About this project
Write More Letters Project Information:
Lyndsey and Herman share a great appreciation for letter writing. It’s hard to beat the childhood excitement of ripping open an envelope, the look and feel of a good sheet of stationery, and the sight of your besty's chicken scratch. Today, with correspondence only the flick of a finger away, it’s easy to forget how getting something special in the mail feels. Lyndsey and Herman hope to remind people of that feeling once again with their project Write More Letters. They hope to help bring back the lost art of letter writing by making it easy and special to both write a letter, and get a letter back in return. Each set of Write More Letters comes with two-way, letterpress printed stationery; a piece of parent stationery, as well as a nesting piece of stationery and matching envelopes. The nesting set is for you to self-address, and for your friend to send back to you with their handwritten reply.
A Little Bit of History:
Lyndsey earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Dayton and continued on to earn an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts. She packed up and moved to Seattle in the Summer of 2009 with her now husband and two hound dogs. She has been an active member in the arts community since her arrival, exhibiting work in local and national shows, collaborating with other artists, and volunteering as a Teaching Assistant at Pratt Fine Arts Center. She started Rose & June Press in the Summer of 2012, and named the studio after her grandmothers, who were both influential and inspiring to her creative pursuits. She has spent the last 16 months apprenticing with a Master Printer in a commercial letterpress shop to gain an in-depth understanding of age-old techniques and craftsmanship. She has an established customer base, but she has been using the equipment in her Mentor's shop. Lyndsey hopes to continue the beautiful history, craftsmanship and tradition of letterpress printing with her own shop.
Herman is an 8x10 Chandler & Price Letterpress, manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio in 1913. Chandler & Price was started in 1881 by Harrison T. Chandler and William H. Price. The company thrived until the advent of offset printing in the 1960’s and closed their doors in 1964. Lyndsey found Herman, rusty, stiff and busted in an antique store in Tacoma, Washington. It was love at first sight, she bought him that day, and with the help of a friend, loaded all 800 lbs of him into a rented trailer and hauled him home. Using reserves of elbow grease she never knew she had, Lyndsey spent 6 months refurbishing Herman to get him back in working order.
Herman and Lyndsey are ready to print, but they need your help getting all the tools and supplies needed to make this project on their own!

Risks and challenges
There are many factors involved in creating high quality letterpress prints. These factors vary from project to project and anytime you work with 100 year old equipment, inconsistencies and the occasional problem are bound to arise. Lyndsey’s training in college, graduate school and her apprenticeship with a Master Printer have prepared her for solving these challenges.
The greatest challenge with this project will be the amount of time it takes to print everything in order to reach our delivery goals. All of the designs and prototypes have been completed, which gives us a head start on production, and if we reach our funding goal, production will begin immediately. We will keep all of the backers updated throughout the process, and work very hard to reach our delivery goals. Each and every reward will be handmade, by Lyndsey and Herman, one at a time, with love.
