Act 1, Shakespeare's abridged. Act 2, modern noire comedic adaptation by Bruce Kane. Kickstarter is to raise $$ for costumes and set!
The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre in Gainesville, FL is staging a production of Hamlet this season and we need your help to make it a reality!
The ART is a 70 seat all-volunteer run community theatre in Gainesville, FL. For several years now the ART has relied on local, state, and national grants to fund our productions, however in recent years the funding of those grants has all but dried up. We are still able to stage shows due to the wonderful sponsors and donors that we have, however getting costumes and sets built for those productions has been a huge struggle these days.
We're hoping that the Kickstarter community can help us fix that problem for the closing show of the 2011-2012 season! With a cast of over 20 people, and two distinct costume styles the challenge is not insurmountable, but is still not an easy task.
Our goal is to raise $550 through kickstarter, this will directly fund our costume shop and set design teams. Any funding we receive in addition to our goal will be used to purchase advertising in local newspapers and other media outlets to promote the show. None of the ART's actors, technical crew, or general staff will be paid from these funds, all the money will go towards the production costs themselves!
Thank you for your consideration, and we'll see you at the theatre!
About the Show:
This show is split into two distinct acts, each with a vastly different feel from the other.
The first act will largely be the traditional Hamlet as written by William Shakespeare, but will be edited and condensed to fit into one act. The drama and tragedy will be real and this act will be quite serious.
The second act is an adaptation by Bruce Kane and is set in 1940s Chicago/”Denmark”. The main character is Justin Thyme, a “fictional private eye” who is stylized after characters often played by Humphrey Bogart and other Film Noir P.I.s. The show is a comedy and all of the principle actors from the first act will reprise their roles again in the second act, only they will not be tragic characters, but rather comedic in nature.
