“Isn’t it imperative/ to cross the sea/ to cross the street/ this time around/ to go straight to the wound/ and do not touch” —from the libretto of mayday heyday parfait by Robert Kocik

The Commons Choir’s latest work, mayday heyday parfait, sets humanity’s troubles and highest aspirations to song, dance, and poetry, exploring the human capacity for empathy across the elements that divide us in life. A diverse cast of 30 performers weaves a multi-layered narrative of complex musical harmonies and highly personal movements—everything from the violence of history, which has brought us to our current moment, to a way forward where individuals can follow their own paths and yet still feel their connection to others. Like the title whimsically indicates, mayday (a distress signal, call for help) heyday (a period of great success) parfait (French: perfect; layered concoction) shows how our stories and our histories are irreducible and interdependent, and that our collective force may be strong if we can find a way to undiscover ourselves and meet once again.

Risks and challenges

For this project, we are hoping to raise $10,000 to help pay and support the cast and crew of mayday heyday parfait, with a minimum goal of $6,000. We are grateful for the support of partners and funders who have already institutionally contributed to this campaign, including BRIC Arts Media, Gibney Dance, Exploring the Metropolis Inc, Brooklyn Studios for Dance, New Music USA, New York Foundation for the Arts, and New York State Council for the Arts.

Since The Commons Choir is composed of a massive team of performers, artists, and collaborators—more than 40 people in total—it can often be difficult to ensure that every member of our team is supported financially and artistically, especially amidst our current political climate, but we are dedicated to ensuring that these goals are met through honest, grassroots fundraising and devoting our utmost energy to making the best work of art we can create collaboratively.
