About this project
What Is The Handleband
Our phones help us navigate and train. They're our cameras, our lights, and our emergency link home. So why don't we use them with our bikes?
The Handleband is a simple tool that uses the untapped power of our smartphones. It is an elegant and universal means of uniting your smartphone with your bicycle.
The Handleband was designed to be wonderfully simple and incredibly robust. It is made from high-strength silicone and reinforced with a 7075 Aluminum spline. It wraps once around a bike's handlebars, then again around a smartphone to create a tremendously secure connection. The wrap-around tail is reinforced with 40% more material in at the points where it hooks to the aluminum spline. It is also rated for 70% more elongation than the Handleband requires. It is designed to last.
Thanks to the natural flexibility of the silicone bands, this double-wrap system enables the Handleband to work effectively with any smartphone, any case, and any bicycle. It can also be used with other devices, like flashlights and pumps, and can be mounted to other tubes - like your stem and seat post.
If you want to attach your band to your bars permanently, just slip a zip tie through the two slots on the front of the Handelband. They're inset perfectly to create a smooth surface for your smartphone. If you own a thicker case, use the extended slot to increase the length of the tail. The device is completely adaptable.
Oh, and it's also a bottle opener.
The Handleband may be a beautifully simple product, but the processes that make it are much more complex. We'll be using two primary manufacturing methods - compression molding to produce the silicone body and aluminum extrusion to create the inserts. Each of these processes cost several thousand dollars for tooling alone. Kickstarter will enable us to cover the fixed costs needed to make this a reality.
How You Can Help
First, we need to raise enough funds to make this happen. If you would like a Handleband or have a friend that might like one, please back us!
Second, we need help getting the word out. If there are blogs that you frequent of friends you know that would like the project please pass the campaign (http://kck.st/12hOqUk) along to them. Emails, tweets, facebook posts. It all helps!
The Design Process

The Handleband is not my first Kickstarter campaign, so I know what it takes to make these projects succeed. Launching the WINGStand on Kickstarter in 2011 taught me what it takes to design a product, launch it, and most importantly fulfill that product to backers. To learn about the previous product, visit www.wingstand.com.
What else could you call it (a.k.a. keywords to find the campaign): bike phone holder, phone carrier, bike mount for smartphones, handle band, handle, phone mount, creativity, ingenuity, success!
Risks and challenges
Learning from previous projects, I know what it takes to make a product like this. Tooling, production, and fulfillment are all lined up, so now we only need deposits in order to start manufacturing. That said, things dont always go as expected, and delays sometimes occur. For this reason, we've built in a buffer period into our delivery expectations. More importantly, we've created a very clear schedule so if things do pop up, you'll be the first to know. We're all in this together. I want to make sure you're well informed as things progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Handleband has two strap options to accommodate different cases of different sizes. It should work with any iPhone, any Android, and any case (with the exception of galaxy S3 cases - they're just a little too big.)
We have tested the Handleband on mountain biking trips, conducted shake tests, and built specialized equipment to ensure it holds your device snugly. It is very, very secure.
Kickstarter doesn't let us include multiples of a product in a given reward tier. If you want multiple Handlebands, pledge the amount required for a given tier then multiply it by the number of units you'd like. For instance if you'd like three Handlebands, pledge $75 at the $25-Handleband Tier. We'll double check with you when the campaign ends, and get you your three (or however many), well deserved Handlebands you requested.
Yes, any iPhone and any Android phone.
The Handleband itself is made from high grade silicone and is absolutely waterproof. If you're worried about your phone, the Handleband accommodates a variety of waterproof cases including the Lifeproof Case and Otterbox Armor Case. Rest at ease, your phone will be totally safe.
Most thefts occur ad-hoc, when someone see's something they want and decides on the spot to take it. The Handleband is removable, but can also be permanently secured to your handlebars using two zip-ties. Slots on the front of the piece are designed specifically for this purpose.
The internal spline that reinforces the Handleband doubles as a bottle opener. It is seamlessly integrated into the product to produce a delightfully useful piece.
The Handleband attaches to any cylindrical surface 1-1.5" in diameter. This makes it incredibly useful in a whole range of situations. It can be connected to the handles of a motorbike or a scooter. It can connect to the rails on a boat, or the tubes of a stroller.
But it also does much more than hold a phone. Film makers have asked us to use it to hold mics on film sets, and DIY photographers have sought it out as a tripod mount. Plus, it will always be a wonderful bottle opener.
We're currently focusing on the Kickstarter campaign and ramping up production. If you're interested in distributing the product once we launch, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll notify you once we start shipping.
Every time we switch out colors, we have to pay to have our manufacturer re-tool the machine. This can be very costly, especially if we're producing many different variations of the Handleband. That said, if we raise $75,000, we'll be able to produce the Handleband in 7 beautiful colors. Which color to use will be up to our backers to decide.
