"Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't to be doing things that required pants." --Scout Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

Update!

Scroll down to meet the Camper, our new Reward!

Hi! I'm Clare. I'm glad you're here.

As a kid, I was pretty shy and quiet, much more likely to be called a bookworm than a tomboy. As I've gotten older, though, I've realized I'm a little bit of both. Sure, some tomboys are loud and outgoing, but that's not what defines us. What we are is curious, brave, and resilient. We are voyagers and explorers. We want to know what's up that tree, across that bridge, around that bend. We're always scouting--not for enemies or battlefields, but for knowledge, experience, and above all, adventure.

Scout's Honor is my big adventure. I started this line because I want to create high-quality, well-fitting clothes that reflect the tomboy spirit. A lot of us have curves, or small frames, or both, but so many of the clothes we love aren't made for us. Instead, they're patterned to fit bodies that are straight up-and-down, with proportions that are too big in one place and too small in another. I'm taking the clothes you love, and making them for you.

(Oh, and for the record, I think Scout is wrong. Some people can do plenty in a dress. But it should be up to you to choose.)

I'm starting Scout's Honor with two styles: the Scout and the Wrangler.

But first: the Camper!

But before we get to the those two, let me introduce you to our newest style, the Camper. The Camper's actually been around for awhile. I originally made it just for me. But I wear it everywhere, and everyone loves it, so now I'm sharing it with you!

Like the Scout (see below), it will have cuffed short sleeves and a contrast inner collar stand and button on the neutral (left-over-right) side. Unlike the Scout, it will have just one open pocket, on the left. No sleeve patches. It will be available in the maroon plaid seen above, as well as the green plaid seen in the navy Wrangler.

....and now back to

The Scout

The Scout is based on traditional scouting shirts, with a bowed side seam to accommodate curves in the chest and hip.

  • 100% cotton brushed French twill (heavier than a dress shirt, lighter than a work shirt, surprisingly soft to the touch)
  • Available in khaki, moss, grey, and maroon
  • Sizes XS-XL (size chart below)
  • Ethically manufactured in San Francisco, CA

The Wrangler

The Wrangler is a western-style shirt with fit details in the cross seam and a slight flare at the hem to accommodate curves.

Note: These samples button right-over-left (the "womenswear" way), but the final version will button left-over-right (the "menswear"/neutral way).

  • 100% cotton
  • Available in green plaid + navy twill, maroon plaid + blue chambray, or maroon plaid + red twill
  • Sizes XS-XL (size chart below)
  • Ethically manufactured in San Francisco, CA

Rewards!

All rewards include shipping within the US. You'll receive a survey at the end of the campaign asking for your size and color preferences.

The Camper is available in XS-XL, maroon plaid or green plaid.

Or mix it up:

  • $50+: Scarf + Mug
  • $114+: Scout + Scarf
  • $124+: Wrangler + Scarf
  • $160+ Scout + Wrangler
  • did I forget a rad combination? Let me know and we'll figure it out.

And for the very intrepid:

You and one guest will be invited to join Clare and a friend for a day of adventuring in Golden Gate Park. We'll pick up a picnic lunch in the Inner Sunset, enjoy it in the San Francisco Botanical Garden, then visit the California Academy of Sciences for an afternoon of learning, adventure, and penguins. We'll top it off with ice cream from Twirl & Dip. Scout's Honor will cover all food costs and admission fees during the adventure. Backer is responsible for transportation to and from the Inner Sunset District of San Francisco. The adventure will take place on a mutually agreed upon date in 2013 or 2014.

Your Support

Thank you so much for your support. It means the world to me. By backing this project, you're not only helping bring Scout's Honor to life, you're also supporting female entrepreneurship, personal expression, and local manufacturing. All good things!

Reaching my Kickstarter goal will allow me to produce a minimum run of the Scout and the Wrangler, in five sizes each, in the colors described.

$8,800 will help cover the following expenses:

  • finalizing patterns, grading, marking, and final samples
  • fabric and trim for the minimum run of both styles
  • cutting, sewing and finishing
  • other rewards (postcards, mugs, perhaps even more adventures!)
  • packaging and shipping
  • Kickstarter and Amazon fees

Surpassing this goal will mean more designs, cuts, sizes, or possibly all of the above.

FAQs (frequently anticipated questions)

You mentioned a size chart?

Yes! Here it is.

Have you considered offering a more inclusive size range?

Yes! This has always been one of my major goals with Scout's Honor. Because it's such a small company (it's just me!), I'm starting out with a quote-unquote standard size range. If you love these shirts but don't see your size, please reach out to me via Kickstarter's "contact me" link on the sidebar or through the contact info on my website. If the interest is there, I will make every effort to respond to it. I don't know whether it's within the scope of this Kickstarter--this will depend both on how quickly we reach our goal and how much feedback I get from you--but please know that it's important to me.

Do you really play the banjo?

Sadly, no. During college, I interned at the C&O Canal National Historical Park and taught myself to play Darling Clementine and a few other banjo tunes for our visitors. But those skills are long gone. The song you hear in the video is Cluck Old Hen, a late 19th-century traditional tune performed by Banjo Brad.

THANK YOU!

With major gratitude to Sherilyn, Stephanie, Liz, my fabulous models and fit models, everyone at 1564MRKT, City College, and a bazillion others. You. Are. The. Best.

Risks and challenges

I've already developed strong working relationships with pattern makers, fabric vendors, sewers, and many others who will help make this line a reality, but you never know when someone might shut down, discontinue stock, or go on a very long vacation. Fortunately, I have access to a network of industry professionals and all-around great people. Whether it's through friends and personal contacts in the industry or through one of the professional organizations in the area, I will be able to find new or additional suppliers and contractors should I need them.

I have set an official delivery goal of late November. My current timeline has me shipping out a bit earlier, but breathing room is always good. If the project or any part of it is delayed beyond November, my backers will be the first to know the whens, wheres, and whys of the situation, and what I'm doing to make it right.
