Safe Travels

Posted by Kazu Kibuishi (Creator)

Hi everyone!  Kazu here.  As we ship books out to backers, we would like to hear from you about whether or not the books arrived safely.  We understand that some packages will not make it in pristine condition, and we will resend packages if the condition of the book does not meet your expectations.  If our current delivery method is resulting in too many damaged books, then we will need to reassess the packing materials and method of delivery.  In any case, we want to make sure you're happy with the final product, and we want to work to do this right, so please send us feedback!  We're learning how to do this better as we go.

Hey everyone,

So we've started the long fulfillment process for the books!  I wanted to post an update to let you all know how this is going to work.

There are only two of us at the studio right now, and we have to pack each and every one of these orders ourselves, so we've been trying to find ways to automate or expedite as much of the process as we're able.

In order to fulfill such a huge volume of orders we signed up for Endicia, a print-your-own postage service. This way we can input addresses directly into the program, pay for postage and slap it on each package without having to visit the post office. Pretty slick.  Still time consuming, but much less so than bringing each package to the post office for processing.

In order to make all of that run smoothly, I've been parsing through all of the survey information for the last couple weeks, putting everything into several excel spreadsheets that we can pull directly into the Endicia software.  It's been a time consuming process, but it's absolutely been worth it so far.

Kazu is still in the midst of signing books. He has over 1200 books to sign/sketch in and he's about halfway through right now. Thankfully he's pacing himself pretty well!

Because most of the orders are in the first two pledge tiers, and the we're starting with fulfilling the first pledge level and working our way up.  I've gone through and packed all of the orders in the first tier.  Tomorrow we'll print postage, slap labels on, and bring them to the post office to be shipped out!  After that it's on to signed copies, which is going to be the bulk of the work.

If you guys still haven't filled out your survey please do!  Just visit the Kickstarter site and there should be a banner at the top of the page requesting your survey information.  For everyone who filled out their surveys already, thank you so much.  You've made my job much easier :)

I'll post more info as we start shipping books.  If you guys have any specific questions feel free to leave a comment or send me an email at jason(at)

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

Books have arrived!

Posted by Kazu Kibuishi (Creator)

Hey everyone,

The books are here!  We unloaded them this morning, and in case you were wondering what 4,000 books looks like, here's your answer:

The final books are gorgeous.  Somehow they look even better than the advance copies we received a few weeks back.  And it's nice to be able to have a stack of Daisy Kutter books on the shelf!  Until today we only had 7 copies of the book in the studio.

Now that the books are in, we still have some work to do.

We're currently organizing our fulfillment process here at the studio, trying to get everything sorted out in order to make shipping nearly 2500 books (!!!) a more streamlined process.  In the meantime, Kazu has started on the over 1000 signed and sketched copies of the book we'll be shipping out.

Kazu has also been working his way through the original art pieces.  Here's a sample of some of the Character Duos he's finished.  It's rare for Kazu to do commissioned artwork, but he's really been enjoying working on these pieces and I think it shows!

I sent surveys out to all the backers this morning to collect shipping addresses.  We're still on track, hoping to start shipping in a week or two with the majority of books leaving the studio in early October.  The sooner you give us your shipping address, the sooner we can get the book to you, so please respond to the survey as soon as possible so we can start organizing everything on our end.

It's been a long and exhausting venture into the realm of self-publishing, but having a direct connection to our audience has been a fantastic experience.  Thank you all again for your support, and thank you so much for your patience!  We couldn't have done this without you.

If you have any questions or comments about your order, feel free to post a comment, send a message, or email me at jason(at)

Thanks guys!

---- EDIT ----

Just a quick amendment to let you all know that Kazu has been doing much better.  He and Amy just had a second (adorable) baby at the end of August so they have been in and out of the studio recently, but his health and memory continues to improve despite the lack of sleep.  Thank you all again for your well wishes!  It really means a lot to him and Amy.

Proofs are in!

