Break North is a project started by a couple of friends who met in college in Portland, Oregon. We've since grown a bit older and wiser, and a little bit pickier about the clothes we wear.
We'd been searching for a stylish hat made of nice material with solid details and minimal branding. We couldn't find one, and that's what led us here.
What We Care About
Lasting Durability. We're willing to pay for nice clothes that are made well and last. Bonus points if they look better with age.
Good Work for a Living Wage. We want to feel good about what we wear and where it came from. Our fabric is handwoven at homes in the Outer Hebrides of Northern Scotland, and our hats are manufactured right here in the USA.
Looking Good. We want our clothes to bring out the best in you without stealing the show.
What We Need Backing For
The fabrics we've chosen to use are special artisanal tweeds that are made to order. And you can't just order a few yards. We need your help to order the exact fabric that we've selected. In the process, supporting a tradition of high-quality textile manufacturing in Scotland.
Likewise, in order for these hats in the United States affordably, we need to meet certain minimums in our hat production run.
Finally, organizing fulfillment costs money. And your support will help us get these hats to the people.
More About the Fabric
This run of hats is made from Harris Tweed, a luxury wool tweed from the Outer Hebrides (pronounced Heh-Burr-Dees) in Scotland. The Harris Tweed Act of 1993 defines Harris Tweed as, “Handwoven by the islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.”
What we love most about these handmade fabrics are their rich colors. The darker blue is flecked with hints of red and gold; the light pink sparkles with yellows and purples; and you'll find traces of brown and gray in the pale eggshell blue.
At our basic funding level, these three colors are available in three different colorways.
Once we reach our initial goal, we are looking to add two more colors in two more colorways.
Goal #1 $6,500
Goal #2 $7,500
If we reach our second stretch goal, we'll switch up the colorways and add solid brown with baby blue or pink on the underbill.
We've also designed T-Shirts made of organic bamboo and cotton that are made in the United States. Just like our hats, we looked at a bunch of different options on these shirts and decided that these are our favorite by far. They have a stealth logo which is basically just clear ink with a tiny bit of white mixed in. The logo is there, but it's not in your face.
You'll be happy you did. These hats are awesome and they're just the beginning.
On board? Want to help more?
If you've backed us and want to continue to support us, we'd love it if you helped us spread the word. Email, Facebook, Twitter - whatever's clever.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge that we face with this Kickstarter is the possibility of delays.
The Harris Tweed mill we are working with is an artisanal mill that can only produce so much fabric at a time and we are making a special order. We don't have any control over how fast it can be produce, though we have an estimate.
Additionally, our hat manufacturer can only produce so many hats each week. Again, depending on the success of the Kickstarter, it may take them several weeks to get through all of the orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
