Dear Friends ~ This is my first Kickstarter project, and I’m seeking your support to help me produce two CD recordings: the music of the Lerner & Loewe classic My Fair Lady for solo electric archtop guitar, and a collection of Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holiday favorites for solo acoustic guitar. I will start work on the Holiday project in early October, and will finish production on that by early December – just in time for the Holidays! The My Fair Lady sessions will start in early January, and the project is currently scheduled for an early Spring release date. Please click on the audio links above to hear rough samples of "Go Tell It On the Mountain" and "The Holly & The Ivy". Video of "My Fair Lady" excerpts coming soon!
I am planning on recording both projects with John McVey at Coupe Studios in Boulder, which has an amazing selection of vintage microphones, outboard gear, etc. John is an amazing engineer/producer/musician, and I’m very excited to be working with him on these projects!
I have wanted to record a Holiday project for several years now. Eventually I decided that the intimacy and organic sound of the acoustic guitar would be perfectly suited for new arrangements of Holiday classics. The project – title TBD, but I’m thinking Thanksgiving, and Christmas Tidings – will feature beloved sacred and popular tunes set in alternate tunings, jazz/contemporary arrangements, and featuring extended techniques in different styles.
I have also loved the music from the Lerner & Loewe masterpiece, My Fair Lady, and have been particularly influenced by the recordings of Oscar Peterson and Shelly Manne (featuring Andre Previn). The music on this recording will include solo electric guitar arrangements of “On the Street Where You Live”, “Get Me to the Church On Time”, and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face”, and several others. Both projects will be recorded on custom acoustic and archtop guitars crafted by Brad Nickerson of Nickerson Guitars.
Both projects will feature original artwork, prints, and woodcuts by Andrea Antognoni. Creating a work of art that is visually beautiful is very important to me, as is the sound quality. I have worked hard on my previous CDs to obtain a clear, audiophile quality sound that lovers of hi-fidelity music will hopefully cherish. No compression is used, in an attempt to capture the true dynamic range that is inherently a part of great jazz and classical recordings. This is why I believe it is essential to utilize world-class audio gear and work with John McVey, an award-winning musician with golden ears!
The reward packages include these two CD projects augmented with choices from my previous critically acclaimed solo guitar CDs, Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Essentials book, and pdf collections of guitar transcriptions, plus live/Skype lessons. I am expecting to complete the Holiday recording by early December (obviously in time for Christmas gifting and listening!); the My Fair Lady in Spring, and the other gifts (books/CDs/transcriptions) can be shipped at any time.
Your generous contributions will help me meet the costs of recording, mixing, mastering, artwork/design, CD replication, and taxes/copyright fees/miscellaneous expenses. I hope that you will be a part of these creative projects!
Sincerely yours ~ Sean
Risks and challenges
The Kickstarter platform is unique in that it is all or nothing. That means if artists do not raise the minimum amount, they receive nothing. On the other hand, they are not limited to that maximum amount! I need your help to meet the minimum and more to complete these projects in the best and most timely manner possible. If the minimum is not met, no fees or charges will be incurred.
The risks and challenges are, generally speaking, upon the artist, who must also have faiththe minimum project fundraising goal will be met! But I believe in the quality, rewards, and enjoyment of these two projects, and Kickstarter has been very successful with essentially setting up a system for 'pre-sales & support' in the modern music era. I see both of these projects as natural follow-ups to my three previous, critically acclaimed CD recordings of fingerstyle acoustic and jazz guitar music.
I'm looking forward to touring next Spring 2015, and can't wait to share the music with you in a live concert setting!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
