At last a book that takes a new approach to teaching knitting that doesn't assume you know more than you might. A totally new approach.

Over the last few months, almost as if through a will of its own, Knitting Untangled has evolved and changed. Initially I envisioned this as a traditionally published/printed book. But the universe seems to have had another vision that I am only beginning to discover. This is how I described the project last year:

--------------

Learning to knit doesn't have to be difficult.

I used to own a yarn shop and I loved helping people — figure out a pattern, or help fix a mistake — much more than I liked "selling." I especially loved helping people learn to knit. Over the years I found that many of the "Learn to Knit" books out there were difficult to understand. They covered the basics of knitting, but used knitting terms and language familiar only to people who know how to knit. My customers would often come to me, with the book in their hands asking, "What does this mean?"

Knitting Untangled (a working title) is a comprehensive Learn to Knit book that teaches the beginning knitter all the skills needed to knit simple and seemingly complicated projects. The tone is familiar and friendly and breaks down established knitting language into something anyone can understand.

The book contains 10 patterns (including hats, scarves, a cowl, a blanket and sweaters for baby, children, men and women) that are beautiful but simple enough for the beginning knitter to accomplish. And is peppered with tips and techniques that I have learned in my 30 plus year fascination with the craft.

I have already received material support from many wonderful yarn companies like Classic Elite, Westminster Fibers, Quince & Co, MadelineTosh, and Swans Island who  expressed their belief in me by most generously donating the yarn I used to knit the designs in the book. The next and final step is the printing. This is where Kickstarter comes in. I know that I could have pitched this idea to a publisher. But I didn't want my voice "toned down" or compromised in some way — or to have to fall back to the established knitting language in order to save space or follow any of their rules. Being self published takes a lot of hard work, dedication, endurance...and cash.

----------------

Only now the vision is not to have the book printed (at least initially) but to be created as a eBook, a digital version that can be viewed on a computer or eBook reader (like the iPad, Kindle, etc). A book that doesn't have to be constrained, not just by a publisher's view...but even by the limitations of traditional printing. I LOVE the idea of an eBook — think of it...no paper, no ink, no fuel used to ship...plus I can take advantage of many of the emerging technologies to really make this a fun project.

Monies raised through Kickstarter will be used to purchase software (Adobe Creative Suite) and hardware with enough memory to create this book.

Contributors at every level will receive (what I hope people will consider)  thoughtful gifts as a way to say, "Thank you" for helping to fund this project and will get a special "Thank You" page in the book. And the craft gets a boost with what I am hoping will be the next "go to" "learn how" book for the local yarn shop. Nothing keeps the industry going like new blood and future customers.

As with all Kickstarter projects, the budget must be met by 100% if the funding is to go forward. I would be so grateful if you could please pass this along to anyone you think might be interested.

Thanks, and let's get this book produced!

Best stitches,

Sean
