About this project
Driftwood is a celebration of what is possible in a vegan world. It’s a place to see other vegans and celebrate our world with and through each other. Every issue will be filled with stories of vegan travel adventures, profiles on people, the arts, and advancements and issues in the global vegan community.
Unlike most vegan magazines, Driftwood concentrates on people through culture and the arts. This is reflected in high-quality, visually stunning images. Our print publication is on quality paper, making Driftwood a collectible piece rather than a disposable magazine.
Our Vegan Faces portrait collection is the greatest testimony to our focus on the people and lives of the vegan movement. So far, we’ve published portraits of more than 100 vegans from 9 countries…including a vegan cat!
The Founders & Contributors
I’m Holly Feral, owner and EIC of Driftwood. My background is in journalism and photography. I started developing Driftwood in the summer of 2014 after I realized that my desire for a travel magazine was shared within the vegan community. We long to experience exotic destinations and hear stories of vegan life, heroes, antiheroes and, even villains. We want a sense of history and kinship in all corners of this planet that we love and fight for.
Several years ago, my life was changed forever by firsthand testimony from slaughterhouse workers in Gail Einitz’s Slaughterhouse. I was developing an idea for a travel magazine at the time. How do you proceed after taking the red pill? You're told you can't travel because other cultures have no place for vegans. I started looking to repopulate my world with vegan versions of the things I felt alienated from. I was looking for a sense of vegan history, of current vegan culture, and of a vegan future. What I mostly found were magazines whose focus is convincing people to become vegan by showing them recipes and lists of famous people. I found little to address the rest of life: the arts and culture that create community and make life about more than surviving.
Driftwood is an exploration into that dream. Once the idea was fully formed, I made a call out to vegan creatives who wanted to join me in making something stylish and lasting with a vegan ethic running beneath all things, tying it all together.
That’s where I come in. I’m Michele Truty, Managing Editor. When I saw that someone in Portland was creating a vegan travel and culture magazine, I thought, “I know how to do that—no, I have to do that.” A coffee meeting with Holly turned into a lunch meeting, and by the end of the day I was part of this amazing project.
I can geek out all day about publishing. I’m completely in love with the process of getting information from writers to their readers, fine-sanding those words and capturing images, then compressing them into this little handheld item in just such a way that they pop for the reader like an overstuffed suitcase. Being able to do this in a completely vegan environment is a treat.
This left one major piece of the puzzle, our Art Director.
I’m Jade Sturms, and I come to Driftwood with a background in print and web design. Reading magazines as a child had a major influence on me. The format of a magazine provides a unique opportunity for a sense of play and expression that is not as easily found in other mediums, and early exposure to expressive typography, illustration, and layout design in magazines played a huge role in leading me to design and artmaking. Driftwood is an opportunity to tailor these exciting visual experiences to the vegan community. It’s an outlet that will allow all forms of art to come together, from stories about people to comics, from poetry to beautiful photography.
Our travel features are written by an international team of both native and traveling vegans, sharing exotic adventures and practical tips, to show our readers how accessible vegan travel really is. We’ve been fortunate in that we’ve attracted such talented journalists, bloggers, photographers, artists, and activists who want to be part of Driftwood.

The Rewards/Subscription Drive
While our Kickstarter is primarily a subscription drive for the print and digital editions, we made some pretty cool stuff to sweeten the deal. Our journals, tshirts, and tote bags will be hand-printed, each with a unique design.
If you live outside the U.S., don't fret—we’ve added shipping options for other parts of the world (U.S. shipping is included). If you’re willing to help absorb the shipping fees, we’re willing to fill out the extra forms to get our magazine and rewards to you.
Distribution & Pricing
Driftwood will be independently distributed to select bookstores, newsstands, and vegan shops in North America, and via online retailers as well as our own website. Each issue will cost $15 for print, $5 for digital.
How the Money Will Be Used
Our goal amount will be used to cover the cost of printing and postage. Also, just as Driftwood seeks to uplift the vegan community through our content, we will also support the talented writers, photographers, and artists who create our content.
Other costs we’ll incur include web design/hosting, equipment/programs, and administrative services/supplies. And someday we’ll have an office.

Risks and challenges
Committing to a print edition is scary expensive, so it takes a good subscriber base to keep the print costs down. We knew another disposable, low-quality magazine just wouldn’t hack it, and we know Driftwood is going to be so lovely that people will want to hold it in their hands and keep it for years (or ever).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
