Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I raising The Big Bucks is such a short time? I have been a speaker and comic for 17 years but this is my 1st big push to get published. Since I’m a newbie I did not realized the huge opportunity of writer’s conference coming up 1 after another! If I miss this window of opportunity it doesn’t roll around for another year. That means I mail my book proposal packet out and it sits for months in a heap in an editors office growing cobwebs. At the expo in NY, LA and Dallas I’ll get incredible training plus meet editors and agents face to face to pitch my book. I’ve gotta raise big bucks fast. I had to register for all 3 events now to get personal interview times! Can you help me get there?Last updated:
When you are pitching a book to a publisher you don't actually send them a whole book. they get heaps and heaps of packets all the time and it takes months to get a reply. You send a proposal - It's a synopsis of the book, 3 sample chapters, authors bio and a 9 sentence hook. Believe it or not writing the condensed version is the hard part.Last updated:
I'm glad you asked. I must be prepared in a few sentence to explain my book in order to get an editor or agent to say "That sounds interesting. tell me more." I'm even preparing what's called an elevator pitch. It prepares me to be prepared in case i meet an editor in an elevator and only have 2 minutes. Of course knowing me I'd just hit the emergency spot button and trap them until the sign a contract.Last updated:
when you pledge to Kickstarter they do not process any of the donations until the deadline May 17. And only if I reach my goal. $8,000 YIKES!!!! IF I reach it they process it. If I don't reach the full amount then it cancels and is off.Last updated:

“Sticks & Stones…and Stupid Jerks” by Karin H Blythe
“How 1 short kid stands tall when they are mocked, bullied and badgered. Even though they’d rather drop out, drop dead or sock somebody.”
Prologue: Before our book begins I have to tell you a true story about my life as a little kid. It starts out pretty sad but I promise it gets better, okay? Now when you read the sad parts you might want to say, “ooooh” and give me a little sympathy. That would be great. And when you read the good parts you might want to clap and shout, “YAHOO!” That would be awesome too. I can use all the support I can get.
Here is the really sad part…. Ready?
By the time I was born something terrible was happening to my family. My dad had a mental illness, that means his brain got messed up, and he became very angry. He began to hurt our mom. He stopped working and paying bills. Our family of 6 lived in a motel room, one time we lived out of our car. At times we went hungry. His violence got worse and worse.
By now I hope you are saying “oooooh” and pulling for our family.
Here’s where the story get’s great….
Get ready to shout “Yahoooo!” Ready?
When I was 3 years old we were living in a cheap motel room in Tusla, OK. My dad lost control and really hurt our mom. She had been taking us to a little church across the street. My mom was so ashamed about the terrible situation we were in that she kept things a secret. But the people there could see that it was pretty awful. One night this little church, that hardly knew us, collected money called “a love offering” and gave it all to my mom. It was over $150.00. Back then that was like a thousand dollars. She was stunned.
Mom put some of our clothes in a laundry basket. She told our dad we were going to do laundry. When we all got in the car, she told us we were leaving for good. We knew Dad would be very angry; we were terrified. Mom drove us far away and we never looked back.
This is where you shout “Yahoooooo” or “Wooooohoooooo” or “yeeeeehaw!”
See? I told you this story was gonna get better. My mom is my hero because she took us to a new life that was safe and secure.
Let’s all give a shout to Mom…. “Yahoo! Way to go Mom! You rock!”
We drove 275 miles to Little Rock, AR, to be near my mom’s good family. Things were tough and our family was poor but that’s okay. We were on a new path. Our family consisted of 1 brave mom and 4 little girls. I am the baby of that family and proud of it.The story got even better when I was 6. I got the best Christmas present EVER! But there is not enough time to tell you that part now. You are going to have to trust me about that.
I thought you should know a bit of my true story before this book even begins. It’s not a sad book. It’s a story of victory! It’s a story of second chances. And aren’t those our favorite kind of stories?
This is the Back Story of Why I’m writing Monkey Brains BooksAs I mentioned earlier when I was 6 years old I got the ultimate Christmas present. It was a toy monkey and His name was Mr Bim. I loved him and carried him everywhere I went.
He was so cute wearing little tennis shoes and red suspenders holding a rubber banana in one hand and his fingers on the other hand would grip yours.
Mr Bim was my joy. We were very poor and didn’t have much to play with. He was my constant companion. One night after we came in for dinner I realized I had left Mr Bim outside on a playground.
