We’re making an adaptation of the epic film ‘THE FALL’ for the stage. The play will be a thrilling, visually spectacular, one hour ‘feast your eyes on this’ spectacle with live actors on stage performing alongside original animations (projected onto a backscreen), live music (specifically composed for the show) and a projected seven year old actress (!!). We have a slot in the heart of London, at Theatro Technis in Camden this June for a preview and we hope to continue The Fall journey well into the future.
When Tarzan, the director, watched the film two years ago, he knew that there was something unique about the story. It begins with a man (Roy) who has lost all hope for life. After a failed suicide attempt, he lies in hospital, aimless, motionless, despondent. It is here that he meets a young patient of seven (Alexandria) who he tricks into bringing him painkillers with the intention of overdosing. He manipulates her attention by telling vibrant stories about the journeys of five heroes (represented by ever-changing animation on a screen behind him and accompanied by an original score of live music). As Alexandria becomes attached to these characters, Roy finds himself inspirited by her goodwill and innocence. Yet he finds his cynicism and dejectedness seeping into his storytelling – the fate of the heroes kept hostage by his increasingly despondent mind-set.
Tarsem has encouraged us from the inception stages of this project, sharing insightful anecdotes about making his passion project (filmed over 65 locations, taking over 10 years to create and 7 years to cast!) It’s no wonder that the film has such an incredible following and a huge fanbase. We are privileged to have the rights to make a stage version of such a masterpiece.
One of the main themes of ‘The Fall’ that we found naturally resonated with the team, was the attention on suicide and depression, and the idea of finding hope in unusual places. Here, we have Hope in the profile of a little girl who enters the life of a man with Despair. His Dark storytelling is tailgated and gradually infected by the Hope the little girl innocently imposes on him. The message: Everyone can find their own vehicle for hope - both within themselves and through the support and empathy of others – and although often a toilsome process, we can all persevere.
The little girl will appear as a projection on a screen seamlessly interacting the main actor and the stories he entrances her with will unfold as ever-changing animations. The live musicians on stage will provide an original soundtrack accompanying the live action and animated sequences. In the entrance of the theatre, we will also be running a small exhibition of inspiring artwork, uplifting poetry and insightful articles that aim to both de-stigmatise mental illness and promote hope and growth. This echoes the vision of our theatre company, which is to present work that is raw, honest and has at its core the desire to fundamentally challenge ourselves and our audiences.
We wouldn't be able to take one step further, if it were not for this wonderful team of energised, excitable, driven, but most of all, empathetic and humble set of people. This team of artists is working (as we speak!) to make this project a reality. Please welcome and endorse:
ANIMATORS Freddee S Lewis, Andreea Stan and Diana Garcia who will develop the ever-changing animation that chronicle the main character’s heroic tale of despair and hope.
COMPOSER and performer Max Wilson who will compose an exquisite original score of music to emphasise and expose the truly epic quality of this story.
Keira Jozana (our 7 year old superstar!) who will appear as a projection, performing on a screen beside the two profoundly genuine ACTORS Bekisizwe Goro, Robert Rowe and MUSICIANS Ruth Wilson, Rafael Bolivar and Sophie Yelland.
FILMMAKER Sandeep Gill who will single-handedly film, direct, edit and time all of these complex and stunning scenes.
SET DESIGNER Rain Wu who will create and construct the framework to this epic and wondrous tale.
LIGHTING DESIGNER extraordinaire, Nick Goodman and handyman Nima Rashti who will illuminate this play with integrity, grace and impeccable timing.
DIRECTOR Tarzan, who will unite all artistic teams and guide the one true narrative of the play.
The PRODUCTION TEAM: Imogen Lewis, Elizabeth Daramola, Katy Eynon, Malena Arcucci, Valentina Perri-Khoo and Becca Vince who will push the boundaries of the financially conceivable and move mountains to have this show seen by as many people as possible!
