About this project
About the Author and Photographer
My name is Steve, and I'm a commercial food photographer (www.stevegiralt.com) originally from FL but now based in NYC. I am really passionate about the idea of making a Cuban American cookbook using my family recipes and my photography.
I was born in Miami, but my parents are Cuban, so that makes me a first generation Cuban-American. If you've ever been, you know Miami is the closest to Cuba as you can get without actually going there. All parts of daily life; the people, the food, the music, and so much more are highly influenced by the Cuban culture. This is mostly because of the amount of people, like my parents and grandparents, who immigrated there from Cuba.
So much about my upbringing revolved around the dining table and eating cuban food. Every Sunday we'd go to my grandparents house and my grandfather would cook up some amazing cuban food. We would sit around the dining table for hours talking about our week, and what's going on with other members of our family, and anything else that came up. Food is the center of all my family parties, like on christmas eve we always cook a whole pig to be served for dinner along with a bunch of different sides.
About The Book
As a photographer, I have always wanted to shoot a cuban food cookbook which portrays the memories I have of cuban food, and also portrays the food as works of art. What's different about the book I want to make, is that it's not really a cuban cookbook, but a cuban-american cookbook based around the food I grew up eating in Miami. Most of the recipes in the book are based around my family recipes and food that is dear to my heart.
I take pictures for major clients and publications like food network magazine, Arby's, Kraft, and others in my studio in NYC. Being around food so much and having been lucky enough to work with some amazing food stylists and chefs like Iron Chefs Bobby Flay and Jose Garces, I've learned a lot about making delicious food as well how to photograph food.
What makes this book different in many respects is that it's being written by a cuban american, not a cuban, and photographed by the person writing it. All the food will be shot beautifully, almost like works of art. I really want to make the food come to life and pop off the page in an almost painterly fashion but at the same time portray the recipe's accurately.
How will it Happen
To make all of this happen, I need a group of very talented individuals to help me out. I need a food stylist, to style the food, a prop stylist to source all the surfaces, bowls, glasses, etc, a graphic designer to layout the book and so much more. Expenses start adding up very quickly, especially once it comes time to print the books as printing costs are very expensive. Either way I'm going to shoot this project, as I've invested too much into it not too, the question is whether I'm going to have it printed on a large scale or not.
I Need YOUR help!
I'm doing this kick starter to raise money to help with the costs of shooting, and printing these cookbooks beautifully. My plan is to create a small format, about 8" X 8", soft bound cookbook, that will be about 50-60 pages and will include my very favorite recipes. The recipes are authentic, and delicious, and for the most part easy to recreate at home.
With your donation, you don't just help me create this beautiful project, but you also get some great rewards. You can get signed copies of the book yourself or to give to someone else, prints of the beautiful photographs in the book for your wall, or even have me come over and cook cuban dinner for you.
Remember, if we don't reach our goal we don't get any of the money so please do all you can to help us out. Thank you for your help, and I hope to be sending you the results of this project soon!
Risks and challenges
There is a lot of work to do even after the recipes are finalized and the shoot is finished, but no major obstacles as this is similar to project I have done in the past.
It takes lots of time are effort to make sure the book is laid out correctly, recipes are correctly explained, and the photographs print correctly but nothing I'm not used to doing everyday. The team I have helping with this project is great and will guarantee a beautiful result.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
YES, but you will need to pay for the additional shipping, which depending on location would likely be $10-$20 more for most rewards. Email with questions if you are unsure. Thank you!
This will be a small format soft bound cookbook and it will be printed 8" X 8", with some special one's printed larger and hard bound for those who back us with $150 or more. I am currently planning on having about 20 recipes in the book. May not sound like a lot, but these are the very best Cuban food recipes and each will have an amazing photograph to go with it. On a good day we can get about 7 photos taken in a day considering the time it takes to cook, light, style, and prop each shot. If there is enough interest in the future I would consider doing a bigger book, but I'm starting small for now.