My older sisters and I ran outside, but Mr Bim was gone. We looked everywhere, we asked neighbors, but no one knew where Mr Bim was.
My 6 year-old heart was broken that night because in a matter of minutes Mr Bim had been stolen.
Like I said we didn’t have much and what little I had was taken. He was my Christmas present. And I wasn’t going to get another one. I buried that hurt deep inside my 6 year old heart.
Out of the blue a few years ago I told this story to my husband, Jim, and just wept as I told it. Even though it was 43 years ago the hurt was still so fresh.
As a little girl in a very hard life with so little… somebody had steal my monkey!
It just seems like from a very young age I couldn’t catch a break. That’s why I wept as I told my Jim the story of my monkey being stolen. Plus I don’t think I had ever told anyone that before.
Well a few months after I told him about Mr Bim I got up one day very groggy & headed for the coffee. Guess who was sitting in my kitchen? Mr Bim!
He was holding a sign that said, “I’m home! I finally found you!”
I was in utter shock! It was like a CSI episode – it couldn’t have been more shocking if I had found a dead body in the floor. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move. I just stared at him. I couldn’t touch him. After 43 years Mr Bim came home. My shock turned to laughing and I held him like I was 6 years old.
We danced and sang “Reunited”Reunited and it feels so good ,Reunited 'cause we understood
There's one perfect fit and, sugar, this one is it
We both are so excited ’cause we're reunited, hey, hey
I called my mom and sisters to say “Guess what! Bim came home!”
Then I started weeping like I was 6 years old. I wept for days remembering how harsh those early years were. Then I started to chuckle to think of what adventures Mr Bim had had over the past 43 years trying to find me.
I started to take Mr Bim everywhere I went and people thought it was a little weird that a grown up had a toy monkey.
You might think it’s a bit weird but… I got my monkey back!
The truth was that my dear husband Jim was so touched by this deep hurt in my childhood that he made up his mind to try to heal my 6 year old heart
Jim began an internet search for toy monkeys, chimps, rubber banana, tennis shoes, suspenders, Mr Bim, and found a vintage Mr Bim in mint condition up for bid on E-Bay. He was sure when he saw that toy that no matter what the bid was that his wife was getting that toy!!!!!
This is the coolest gift I will ever be given because it took me back to the hardest time and healed a deep hurt of a little girl that just couldn’t catch a break.
At the age of 49 finally found my Perfect Life Mission. I began writing a series of children's book. It’s based on my childhood in the projects and my side kick Mr Bim. Books of laughter and wisdom for children in crisis- to teach skills to cope, overcome and find humor in hardship. The books are called Monkey Brains Books!
Since I have been a speaker and comic for the past 17 years this is a pretty perfect match of my gifts and training. Now…. To get published!
This is the BIG CLINCHER…..
Are you sitting down? I hope so. Take a deep breath and hold onto your hat.
Not long after I began writing this a friend, Sally, who is a published author contacted me and said she had been poking around on the Govt Trademark site and Guess what? The original trademark for Mr Bim toys from the late 1950’s was expired…. It was just sitting there….I could apply to own that trademark.
Long story short: I spent months and thousands of dollars and ….
Yes, my friends… I own the Mr Bim Trademark! That seriously changes the earning potential. Plus I get to re-launch a super star retro toy from the early 1960’s.
My prayer and passionate intention is to make a lot of $$ to fund projects for children in crisis globally and locally. Plus to give kids hope through humor & wisdom. I have been in public schools all over the country. Plus we are in partnership with schools in South Sudan, & Kenya.
I have found my Perfect Life Mission to write MONKEY BRAINS!·I I will take the greatest hurts of my life and share the answer for the hope that I have. I will share what I’ve learned to bring healing and hope to others
· I will use my unique gifts of humor to bring laughter to children.
The moral of this story is: NEVER STEAL A MONKEY from a feisty kid……
Thanks for reading, Karin Hudson Blythe
P.S Mr Bim is actually a chimp but please don’t say anything. He does not know that yet.
Shhhhh. He will deal with that later in a book about identity crisisLast updated:

Math Pop Quiz!!!!
Can you explain this? 421 people have "Liked" our Kickstarter site. I need $3,300 to reach our goal. If the people that "LIKED" it....really really liked it enough to pledge only $10. Where would that leave us?Last updated:
