Hello, world! My name is Jared, I'm a freelance illustrator and caricature artist, and this year I made a card game. Sutures started out as a silly idea on slips of paper that I played with my friends when a D&D session fell through (which was every week). My friends really liked it, and pressured me to put some art to it, so I did. And then they showed their friends, and things kind of snowballed and here I am.
I've really enjoyed working on Sutures, and I'd love to expand it and make it even more unique and special. Unfortunately, I've sunk all my available time and funds into the few prototype decks I have floating around with the friends who've helped me test the game.
I've turned to Kickstarter to fund the production of my game, to raise interest and share my work with the world.
I have some sweet swag to entice you to support my game, check it out:
at 10$, I'll send you a black and white, printable, do-it-yourself copy of the game. Think of it as a sort of "try it before you buy it" kind of thing. Also, for higher tiers, you'll be able to use this to check out the game while you wait for your copy to be printed and shipped.
at 20$, you'll receive a copy of the game. This version is a single deck, but please note it takes two decks to play. You can always use the black and white deck to give your opponent. Also included are six Kickstarter exclusive cards that won't be printed again.
at 30$, you'll receive a duel set of the game. This box comes with two decks so that you'll always be ready to break it out and play it.
at 40$, I'll draw an original, one of a kind artist trading card and send it with your game. For this Kickstarter, I'm going to stick with the theme and draw monsters. Each card is numbered and signed.
at 50$, you'll also get a sweet 11 x 17 Sutures poster.
at 100$ things get super special. I'll replace the player avatar card with a likeness of you as a mad scientist. I'll even theme your character after your favorite monster type in the game - Draconian, Leviathan, Undead, Alchemy, Eldritch, Demonic or Mecha. For some examples, check these out:
How sweet would it be to play a game with an avatar based on you? PRETTY SWEET, RIGHT? This tier will also come in a super sweet alternate box design, Kickstarter exclusive.
Finally, at a very generous 500$, not only will you get a character card designed in your likeness, but your character will become central in the "story" of my game. I will retroactively add your character to the box art - not just your box, but EVERY box - and feature a short story about how evil and mad and sciencey your character is in the manual for the game. Every expansion that gets printed will also feature your character in some fashion, continuing their exploits and adding life to the game!
As my game developed and grew, I really wanted to create expansion decks to Sutures to make the game more varied, interesting and competitive. This is the whole reason for the Kickstarter - meeting my goal will be a cool story, but exceeding my goal will help me push forward and grow my game into something really special.
For every 1000$ I raise beyond my goal, I'll be able to put the time and energy into creating an expansion deck for Sutures themed after one of the monster types in the game. These decks will allow players to customize their core deck with themed parts that cater to different play styles and strategies.
At 2000$, I will create a Draconian deck, full of fire-breathing reptilian monsters that will stack damage and hit your opponents hard.
At 3000$, I will create a Leviathan deck, full of huge deep-sea monsters that boast even huger life totals that can withstand any assault.
At 4000$, I will create an Undead deck, which includes rotten horrors that keep coming back from the discard pile.
At 5000$, I will create an Eldritch deck, stocked with nightmarish creatures that manipulate the rules of the game and bend your opponent - and maybe even you yourself - to their will.
At 6000$, I will create an Alchemy deck, full of abominations of science and nature that can manipulate their stats and regenerate lost health.
At 7000$, I will create a Demonic deck, so that you can contract those-of-which-we-do-not-utter-peeps to restrict your opponent's gameplay options, but beware, demons often come with a heavy price!
At 8000$, I will create a Mecha deck, with mechanical wonders that can transform and change out their parts on the fly, always becoming bigger and badder. This deck will focus on searching and stacking the decks in your - or against your opponent's - favor.
These goals sound lofty, but I believe it's entirely possible to reach them. In fact, if this project totally blows me away and I raise 9001$ (which will allow me to use dated Vegeta memes to describe my success in a professional setting) I will create a BRAND NEW, MYSTERY monster type, complete with its own deck!

Risks and challenges
This is the exciting part of my project: it's very low-risk. The core game is finished, and with the exception of the custom artwork involved in the higher reward tiers, it's good to go. Barring a delay in printing or shipping the game, all backers should have their rewards on or before the estimated time frame. I am using funding to expand my game, to make it bigger and better and exponentially more awesome, and that does have challenges.
Sutures came about largely through a perfect cocktail of creative energy and scarce employment. I started work on it in October of last year, started illustrating cards in January, and had my first prototype deck at the beginning of March. Estimating that it might take me the same 5-6 months to create each new 60 card expansion deck, and if I reach all of my stretch goals and work on Sutures non-stop, it could take FOUR YEARS for me to complete my game with all of its expansions. Eight expansions in four years sounds pretty reasonable, but it's also plenty of time for things to go wrong. All I can offer is assurance that Sutures is my pride and joy and I will make it as big and cool as backers want me to.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
