A few years ago I was working with a middle school youth group. During a discussion they expressed the pain they felt on a daily basis. These students felt that everyone they saw was fine, and that nobody understood what they were going through. My goal with this project is to show that it does not matter how strong one may appear, everyone is human and feels pain. “Painless” will articulate to youth and adults that we are not alone in times of pain. It just appears different in each person's life.
My goal is collect 100+ black and white portraits. This portrait is to portray how the world sees them. It is what the middle schoolers may see when they look at someone they know or don't know. Each person that has a portrait taken of them will then share their story of "pain".
I want you to know how dedicated I am to this project so here is my portrait.
Now here is my story of my "pain".
Now here is my portrait again.
Do you look at me different the second time? Wouldn't it be crazy if we took the time to see people in a different light than gender, race, and religion. Wouldn't it be crazy if we started by seeing a human being with a heart.
I have asked the area photographers to help capture portraits and stories. The area is filled with some great photographers and I think this is a great opportunity for us all to work together to create something beautiful.
Now I'm looking for help to make this installation come to life. Can you imagine a room filled with 100 black and white portraits of everyday people. You may know them or you may not. Then you read the story of a difficult time in their life, like abuse, a loss, personal hate. Maybe it is something you know all to well. Then you look at the photo again. That stranger, that person you may of judged when you walked in, just became someone that you can relate to and understand. They became a friend.
This project will come to life in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at a new venue called, "The Village" - May 19-21 during the Houby Days in the Czech Village area. Over 3,000 people will have the opportunity to pas through and see this collection of images.
This world is filled with a lot of negative right now. Let us come together around the commonality that we all have baggage, that no one is perfect, and we are better as a group when we realize that together.
Risks and challenges
Myself and other photographers are currently collecting photos and stories. I have some that I do not want to share, yet but may give a sample of very soon.
The money needed is to rent a space for the exhibit, print portraits, and begin the creation of a book.
This project will come to life. It is not a matter of "IF" it will happen. The question is "How many people will it reach?" This is a project I believe all ages, gender, race, demographic, EVERYONE can relate to.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
