“Vivacious, bubbly, and a bit dizzy, David Drake’s Tawny Heatherton has captured the attention, and hearts, of this community.” - Stephen Desroches, Provincetown Magazine, Sept 15, 2011
A blonde wig worn backwards brought Tawny Heatherton to life.
It started as a lark -- in 2009 at the summer celebration in Provincetown known as Carnival. The following summer, Tawny popped out again for Carnival. Then last summer, she simply refused to go back in the drag bag. That’s when I realized I had a vibrant new theatrical creature on my hands.
Long before I’d performed my solo shows THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w98PAaYYXig) and SON OF DRAKULA, I’d experienced the tremendous power of drag -- how, as a mask, drag could reveal unexpected truths and bring outrageous joy to audiences. I first found this out when I replaced Charles Busch in his long-running VAMPIRE LESBIANS OF SODOM in New York. Then felt it again when I created the role of Miss Deep South in the hit off-Broadway musical PAGEANT. But I’d never written a female character of my own. Until now...
What’s been utterly unique in developing Tawny Heatherton is that she’s been such a community effort! Like bees to honey, every time Tawny steps out in public, people throw their projections, desires and dreams onto her. The quest of Tawny’s soul -- the glamour girl showbiz-surviving facade that belies her hippy girl wonder-of-the-world core -- evolved as the community began to interpret, interact with, and embrace Tawny. She continued to grow and expand as she appeared at dance clubs, in fashion shows, at art openings, by hosting the Tennessee Williams Theater Festival awards show, and then headlining her own one-night-only holiday show, A VERY TAWNY CHRISTMAS! As it’s been throughout Tawny’s evolution, community involvement will be key as I venture forward with THE TAWNY HEATHERTON PROJECT, which is why I ask for your support: to help Tawny grow... and go!
Imagining a multitude of avenues for Tawny to explore -- videos, the web, television, films, live performance -- the first major outing of THE TAWNY HEATHERTON PROJECT will be the debut of my new stage show MY TAWNY VALENTINE, premiering in New York City at the Laurie Beechman Theater for three consecutive Fridays this winter: February 17th, 24th and March 2nd at 7:30pm. (http://www.westbankcafe.com/beechman_theatre.html)
Performed as a cabaret "evening" with our headliner and an accompanist, MY TAWNY VALENTINE isbeing presented by the topnotch talents of SpinCycleNYC (http://www.spincyclenyc.com). Still, there are many production expenses for which I’m responsible. These include payments for rehearsal space, a musical director, my stage and video director, musical arrangements, as well as for photography, marketing materials, props, costumes, hair and makeup, and media that involves creating original compositions, sound recording sessions, and creating videos of Tawny’s illustrious career... to date.
And so I'm asking you to help Tawny get her act together -- so that she can begin sharing her sunny, funny, blonde-swept sense of wonder with each and every one of you.
