You may have heard that life in Steelbridge is easy, but I'll tell you the truth: it isn't. Every citizen has to deal with the four guild chiefs. Sid is the leader of them all, the chief of the Iron Industries Guild and who delivers all the steam power the city’s heart needs to keep on beating. His word is law in here.

So then this is Steelbridge, the rotten and corrupt city where Izzy lives. But she does not care, not since her father was killed by a zeppelin accident, leaving behind a promising research. Everything that Izzy matters is to carry on that research by her own. She may be the one who will start a new era, the era of the holographic technology. She may be the one who will change the way the energy works, the one who may destroy all the four guilds’ power. But for sure, she will be the one every mighty man of Steelbridge wants to see dead.

Izzy's Revenge is a 2D action/platformer game where exploration and character progression get an important factor. In order to success her quest, Izzy will have to make her way through a large number of enemies, travel by zeppelin and steam train, improve her weapons and skills to burst into the defenses of the four guilds and finish off with all their bosses and killers.

Features:

The great amount of the 2D games which adopt an intense melee combat system don't allow for their whole exploration. If you want to explore the game universe you simply can't because the game is focused only in combat. Our purpose of Izzy's Revenge is to put both things together within an evolving and dangerous world which explains its story by itself.


The aesthetics

Making the art the way we desired hasn't been an easy task. We had to redo the art style because it did not look like the way we wanted to, but now we have this colorfully illustrated steampunk world and well, we can say the work was worth. Just in case you're wondering, everything we show in-game is 'work in progress', there are some assets and animations that need to be polished.

Combat system


The combat system is one of the key points of the game, and we aim it to be perfect. We want to make our game frenetic, with enough power ups, weapons and improvements in order to make combinations as much as possible so that each player could find out its own way to play.

  • We bet on frenetic battles against big enemies groups.
  • The movement point of the combats lies in binding simple combos to generate very powerful ones.
  • New and more advanced combat movements could be unlocked in the Shop.

Holographic weaponry

Izzy is armed with a weapon prototype which works with the holographic energy and it can adopt any shape if you have its pattern plans, the very ones which were stolen from her. These pattern plans are hidden all over the levels.  

If Izzy finds one of them, she can go to the Resistance Shop to install the improvements, though it won't be for free: she should give a completely disinterested donation in order that the Resistance can go on fighting without a break.

Levels

The main story is organized in four environments which run into each area of the city, each one governed by one guild. Every environment consists of various levels and a final boss who will be the chief of the guild. 
The levels are big ones with a lot of different paths and different ways of reaching the objective. 

Regarding the Final Bosses of the stages we can assure they will be difficult. We're tired of gigantic final bosses who die at the third hit. You can forget that kind of behaviour in Steelbridge.

 

Game modes

  • Story: It is the normal mode. You make progress through the game levels in a linear way, killing the guild bosses and progressing into the story.
  • Arena: On a particular point in the story this mode is unlocked. It consists in challenges focused on the combats where Izzy can win new weapons, some money or secret items if she succeed in finishing some of the special challenges, then she could use them in the story mode.

Steelbridge is a filthy, rotten, industrial city. It is governed by the guilds bosses and its inhabitants obey them. But some of them who are fed up with that blind obedience, have created a Resistance against the guilds. Some of its tasks, all of them of national interest, are to fill up all the hidden and no-one visited corners of the city with revolutionary graffitis and discussing their attacking plans in the secret and weekly assemblies which are never carried through.

He is obsessed with flying since his wife and daughter died, he lives alone in the highest aerodrome tower, searching for a way to fly without using a flying-machine, just like birds. The aerodrome has been filled up with followers of him, vile killers who attack everyone and think Cecil is a Messiah. Anyway, the aerodrome is still working and wealthy people use its zeppelins to travel to many different cities, although they never start their journeys without writing their will.

Julius is an alchemist who has dedicated his whole life to synthesize the eternal youth elixir. He uses all of his time investigating formulas and seeking the ingredients to make them perfect. He tests the most of his potions on himself, hoping to get the right one. Since the last potion he tested, some years ago, he never goes out of his office and he does not let anyone in but Sid.

