Tranquility is a solar-powered mock space rover that connects the exploration of humanity's two final frontiers: outer-space and inner-space. The rover tracks hundreds of artificial satellites transforming their paths around the Earth into a musical sequence while droning engine noise. Inside the rover, a single operator can influence the engine noise with the power of his or her own meditation via an EEG brainwave headset. The rover can be steered to areas that better facilitate a feeling of tranquility via an onboard camera system that connects the actions of those around the rover to the pilot’s concentration. With recent cuts to our national space program, Tranquility provides a vehicle for us to contemplate ourselves and our role in the universe.
But, Tranquility desperately needs some improvements. After receiving glowing responses to the project in February at the Harry Wood Gallery, I would like to improve the efficiency of Tranquility's systems, specifically the camera and monitor navigation system. Right now, the computer, monitor, and cameras than allow Tranquility to move use so much power that it can not explore and play audio at the same time. This must be fixed! Since the hull of the rover is already built, I am raising funds to improve the electronics that manage the ship's interactivity.
If you would like to see progress made on Tranquility so far, it will be on view March 9th to March 19th at the Mesa Center for the Arts Festival of Creativity, which is free and open to the public. This event will provide me with another opportunity to test the rover and get feedback on changes that would make this next iteration of Tranquility the best it can be.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my project. If you would like more information about Tranquility, please visit my website. You can also read about the project in the Phoenix New Times or ASU News.
