This project seeks to produce a series about Salahadin (Saladin), the 12th century Muslim leader who won back Jerusalem from the Crusaders. The story of Salahadin is an epic tale that has been told many times in the past, but our vision is exceptionally different from any other before.
First, unlike most projects before, our aim is to produce an entertaining and informative series that focuses on historical accuracy, in order to shed light on the cultural and religious aspects of the Middle East.
Second, although most stories portray Salahadin’s latter days, during his encounter with the Crusaders, our project will initially center on his early days, in detail, as he began his journey and rose to power as “the most chivalrous man in history.” The Middle East has been experiencing a period of division and sectarianism, a problem not unique to our time, and we believe that we can learn through history and especially through the story of Salahadin. This timely tale will offer both people residing in the Muslim world, as well as those in the West a better understanding of various representations of Islam, in particular its plurality, as well as its historical tradition. Bridging these differences can be done usefully through the medium of entertainment, a language everyone speaks, that pervades cultures and societies.
We MUST RAISE at least $80,000 in order to produce the pilot episode. Thanks to generous donors as well as our own personal investments we have so far raised a few thousand dollars that were spent on the production of the trailer. Our expenses included purchasing props, custom-made Middle Eastern clothing, set design, camera and lighting, and online social media expenses. This project has been a 100% volunteer based effort led by passionate college students, but we need your support, financial or otherwise, to keep it alive. Spread the message and check out our donation page to help, and most of all, check out the trailer! Thank you!
Expected Release: August 2014
Risks and challenges
The first challenge is finding the right location. There are several locations to choose from all around the world. It would be cost effective to travel to a desert within the United States, however, there is little access to Middle Eastern props and costumes. Our clothing for the trailer was custom made. We made the design and purchased the clothing for a local member of the community to make. We made a dozen outfits for $500. The rest of the props ( bow and arrows, gauntlets, etc.) were also difficult to find and so we had to make some of those ourselves. Props and clothing are so crucial, especially to a project like this where a certain culture and time period must be displayed. It can be quite costly.
We prefer to travel to OMAN and/or Dubai and film there since both locations have ideal environments (deserts, mountains, rivers, beaches, oceans, tents, forts and small castles). Both are Arab states and so access to Middle Eastern clothing and props are much more accessible and cheaper. We have family and friends there and so lodging expenses would be little to none.
We are leaning more towards filming the majority of the pilot in the Middle East for now, however, it is dependent on how much we can raise.
Casting might also be tough since we have characters with very unique personalities. We will need to be thorough with our casting in order to get it just right with our actors/actresses.
There are a number of issues that can arise during production and post-production in any film project, however, we are determined to work through them as we have thus far and make this happen. We have the talent, the commitment, and the experience to really create something special.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
