The legend of the warrior Cu Chulainn is one of the great myths of the Ancient World.
Set in Iron Age Ireland, when the Long Lived still walked the earth, and society still lived by the warrior code.
Today this great legend is barely known outside Ireland, but THIS WASN'T ALWAYS THE CASE. In the eighteenth century the legend was translated into English and immediately spread the length and breadth of Europe, becoming a "bestseller" from Moscow to Madrid.
With Paul Bolger and Barry Devlin’s vivid reimagining and Paul Bolger’s stark and powerful visual style WE WANT TO RE-INTRODUCE this epic of Celtic Ireland to Europe... and introduce it for the first time to the wider world.
WHAT DO WE WANT TO CREATE?
HOUND will be a visually stunning Graphic Novel book that will be made to the highest specification to be a work of art and a MUST-HAVE COLLECTIBLE!!!
WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?
Set in Ancient Ireland HOUND is the first in three Graphic Novels covering the life of Cu Chulainn...
In this forgotten world where war once ruled peace reigns supreme and this is killing Morrigan, last of the Long Lived. In a desperate bid to stay vital she kidnaps baby Cú Chulainn and exposes the child to her darkness imbuing him with unnatural strength and agility, but at a price. He inherits her dark hair, eyes and unpredictable brooding nature. He is not easy to be around. Although physically smaller than his peers he has the status of a giant. Friend and foe fear him. Since killing a Blacksmith’s guard dog and taking it’s place as a child, hence his nickname, HOUND, he has earned a reputation for never letting anyone or anything get in the way of that which he wants more than anything else – to be Champion of the World.
With Cú Cullan seeded as her living weapon Morrigan plans to turn a hard won peace into endless carnage.
PAUL AND BARRY - THE AUTHORS!
Paul Bolger is a director, an animator and an artist.
His first love was, and remains, comics. He worked as an animator at the Don Bluth Studio in Dublin, and once this closed down made the fool-hardy decision to, along with a couple of other of the recently unemployed animators, to set up a studio, which became Ireland’s largest animation studio, Dagda Film, with over 50 animators working for it at its apex. Feeling this was taking him away from the art of animation Paul then toured the world as a free-lance lead animator (Cool World, The Thief and the Cobbler, Werner) and director (Gardens, Happily N’ever After), before strongly feeling it was time to return to Ireland and work on his own projects.
Over the two decades that he was working and living abroad Paul became fascinated with Irish history and mythology, and the period that fascinated him most was the Ireland of the Celts, 2000 years ago, and the story that intrigued him above all others was the Legend of Cu Chulainn.
Paul has been reading the history and the archaeology around the legend all through his adult life, and his desire to bring this story to the world goes beyond being attracted to the surface comic friendly aspects of the myth: Cu Chulainn in some sense seems very modern- a super-hero, combing super powers with a dark and mysterious character - Paul also wants to delve deep into the psyche of Cu Chulainn, and use HOUND as a window into a civilization that echoes down to us through scant myths and the artefacts we have today, but which, after all, is the antecedent, and mixed into, the European culture of the modern world: a culture that has imposed itself and fused with cultures all around the world.
HOUND is a project of a life-time for Paul: the bringing together of his story telling and artistic experience OF THE LAST 30 years!
He has been joined in this project by:
* Barry Devlin - a film & TV writer of note ( A Man of No Importance, The Darlings Buds of May), Director of several documentaries on U2 as well as directing many of their music videos, and he is something of an Irish rock legend himself as the front man of Horslips; and...
* Hugh Welchman - Oscar winning film producer and Creative Director of BreakThru Films.
Campaign coordination: Marcin J. Sobczak (this way publicity)

HOUND GRAPHIC NOVEL
A re-imagining of Cu Chulainn, Ireland’s greatest legend
Story by Paul Bolger & Barry Devlin
Artwork by Paul Bolger
Produced by Hugh Welchman
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge for this project is Paul Bolger being able to take time out from paid work to work on this. £13,000 of the minimum amount is the cost of all the production of the books and the rewards and the postage. £10,000 will go directly to Paul and will allow him to take 3 months off, in which time he will get half of the 160 pages done. The other half will be done in weekends and evenings until it is finished. Any money over the £23,000 will go to buying Paul more time off so that he can finish the book faster. Paul is a very experienced creative professional, and is used to predicting the time taken to do work, and our schedule is based on the rate at which he has done 16 page test, so really the challenge is to make the schedule as predictable as possible by Paul doing as much of it as possible full time, and as little as possible in spaces around other work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
