When the doors you keep trying to go through don’t open you regroup and look for other doors that will. That is exactly what Ken is doing with this Kickstarter campaign for his latest album, Civil War. As Ken can attest to, any journey in the music industry is one of highs and lows, of big and little successes and obstacles in many forms, sometimes even his own inner voice. Thankfully for those who are inspired by Ken and his music, his tenacious, passionate fortitude overcomes.
In today’s music world, more than ever before, the balance of power rests more in the hands of music lovers and not solely in those of major record labels and radio & media conglomerates. The digital age affords the music makers, like Ken Stead, the ability to distribute directly to listeners and music appreciators. That is what Ken needs your help with, to partner with him in distributing and promoting “Civil War” the album.
Below you will read about Ken’s many successes in the music industry. You will read about his career highlights and the many stages he has played on. While that is all fantastic what it doesn’t tell is who Ken is as a human. He is just like us really. Ken is a deep thinker, yet a total goof. He is animal lover, especially his cat. He can get along with big tropical bugs as long as he can research what they are and they don’t sneak up on him. Ken is always up for an adventure and can make a complete stranger feel like an old friend. Ken is a let’s get real here kinda guy who doesn’t expect you to take him too seriously because he does that too often himself. Ken loves people and learning their stories where ever they are in the world or in their life. He is brave enough to keep going, humble enough to own his mistakes and forgive you yours. Ken also loves beer and hockey after all he is Canadian.
Ken Stead has been playing music professionally since 2013. He has independently released two albums since then (Unfinished, and Fear Has No Place Here) garnering him chart placements on the Canadian Folk/Roots chart. His career has had some incredible highlights such as opening for Burton Cummings, Tom Cochrane and Sass Jordan. Ken has played numerous Canadian festivals including Edmonton Folk Fest, Canmore Folk Fest, Big Valley Jamboree (main stage), Breakout West, Folk Alliance International and many others.
In 2017 Ken was invited to take part in a commercial country radio contest and began to really develop his sound by adding his own band for the contest. Ken and his band won third place in the contest and was rewarded money to be able to record the album.
Civil War is about the battles within. Ken has most definitely experienced battles within the content of the album, as well as getting this album into the public's ears. After finishing the recording, with producer Winston Hauschild (Hey Ocean, Hannah Georgas, Mike Edel, Wanting) this record went to Canadian legend Howie Beck (Barenaked Ladies, Feist, Arkells, Walk Off The Earth) for mixing.
The record was completed in March 2018 and since then Ken has been working on the marketing and distribution aspects of this record. Fighting to open doors and find and make new ones even though he wasn’t able to receive grant money from Canadian organizations. Ken has fought and worked very hard to put together a team and a solid release plan for the album “Civil War” and for his career growth both in Canada and internationally.

If there is anything I’ve learned by making music for a living, it is that I can only do what I’m doing because of the support of people that believe in what I’m doing. It really comes down to the people that follow my music, the people that come to shows, the people that purchase the music, the people that encourage along the way, the people check in to see how I’m doing mid winter, the people that sing along to the music. This is why we chose Kickstarter because I want to be able to give you something back. I want you to be able to hear the music first. When I started to look at what the international potential of this record was I didn’t know that it had as much potential as what radio distributors believed it did. I knew this was something that with the help of other people, we could really take huge strides forward towards international success.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for believing in me and supporting the campaign. It is why I will be handwriting out as many thank you notes as there are supporters. I appreciate you more than I can express in words. Lots of love your way and keep fighting the good kind of civil wars so that we can make this world a better place.
