In today’s society we are faced with distractions around every corner. At work, home, school, and even in the car. The main distraction people encounter is caused by their cell phones. Yes, the modern conveniences that the cell phone brings are phenomenal, but they can also be deadly when placed in the wrong hands at the wrong time.
Since the introduction of text messaging and social media applications on mobile devices, accidents have increased at a rapid and monumental speed. Car companies increase technology every year to allow more functions of the cell phones to be used through the car, however these companies do not solve the biggest issue... To ensure that drivers do not have their cell phones in their hands while behind the wheel of their automobile. That's where Buoy comes in.

We plan to fulfill the product rewards directly from DNJ Innovations to our donors using 3-day delivery. We plan to continue our R&D if funded and to start production in the late winter of 2014. Our expected delivery of the rewards to our supporters is planned for March of 2015. We will be keeping our supporters informed of our progress through the various phases of our development and production. Delays, should they occur, would likely be due to supply chain lead times of the more unique components or unexpected challenges in rapid sudden increase of demand. However, we have great confidence in the substantial experience of our team.
Although laws have begun to progress recently by promoting drivers to not use their mobile devices while driving, the laws are not sufficient in solving this problem alone. The laws are designed to combat texting and driving, but the issue is much larger than just texting. Phones have immediate access to various applications from gaming and sports, to the most prevalent social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. These applications actually provide more distraction than just writing and sending a text.
Many companies are trying to solve this issue, but the main fault with their approach is taking complete functionality of the phone away from individuals while they drive. Drivers still need their cell phones to use GPS and in case of emergency. One of the main ideas on the market today involves downloading applications that will disable the function of a powered cell phone. However, with young adult drivers who want to disobey, these applications can easily be disabled or deleted from their phones. Also, the applications do not allow usage of the phone which can be important to a driver when in times of distress or emergency.
While Bluetooth gives the driver the choice of being ‘hands free’ it does not guarantee the driver will take advantage of the technology. The driver still has full access to their phones for texting, social media and the internet. When you pull up to a red light, you will see more than half of the cars drivers’ looking at their phones. Please help DNJ Innovations to solve this issue. For the past three years we have put an enormous amount of work into creating a functioning device and obtaining the utility patents needed to guarantee the quality of our product.
Ultimately, our goal is to have our patented device installed as a standard function in all cars built from this point forward. Our technology can be used in any make and model, new or used. Although our device is for any driver, the main demographic we are targeting is young adolescent teen drivers whose parents are worried about their safety. It is also a great addition for repeat offenders that admit they cannot escape their distracted phone behavior.
Our utility patent is set up to protect the technology we have created. The technology can be implemented in a newly manufactured or already functioning car using a built in docking station/docking area. Buoy uses a proximity pairing device to detect when a cell phone is in the car. Buoy then alerts the driver via an alarm as well as a flashing light to inform the driver their cell phone is not in the area designated for their cell phone.
The utility patent protects the sensory technology DNJ Innovations has created to detect a phone in the car, as well as detection of the phone in the docking area. Buoy is a device that is easily installed into your car that fulfills these functions. The alarm noise and flashing light are behavioral designs that are proven to promote drivers to wear a seat belt. The driver has the ability to refuse the use of a seat belt, but has to deal with the disturbance the car creates when ignored. With Buoy we are doing the same thing, but using it to encourage drivers to put their phones into the docking area.
In our studies, 9 out of 10 drivers who had an alarm sounding for their unused seat belt were likely to put their seat belt on within 20 seconds of turning the car on. So far in our studies using our prototypes, 8 out of 10 drivers would rather put their phone in the docking area versus driving with it in their hands. In a drive longer than 5 minutes, 10 out 10 drivers would at some point put their phones into the docking station during the drive.
Below is one of our working prototypes. The casing was created using a 3D printer. We plan to make each model sleek and appealing, as seen on the video.
We highly encourage comments and/or feedback for our idea. The more feedback we get the more we can ensure this is done at the highest caliber. The more funding, the more research and development we can do to improve the technology. Our ultimate stretch goal is for every car to have this technology built into it during manufacturing. If this idea becomes popular and has substantial funding, we will have the support to show the major car manufacturers the importance of Buoy in every automobile.
As Buoy evolves there will likely be adjustments made to improve the final product. Pre-production prototypes are made to test and refine the product. The testing allows us to incorporate our adjustments and those suggested by our experienced manufacturing partners. These will always be for the benefit of the consumer and we will keep you informed of why and how these changes are taking place.
By backing us, you will all be part of an updated email chain that will continue to inform our backers when updates are made. To minimize the possibility of manufacturing setbacks we will enter the manufacturing stage with at least one back-up supplier for each component pre-located, and our product commercialization experts will help ensure smooth transitions from our suppliers to factories. We will be working with manufacturers who have years of experience delivering excellent products in large quantities.
There will be some surprises along the road, but any obstacle will be addressed by combining our internal knowledge with external expertise. Risks and challenges
We have been working on Buoy for the last three years. In the beginning of 2013 we managed to create our first working prototype, and took another year to perfect it. We are now fine tuning our design for mass production. As part of our progress, we have assessed all the challenges and risks which are part of making such a complicated project. Some of the biggest risks are already behind us. We had to overcome a lot of challenges in order to get to where we are today. But still, there are some more challenges ahead.
The challenges we are facing now are the ones that are always part of the process of taking a working prototype into mass production. The design is highly innovative, we use unique production technology and the Bill of Material includes substantial number of unique and custom parts. With the support of Kickstarter and reaching our funding goals, we believe that we are able to minimize those risks in order to deliver Buoy to our backers with full satisfaction.
