The Occasional Symphony opens its first season with a Halloween concert featuring a silent horror film and music by Baltimore composers

About this project

About our project

The Occasional Symphony will open its season with a Halloween concert on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 2640 Space in Baltimore, Md.

The Occasional Symphony will accompany the 1920 silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Set to music by Baltimore's own composers, Scott Lee and James Young, and the most ominous music from the 19th and 20th centuries, this screening includes a creepy carnival, a murder and an infamous sleepwalker.

We started this group as a way to facilitate the community coming together and connecting through music on days that are important in all of our lives. Without your support this concert will not be possible. Help support us as we celebrate All Hallows Eve--we're just sorry Halloween only comes once a year.

What do we need the money for anyway?

Putting on a quality concert is not easy. Putting on a quality concert as a new music ensemble is even harder, as we do not have income from previous  ticket sales.

For this concert (and every concert we will present) there are obvious expenses, such as renting the venues and compensating musicians, and then there are some less apparent costs. Our $5,000 request for funding would provide the following:

  • Venue rental
  • Compensating the musicians
  • Equipment rental: stands, stand lights and large percussion instruments
  • Transportation fees for chairs, stands and large instruments
  • Printing of programs, flyers and posters
  • Printing and binding of sheet music

We sincerely thank you for your consideration and support.

Why we are here

The idea for the Occasional Symphony was ignited a little over a year ago. Founders and conductors Norman Huynh and Stephen Mulligan were looking for a memorial concert to attend on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. They were surprised that they were not able to find any musical event commemorating  the day. Immediately, Norman and Stephen got to work on putting together a  concert. Although it was a last-minute endeavor, the concert was a great success. That night it became clear that there was something lacking in the community--a place for the community to come together through music on days that are important in all of our lives. The Occasional Symphony was born.

About the Occasional Symphony

The Occasional Symphony celebrates diverse holidays by presenting imaginative concerts at distinctive venues.

Founded this year in Baltimore, Md., by a group of seven, the Occasional Symphony aims at a new model for presenting orchestral concerts. Central to the mission of the Occasional Symphony is that each program is designed so that the music, venue and holiday work together to create a connection within our community.
