We want to create comprehensive fix guides - not just for older PC titles, but for brand new PC games when they are released.

UPDATE: Now that the project reached its goal within 6 hours, we've decided to release 100 additional t-shirts as rewards at the £20 reward level. Let's fix PC gaming!

What is PCGamingWiki?

"Step in the PCGamingWiki, which aims to make the biggest collection of PC tweaks, tips, and hardware guides on the Internet." - Alasdair Duncan, Destructoid

PCGamingWiki is website dedicated to providing a central location for bugs, fixes and workarounds for every single PC game. The resource is completely user-editable, meaning that anyone can keep articles up to date, as new mods, fixes and workarounds are developed.

What's our goal?

"If they manage it, this could be one of the internet’s greatest resources." - Jim Rossignol, Rock Paper Shotgun

We want..

..to be the first thing PC gamers think of when they encounter problems or discover new fixes..

  • we don't want PC gamers to spend hours Googling for 'why is my screen black' or 'what is error 0x0000021a' or 'where the hell did my savegames go' - we want all this information in one place, for every single PC game that exists.

..to list DRM and unlock quirks for every edition of every PC game..

  • we never want confusion about what DRM a game has, what service it unlocks on, where the 'best' place to buy a game is and whether some insurance company is squatting on the rights to a game which you can only access by praying to the Norse pirate gods.

..to provide guides for the best PC game experiences possible..

  • we want comprehensive install guides for every game, whether it's a bad port of a modern game, or an older game with amazing content restored by the determined PC gaming community - we want PC games to be experienced in the best way possible on the largest resolutions and the latest operating systems.

..to be as important to the games industry as Wikipedia is..

  • we want developers and publishers to link to our articles directly, and we want to be acknowledged by stores like Steam, GOG.com and Amazon.com, especially when games are released that require significant tweaking to work on modern machines.

What do we cover?

"PCGamingWiki is a vast source of information every PC gamer needs to know about." - Adam Ames, TruePCGaming.com

Here's a sample of some of our work:

We also cover Mac and Linux games, as well as general PC gaming guides, such as implementing borderless fullscreen windowed and save game cloud syncing to every game.

New games to encourage new contributors

"At this rate PCGamingWiki could one day achieve its lofty goals, thanks in no small part to the passionate PC gaming community." - Mike Fahey, Kotaku

Our most popular articles are from game released in the last 3 months. We need to get games into the hands of our most dedicated editors when the fix articles are needed the most - when games are just released.

Google Whitepaper - Understanding the Modern Gamer

To achieve our goal of covering every single PC game, we need to boost our visitor numbers and attract more people to contribute. Each new person that visits PCGamingWiki to fix the latest released game has the potential to be a new contributor.

On some days, we'll receives less than 10 edits in total

What funding will pay for

  • £500 will go towards funding a series of at least x15 high quality articles on brand new games, which will be sourced at up to £30 each
  • each article will be based on a major PC game release that will be carefully assessed and chosen
  • a nominated member of our editing team will thoroughly write, test and seed a high quality game fixes article
  • every completed article will be released onto PCGamingWiki for free
  • the community will be able to keep the article up to date, as new mods, patches and fixes are developed
  • increased traffic and visibility will encourage more people to turn to PCGamingWiki to fix their games.

What success means

"PCGamingWiki helped me out on multiple occasions already, and I think it's going to be an invaluable resource in the future." Craig Lager, GamingDaily

If we succeed in collecting every single fix into one place, it'll mean never digging around endless forum threads, or getting lost in pages of blog comments, or getting enraged by 'nvm I fixd it' posts.

Our resource will make it easier for everyone, including newcomers, to fix their issues by only needing one resource to go to - making PC gaming more about gaming, and less about how good your searching skills are.

Contribute to the project

If you don't have the money to spare to make a pledge, then why not contribute an edit? No account is required.

Don't feel like learning how to edit MedaWiki code? Why not help out by linking to one of our game articles in a forum? Remember, you can Google 'game title + PCGW' to find any of our pages.

Follow our Twitter feed @PCGamingWiki and RT us when you can.

If you'd like to donate your time, we are accepting applications for writers to take on game review code and seed high quality articles into the wiki. Any qualified person can as long as you can display evidence of high quality editing of the site.

Can't you get review code from publishers or developers?

We are eternally grateful for the generous support and review codes from publishers and developers like Paradox and Wadjet Eye Games. However despite our best efforts, our requests for review code from the biggest PC gaming entities such as Blizzard, Rockstar, Square and Activision, fall on deaf ears.

Unfortunately, we simply do not have the resources to buy review code for every game, which is why we've turned to the community for help and support.

T-shirt reward

We have fantastic high quality Fruit of the Loom t-shirts available in your choice of sizes from S-XXL available for those who pledge to the £20 or £60 pledge levels. (Many thanks to Tom Fletcher for designing the t-shirt and logo.)

Testimonials

Ethan Lee, Humble Bundle porter and owner of The Big List of 3rd Party DRM on Steam

Getting good, proper information for PC games is hard. Really, really hard. As the maintainer of The Big List of 3rd Party DRM on Steam, I can find getting information on that aspect of PC gaming alone is painfully difficult. When I first saw PCGamingWiki, I thought it was just plain insane. Then I actually looked into who Andy was.

This guy isn't just a passionate PC gamer, documentation and information science is literally his profession. If any site is going to be covering this type of thing at this scale, it's going to be one run by someone like Andrew Tsai.

On top of just getting the documentation there, finding a way to get people to read it is another hurdle. As someone who now makes (or rather, ports) games and actually writes the README files, I still don't always read the README for games. But I do go to the wiki every time. That's how powerful it is. It's powerful enough to where I actually wrote the documentation for Vessel over there! So far it seems to be working pretty well, too.

Not every developer can do this though, so give these guys the power to do it themselves. Documentation is important, and this is a really important site to support in whatever way you can.

About Andrew Tsai

You may recognise him from this viral video (below). He also runs FTLWiki, and has occasionally written for Rock Paper Shotgun and PCGamesN.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

In the event that a writer is not able to contribute an article, additional review code will be sourced. Ever effort will be kept by Andrew Tsai, the founder of PCGamingWiki, to make sure articles are written and published as close as possible to the release date of new games and fulfil the aims of the project. More details about review code distribution is available on the PCGamingWiki website.

PCGamingWiki's hosting costs are paid through advertising revenue.
