With funding from this campaign my band and I will record, mix, and release our next album of new music.
Your donation will allow us to complete the recording process that has already begun. Basic tracks for 10 new songs were recorded in 2012 at NYHed studios in New York City. The songs were recorded live onto analog tape and transferred to a digital format.
Along with our personal hard-earned savings, the money we raise from this campaign will enable us to finish the process of overdubbing additional instruments, editing, mixing, and mastering the tracks. Finally, we will package the music with fancy artwork and make it available to the adoring public.
Subsequent concert settings will enable us to sell the finished album in person to fans and friends.
The previous album enlisted the talents of fine musicians. The current line-up, having played together solidly for over two years, is a whole other ballgame. The cohesion and camaraderie that develops over a period of time within a band cannot be overstated. My band, The Hostages, exhibits this sort of cohesion. We are tight. The next album has the potential to go gold … or at least platinum, or whatever.
Damon “Lightning” Smith on bass contributes background vocals and a finely-tuned intuitive musical sense honed from years of listening to country and prog rock as a youth in his home state of Texas.
Mike “Manhattan” Shapiro of Greenwich Village, New York on drums lends his masterful percussive chops developed from a half lifetime of professional engagements (ps: this guy even knows how to play jazz). He is currently pounding the skins in the Dusty Springfield Broadway musical …and his brother once met Hendrix.
Troy “Fingers” Fannin fresh off the proverbial Wisconsin farm, on guitar and keyboards, brings a "millennial generation" sensibility and mad skills both wielding the six string and tickling the ivories (ladies beware).
Marcellus Hall - that’s me – on guitar, harmonica, and leading vocals. ... [more info to come]
Additional musicians who have contributed to the recordings include Seth Paris on bass clarinet and Minji Park on geomungo. Yes, a geomungo! See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomungo
So, how the heck does Kickstarter work? For thirty days (and thirty days only) we'll be soliciting the help of generous people like you (who feel a need to be a part of something awesome). The goal is to raise $5000 which will cover the minimum in costs that we anticipate as we complete the recording of our album. Funding that extends beyond the stated goal will allow us to pay musicians, video makers, and/or publicists as we make the music available to a wider audience.
Remember: if we don't reach our goal, the project does not get funded. Every scrap counts.
If you can’t donate at this time it’s, like, totally cool. But it would be awesome if you could pass along this link and information to others who have deeper pockets. Sending good vibes is welcome too.
If you’ve ever asked yourself “Am I the kind of person to support the Arts?” … If you’ve ever been on the fence about donating and wondered whether it was within your ability to make this world a better place by giving a gift in support of the gift of music … If you’ve ever thought about contributing to a project but just couldn’t get yourself up from the couch … Now, my friend, is the time to act.
First Lady Michelle Obama, has expressed her support: “The arts and humanities define who we are as a people. That is their power -- to remind us of what we each have to offer, and what we all have in common. To help us understand our history and imagine our future. To give us hope in the moments of struggle and to bring us together when nothing else will.” (http://www.pcah.gov/)
Please find it within your heart to donate whatever amount of money is feasible for you at this time. Ten … twenty … fifty … even a single dollar brings us at least one dollar closer to our goal (minus the cut that kickstarter takes for itself).
You may be asking yourself “Why is this music relevant?” Just take a look at the song titles that are on deck for this album:
Soulmate – Who among us at one time or another has not spent a winter’s day gazing out of a bay window ensconced on a Crate & Barrel © throw pillow with a mug of hot cocoa and pondered the possibility of one day actually meeting his or her true soulmate instead of the fixer-upper boyfriend or girlfriend we are currently trapped with? You know who you are. This song will speak to you!
Still in Range – How many of you have wondered whether you’re still in range of dry land while navigating the vast oceanic seas of life? We’re willing to bet that most of you have.
Over You – A song about getting over a lost love. Need we say more? You know you’re not over it yet. And if you are, you might need to re-examine it.
High Road – A vindictive song about a total asshole. You either know him or you are him.
Floating – Have you ever felt like you’re, like, floating and not on solid ground when it comes to love? This song is for you.
False Move – How many of you haven’t at one time or another made a false move? Don’t deny it.
These are just a few of the nuggets of aural musicality that lie in store for those who are willing to offer a few dollars (or more) in support of this most worthy of projects. Among the other song titles are Rainfall & Laughter, Long Story Short, Over You (fast version), and Afterglow (slow version).
Some people will say that sardonic singer-songwritery music is so ten-years-ago. We couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’ve taken pains to infuse each and every song of ours with a healthy dose of pure and genuine heartfelt emotion. It might not be immediately apparent, but if you listen closely, you’ll hear it. No, you’ll actually feel it!
Not yet convinced? Consider the REWARDS! As an incentive for your generous generosity we are offering an array of special gifts. Among them is a signed copy of my new children's book Everyone Sleeps (Penguin 2013). See the trailer! See also the side bar on this page for other rewards.
Remember, every little bitty miniscule amount of cash will help. United we stand and divided we fail. Together we can motivate mountains. With the right attitude this album will come to see the light of fruition and you can be a part of it! There IS a light at the end of the funnel.
Remember how that guy felt who passed on the Beatles when they were starting out? You do not want to feel like him and neither do we.
It’s fast and easy. It’s like falling off a log. Please join us in making this reality a dream.

Risks and challenges
Barring acts of God the Almighty there are very few obstacles we can expect to stand in the way of our realizing this goal. When the project is fully funded we'll make every reasonable effort to deliver to our generous donors the promised rewards before their estimated delivery dates.
Part of the excitement for us in this project is the outreach that it entails. To make contact with people who are fans and who are willing to have a vested interest in the project is, if anything, inspiring. The energy and momentum are in place. With donations that amount to, in effect, pre-sales of the album, the band and I will be all the more impassioned as we record and mix songs that have evolved over the last two years in rehearsals and at live shows.
Having successfully written and recorded more than half a dozen full-length albums of original music, we have little doubt that this project will reach completion. The question is how many people are on board and would like to share in this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
