UPDATE [NEW GOAL: $5,500] We did it!! Thanks to all of you, we've reached our goal of $4,000. We honestly cannot thank you enough. This album is really going to happen now! But the time isn't up, and we're not done. Every dollar we raise after this can go to making the album the absolute best it can be: more instruments, more time spent mixing to get it right, more publicity for the music video, etc. We're shooting for $5,500 now, and we think we can make it. If we do, everyone who participated will get a special little present in the mail from Distoria, in addition to whatever they get at their backer level. So don't stop sharing the project, and definitely don't stop believing!
So this is exciting. My band Distoria is gearing up to record our first EP! This is music I've been writing and refining forever (some of it since I was a teenager), and we've been working on it as a band for about two years. We make electronics-driven piano pop rock. And it's awesome.
If you don't know, my name is Helena Martin. I play piano and write wordy, complex rock songs. I also do technology consulting for small businesses and have an unnatural love for interesting pajama pants. My bandmates Tim Lykins (drums, electronics) and Mor Mezrich (bass, electronics) help me take my songs and make them infinitely more interesting, accessible, and rockin'. And intentionally irritate me a lot. And let me take silly pictures of them somewhat frequently. Such as:
It'll be a 4-song EP (with one or two special extra tracks, too). We've got it all planned out. We'll be tracking at Flux Studios in lower Manhattan, mixing at Ears and Gears Recording in Astoria, and mastering at one of two mastering studios we're close with. We've also got a music PR company to help us do a 6-month national press push so we can, ultimately, get ourselves a booking label and maybe even a publishing deal.
All this stuff takes money -- more than you'd even think -- so here's the breakdown (estimates, but very accurate ones).
PR campaign: $2,500
These prices are after cashing in on ALL our outstanding favors and getting some work done for free or very discounted. You might have noticed that we're already at $5,425 here, and we haven't even included the music video or merchandise or CD printing or paying photographers or artists or Kickstarter/Amazon fees yet.
So why is our threshold so much lower?
Because a) we don't want to ask for too much from you, our fans and friends, and b) if we don't reach our minimum, we don't get any money and the project is off and then you won't get your awesome rewards that I know you want so much.
But this EP is necessary to take us to the next level. I can't wait to get these tracks down in the studio because I am so proud of the work we've done to create this music, and I so badly want to share it with everyone!
So what do you say? Will you be a part of this journey? Will you ask one or two friends to join you, as well? We've got some great rewards for very reasonable amounts of money, and every tiny bit you can give us is seriously appreciated by all of us.
Thanks for taking out the time to check out our project. And while you're here, look at some of the other cool Kickstarter projects going on right now! You'll notice I've backed almost 20 other projects in the past few years; artists and appreciators of art have a responsibility to one another to support good projects. Support art in your community! When you do, we all win.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will be not losing momentum after we've released the album. But completing this project is not the end of the journey; it's the beginning of it. We are going to continue to set clear-cut goals with timelines for Distoria to make sure we don't get stuck in the post-release rut.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
