’s where the movie comes to life.

Film Festival submission fees: Self-explanatory- these are the gatekeepers to bringing the movie off the Youtube/Vimeo channels and onto the Silver Screen near you. Each film festival submission costs between $40 – $100 dollars.

REWARDS!!

We’ve been really fortunate to be helped by so many different people and organizations in the development of Hyperion.

AMAZING ROCK CF T-SHIRT/HYPERION FILM T-SHIRT:

In the course of the film, we see some of Ren’s artwork, including sketches and concept art for future paintings. We see her hard at work on a couple of paintings, generously provided by the artist. Lucky backers will get to be a part of this literal art “history” and Mr. Schaller’s process:

A RARE COPY OF THE CHILDREN'S BOOK MALLORY'S 65 ROSES:

Mallory's 65 Roses is the engaging story of Mallory, a creative and energetic little girl, afflicted with cystic fibrosis.  The author, Diane Shader Smith, has been kind enough to donate 20 signed copies of this collector's item:

Long Term Goals

Ultimately our hope is to create a feature length film, the best way to do that is show what we can do with the team we have. Everyone involved in the film has made this their passion project, coming from every kind of background that you can imagine to make this story.

As we progress through our campaign we’ll show you our progress and you’ll be able to see what our goals beyond 20,000 dollars will be including a Camera Fly-by Drone and Visual Effects detailing things like the life-cycle of a Redwood.

We’ve all come together to tell this story and to bring awareness to those living with Cystic Fibrosis. With your help and donations you will make this film a reality.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FROM ALL OF US!!!

Risks and challenges

Our story takes place in three major locations: A hospital, a freeway and the Redwood forests themselves in northern California. All of this provides unique logistical problems for the cast and crew. In addition, the many professionals working on our team have a small window that they're all available to work in so we need to hit the ground running from preproduction to post.

We've set a full week to get all of this done with extra days for travel as we move around the state.

We have created an excellent team as well as earned the enthusiasm of friends, family and the Cystic Fibrosis foundations listed. All contributions given by you will find their place in the stages of our production.