She was born in a middle-class family, she was obliged to behave like a lady, she had a marriage of convenience with a very rich businessman who underestimated her. She is the worst and the most terrible woman of all Steelbridge. She hates the whole world in general, and all men in particular. She poisoned her husband and had power over his business; the Steelbridge Distillery. She only permits the entrance to her distillery to women with the exception of Sid.

He self-declared the governor of Steelbridge. When he was young he worked at the building of the bridge which names the city where he had the accident which cost him his right hand. He created a small steel industry to help with the construction of the bridge which got bigger along with the city that was growing more and more industrialized. He monopolized machinery sale based on steam energy and became the most influential man of Steelbridge. When he heard the news of a new technology development made by Izzy´s father, he could not be left indifferent.

Right now, we've built a prototype with a subset of the game functionality using an own engine and level editor. We have already had the first level made; “The Airships Guild” and the second level is at work. The rest of the Guilds are set out with design concepts. The combat is still far to be completed, but the very simple core is implemented and though it lacks of some variety, it has the potential to become a really great thing. If the campaign goes well, we will use Unity to develop the whole game in order to work faster. 

We think this game can be ready by some day in 2016 if this project gets funded. If not, this game will never happen. 

The game is intended to work with Windows, Mac and Linux.

We have been working part time so hard during a whole year and we have consolidated ourselves as a team. We have arrived at a point where additional financial help is needed to go on with the project but now full time. We believe Kickstarter is the ideal platform to support us, because it offers us the opportunity of being known and the highest freedom to develop the game the way we wish, without imposed restrictions from the outside.

In conclusion, we need you to build Steelbridge and its guilds. Without you, without your help, this project will never see the light.

He loved video games since he was a kid and played them in his brother’s computer. He also liked doodling on almost every page of his school books, making caricatures and drawing comic strips. Drawing and playing video games were both part of his life, and now they are more than ever working at Indie4Fun. He has a Fine Arts degree but he keeps improving his skills and learning everyday, especially making backgrounds and concept art for Izzy’s Revenge.

María Ramirez
Animator, Illustrator 

María Ramirez loves drawing strong cool girl characters. That’s why we wanted her to create Izzy, the main character of our game. She loves Miyazaki’s movies and she watches them many times every year -one of her favorite character is Mononoke, but she also likes Calcifer from Howl’s Moving Castle-. Video games are also part of her life: Portal, Bioshock, Left 4 Dead and Ragnarok Online are examples of games she really enjoys.

Guillermo Ferrando
Level designer, programmer

He wanted to work in video games since the first day he played Super Mario Land in a borrowed Game Boy Pocket. When he was five he started to design some naive games and at the age of seventeen he discovered he would never learn how to make good video games unless he started to make one, so he began in a small group learning dispersed things until he found this team, indie4fun, and started to learn real things and making real games while studying a Computer Science degree. He has also worked as a tester in the game Gods Will Be Watching by Deconstructeam and participated in a couple of game jams.

Néstor Ferrando 
Lead Programmer

After working several years as a researcher in the field of computational chemistry, he decided to move on to the videogames industry. Now in the mornings he works in a videogame studio while at nights he programs shiny indie stuff.

Fan of the clean code, refactor and pull requests, he has extensive knowledge of many languages such as Java, C#, C or ActionScript 3.

Sergio works with us as a consultant, giving us some advice in several fields like game design, funding and publishing.

Alejandro Ribes Hankins. Graduated in Media and Communications. Music and sound designer in video games and media contents.

We've been working with Álex on the music of the trailer and he'll be in charge of composing the soundtrack of the entire game if we reach our goal.

Risks and challenges

In spite of having a playable prototype and a clear target, developing a video-game involves a huge amount of work. We have ahead a long way to go. We have been able to work as a team, as well as putting up with some intense and stress moments and hard work.

We are aware that the key lies on the persistence and a proper work management. Along the last months we have been applied agile development methodologies which help us to focus towards the real important targets. Even so, because of the demanding visual finishing, we know we can be behind time in some delivery dates. Anyway, we prefer a well-polished product than fulfilling the delivery date at all costs.

We have support from the illustrators and indie developers of our environment, who are an inestimable help.