Hi everyone!

This is Jason again.  First, I want to thank you all so much for your support and well-wishes.  Kazu has been doing much better.  The biggest recovery hurdle has been some short-term memory loss, which is typical with this type of disease, but he's improving every day and thankfully there won't be any lasting effects.  He's been back at work for the last couple weeks and it has been really great to have him in the studio.

So, in more exciting news, this past week we received advance proof copies of the book! I was really anxious to finally have a look at the finished product, and it looks absolutely gorgeous in print.

Here's a sample of some of the interior pages, both black and white and color.  As you can see, the 4-color printing allows us to get much richer tones and greater value contrast than if we had printed in 1-color black.  And the color stuff just looks fantastic.  I'm so glad we didn't have to convert it to black and white!

So now that we have okayed the proof, I can let you all know that the books are on track to arrive at our studio in mid-September, which means we'll be able to start shipping rewards shortly after that.  Once we've received the books I'll send out a survey for addresses and other relevant information.

This week I also did a raffle for 10 original CHARACTER DUOS pieces.  The pool included everyone who pledged for a signed and sketched copy of Daisy Kutter.  I've gotten in touch with everyone individually in order to work out requests for their pieces, so check your messages!

I'll be sure to keep you all posted as we get closer to shipping, but if you have any questions in the meantime feel free to post a comment or send us a message.  Thanks again for your support!

Status Report!

Posted by Kazu Kibuishi (Creator)

Hey everyone!  This is Jason, Kazu's lead production assistant.  I know we've been quiet for the past few weeks, so I wanted to send you all a long overdue update on what's been happening at the studio.

On June 28th Kazu was admitted to the hospital with a case of bacterial meningitis.  After 5 days in the ICU and nearly two weeks of recovery, he's home and resting.  He's been completely cured of the disease and he's slowly getting back to being the same old Kazu, but for the time being he's taking it easy.

In Kazu's absence I've taken over everything production related and tried to keep things moving forward.  Production on the book has continued, so here's an update on our progress over the last few weeks.

First, I know Kazu has talked a little bit about cleanup in these updates, but I wanted to clarify exactly what that means for you guys.  Back when Kazu was first working on Daisy Kutter, he was racing through pages as quickly as possible in order to make extremely tight deadlines for each book.  As a result there wasn't very much time for cleanup, so I've gone back over every page and removed errant pencil marks, specks of dust, and cleaned up the toning to make sure everything reads as clearly as possible.  Here's a before and after example of a panel from the book.

The proofs for the book came in a couple weeks ago and as a result of all this work (and the 4-color printing) they are absolutely gorgeous.  Everything is much cleaner, clearer, and sharper than it has ever been in print.  It feels like Daisy Kutter HD.  Needless to say, we okayed the proofs and the book is off to the printer!

We have also printed the bookmarks and have them in the studio. They look really great, and will definitely be a nice bonus for everyone with signed/sketched copies of the book.

Because we're printing overseas we don't have a clear picture yet for when the books will be in, but I'll be sure and update you all once I have an idea of when we'll get the books in and be able to start shipping.

So what's next?  Soon we'll be sending surveys out to the backers with original art purchases so you can clarify which characters you would like in your piece.  We'll also be doing a random drawing to determine which 10 backers with signed/sketched copies will get an original CHARACTER DUOS piece.

Once we have requests Kazu will start working on the original art while we wait for the books to arrive.  We'll be sure and update with a couple pieces once he has some to show.

We'll also be sending a survey a little later on so you can provide a shipping address for your books.  I'm going to hold off on this until we have an ETA for the books, just in case anyone is moving or needs to change their address before they arrive.

So again, I apologize for the delay on getting all of this information out to you guys.  With everything going on over the last month it's been a little hectic here at the studio.   The books are being printed and I'll be sure to update once we have a more concrete idea of when we will be shipping.

And thank you guys so so much for your patience and support.  We promise the book will be worth the wait.
