We did it!
Thank you to everyone who made this happen. It's still not late to support. You can buy Part one of E.X.O. (plus other merchandise) and/or preorder part 2 by following this link.
Hey, guys! My name is Roye and I’m the writer/creator of E.X.O. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been hooked on superheroes. And that’s why I dropped everything to start a company (YouNeek Studios) that revolves around creating them. But personally, it’s more than that. My goal is to create superhero stories based on diverse characters, from parts of the world that don’t get enough attention when it comes to said stories. Hence the birth of E.X.O., a superhero story about redemption set in a futuristic 2025 Africa (Nigeria to be specific). E.X.O. would be nothing without the fans. Last April, I ran a Kickstarter campaign for E.X.O. PART ONE, and it more than exceeded its goal ($3,500) by raising a whopping $10,000! And not only that, the buzz from the fans allowed me to get interviews with CNN, Forbes, BBC, Mashable, Huffington Post, and many more! These were things I could have never imagined in my wildest dreams. So, I’m hoping if you supported E.X.O. in the past I can count on you to join me for another journey, and if this is your first time hearing about it I hope I can get you to join this awesome ride. It’s time for us to make history… Once again!
The mission remains the same: To put Africa on the map when it comes to telling superhero stories. The plan is to tell these stories via comic books and graphic novels first, building a strong fan base and making as much noise with the books as possible. So much noise that distributors, investors and networks can’t help but work with us when the time comes to make E.X.O. into an animated movie/TV series. That would be so awesome wouldn’t it? Guess what? We are slowly making our way towards that goal! With the success of the first Kickstarter and the buzz from the first book, we’re finally building the foundations necessary to make a move towards an animated project (I will be sharing more details with backers on the animated project as this campaign progresses). But I still need your help. In any way you can, please support this Kickstarter (pledging financially, sharing, offering feedback etc.) so I can complete the first volume of the E.X.O. series (Part 1 and now Part 2)!
One thing I realized is that I also enjoy inspiring other people (and not just creators) to chase their own dreams as well. Because of that, I started to chronicle all I’ve learnt so far in creating E.X.O. Check out my blog to see how I have traced the creation of E.X.O. As an author, I believe in being completely transparent with my readers, so I share both my successes and my failures. It’s a great resource if you’re trying to chase your dreams too!
E.X.O. is a science fiction superhero story about redemption, set in a futuristic 2025 Africa! Part Two picks up where we left off in Part One! Part Two is 145 pages and we are about 75% complete on production! The release date is set for June 2016. If you haven’t read E.X.O. at all, you can read chapter one completely FREE here.
As with the last Kickstarter, I started this campaign because I'm on the last leg of an amazing journey. Production costs have already been taken care of and all that’s left is printing. The estimated cost for printing & shipping 1,500 books is about $5,000 (see "Where Does The Money Go" section below for more details). So, friends, family and superhero fans all over the world, I humbly ask you for your help in making my lifelong dream come true by guaranteeing that the E.X.O. story is completed!
Thank you all for your support!
Featured on CNN, Mashable, Forbes, and more, E.X.O. - The Legend of Wale Williams is a science fiction superhero story about redemption, set in a futuristic 2025 Africa. Part two continues to chronicle the journey of Wale Williams a.k.a EXO, who was last seen hanging on for dear life after his first encounter with the incredibly powerful and sinister Oniku, leader of the extremist group, The CREED. After his shocking revelation, Oniku now has all he needs to launch a crippling attack at the heart of Lagoon City, an attack that would be felt across the nation of Nigeria. Can Wale finally become the hero he has always avoided but was always meant to be in time to stop the inevitable? And what role does the combat adept Fury play in all this? Only time will tell.
The support I’ve gotten so far for this project has been nothing short of amazing. Because of the fans that have tweeted, retweeted, shared and blogged about E.X.O. huge news outlets have gotten on the E.X.O. bandwagon!
“Wale Williams, and his setting of ‘Lagoon City’ is to Lagos what Gotham City is to New York.” | Forbes
"E.X.O. – The Legend of Wale Williams is the fast-paced, afro-futuristic graphic novel from Roye Okupe.” | CNN
"This is a good read if you’re starting out and even if not. You get a chance to see a new superhero be born and who doesn’t enjoy a good origin?” | Comixology
“The designs are very slick and futuristic and ignore some of the design stereotypes which frequently turn up in many ‘African set’ productions created by less intimate creators. At an initial glance, it has all of the fast paced action and hi-tech superhero antics that you would expect of most animated action series on Cartoon Network or NickToons, only it is featuring a brand new hero for a brand new era.” | The Examiner
Here's a quick 3 minute teaser of the animated short:
The majority of the money would be put towards the printing of E.X.O. Part Two. See the full breakdown below:
- Campaign Fees (7%) - Kickstarter fees & credit card processing fees
- Rewards/Miscellaneous (20%) – T-shirts, posters, DVDs, shipping rewards etc.
- Printing - (73%) - It will take roughly 2 months to have the books printed and shipped
I truly feel like I have the best team on the planet. Without them, none of this would be possible. These guys are no joke, and take what they do seriously. They do a great job by giving African art the respect it deserves and I can proudly say that they are among the most talented artists on the continent.
- Ayodele Elegba: Editor/Letters
- Sunkanmi Akinboye: Pencils & Inks (Artists of the year | Comic Panel Awards)
- Raphael Kazeem: Colorist (Colorist of the year | Comic Panel Awards)
- Godwn Akpan: Cover(s)
I’m hoping we can reach our goal of $6,000 in time for us to strive for some really awesome stretch goals.
- Should we reach $8,000 I will be donating 15 books to a local library and another 15 to a local high school to give out to kids & youths (Just like with the previous campaign)! So what do you say? How bout we get some kids reading E.X.O. ***DONE!
- Should we reach $10,000 I will be giving out additional exclusive Kickstarter ONLY character posters (EXO, FURY or ONIKU).
- Should we reach $12,000 something amazing will happen. I will be giving EVERYONE a poster to my unreleased, never seen/heard, newest superhero project titled MILKAH. If we reach this goal the YouNeek YouNiverse will officially be expanding sooner than I anticipated.
Set in fifteenth century Nigeria, Malikah: Warrior Queen follows the exploits of Queen and military commander Malikah, who struggles to keep the peace in her ever expanding kingdom. The story takes place in the same universe (The YouNeek YouNiverse) as the E.X.O. series, roughly 500 years before the events of Lagoon City.
Because of the support we've received from awesome fans, we've been able to achieve some pretty amazing things!
Risks and challenges
My hope is obviously for everything to go according to plan without any hiccups, but in reality you cannot plan for every contingency. There are certain factors that could get in the way of progress (e.g international printing/shipping issues). However, having run a successful Kickstarter before, I know how to avoid many pitfalls. My goal is to handle any issues, should they arise in a professional manner by sending out daily messages via the Kickstarter updates thread. I believe in 100% transparency and you guys deserve nothing less. I intend to keep every backer, fan and supporter informed by providing updates on a regular and timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
