About this project

DYSTORIA is a 6-axis sci-fi space shooter with a retro-future 80's arcade vibe and a killer synthwave soundtrack.  Go in any direction on any surface. Collect the orbs to unlock the exit portal and blast your way to the next sector. Along the way collect nucleons (the games currency) and salvage (the remains of your enemies) to purchase and upgrade your ship from a line up of 10 different spacecraft (more to come as Free DLC).

DYSTORIA will be released for PC, Mac and Linux.

After being abducted by a UFO you find yourself trapped in a zero-g space labyrinth light years from Earth. The only hope of returning home is to either complete the seemingly endless experiments or find a way to escape.

  • Super Mario Galaxy-like movement using spacecraft that hover on the surface of each sector

  • Puzzle solving level design coupled with space shooter action

  • Incredibly smooth gameplay

  • 10 upgradeable ships with different speed, handling, weapons and shield. (More to come as Free DLC)

  • Multiple enemy types

  • Killer soundtrack featuring 100% original 80's-style synthwave tracks

  • Hidden areas and bonuses in every level

  • Free DLC updates for life

  • SECTORS are completed by collecting three ORBS to open the exit portal which must be reached before the time runs out
  • SHIPS are purchased with NUCLEONS which are earned by completing sectors quickly and finding hidden areas stashed with valuables
  • Anything you destroy explodes into collectible pieces called SALVAGE
  • Collect SALVAGE to upgrade your ships capabilities
  • Use LAUNCH PORTALS to fire your ship to otherwise unreachable parts of the SECTOR
  • SPEED RAYS can be used to blast your ship across gaps
  • Some blocks can be destroyed with BOMBS revealing secret areas to reward exploration

What really stands out in DYSTORIA is the feel of the movement.

Game-feel is one of the top priorities in designing DYSTORIA. We were not happy to have ships that simply move along every surface. We wanted them to float, to hover, to have momentum and physics that make the player believe they are actually out in space with a ship that is electromagnetically coupled to the surface of each sector.  We spent countless hours tweaking and adjusting the controls and physics system to create a seamless experience that immerses the player immediately. It's an experience you need to have for yourself to understand.

We knew as soon as we made the first prototype of Dystoria that we needed to have a whole fleet of ships that look, handle and feel different to accommodate different styles of play and to reward the player as they progress through the game. A lot of effort has been put into the designing, building, texturing and physics of each individual ship.

Tri-Coastal Games is a Indie Game Company situated in Three Hills, a small town on the Canadian Prairies. We are a two-man team consisting of Daryl Wilson and Craig Grierson. We both grew up loving video games and have enjoyed seeing the progression of game technology throughout the decades. Our passion for games has always inspired us to dream of creating our own, so we designed DYSTORIA to recapture what it felt like for us playing games back in the 80's.

My name is Daryl and I'm a husband and father to four avid gamers. Game development started as a side project for me. Until just recently, I was the Executive Director of the Arts Academy in my hometown of Three Hills, where we teach music and art and have an amazing live theatre community. Sadly 2015 was a bad year for the Canadian economy, and as usual, arts funding is the first thing to get cut, so I found myself without a job just before Christmas. We had planned on releasing DYSTORIA many months down the road but with no employment I decided to put everything I had into DYSTORIA.

I have always been an artist. I am a multi-instrumentalist with a background in audio engineering, production and songwriting. I also enjoy graphic design, theatre, dance and well, pretty much any form of art. I've won awards for remixes (LIGHTS - "Toes"), had a song "Summertime" featured in a KFC commercial and have produced albums for several Canadian artists.

I love game development because it allows me to bring so many art mediums together in one amazing package. In a video game you have graphic arts, music, 3D modeling, animation, sound and story, then combine those things in an interactive experience with the player. It's really incredible. I honestly believe that video games are one of the most complex and amazing forms of art in history, which for me means I have to jump right in.

My name is Craig, and I'm a husband and proud parent of a young toddler.  Game development has been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid and I have come a long way since I started, learning and honing my skills over my lifetime. DYSTORIA has been a labor of love and I have poured my passion and strong motivation into it since we started the project back in July 2015.

Up until recently I owned and ran a video rental store in Three Hills called the Video Hut.  I met Daryl while working at the Video Hut and have been working with him on games for 2 years.  We started out developing games in our spare time. For me balancing family life while being a small business owner and trying to find the time to work on game development has been the biggest challenge.  In fact we did a ton of work on DYSTORIA at the Video Hut with people coming and going. Lots of them would stop to ask how the game was coming along, and that was really cool. But now that movie rentals have gone digital, the business was no longer viable so we had to close our doors. That was hard, but it also facilitated a transition into full time game development.

The successful funding of this Kickstarter campaign will allow us to work on Dystoria full time which will greatly speed up production and allow us to create the game the way we envision it. Dystoria has been a labor of love for us and we have poured our passion, time and money into it for the past eight months but now we've reached crunch time. Without funding we cannot continue to work on our game full time.

Since we have been putting so much of our own time and money into the game, our financial needs for the initial release are actually fairly modest.

Here's how we expect to allocate the funding:

Operational costs are the largest expense which is typical in business of any kind. As much as we would love to continue working for free, it's just not feasible, as we both have families with young children that we need to provide for. We plan to invest in marketing, not just with our own time, but in strategic advertising to maximize our exposure during launch. You can't make games without software and up until now we have purchased all our software (and hardware) ourselves but there are a few more tools that are necessary for us to be able to finish. We are also creating all our own sounds and music and game assets except for a few outsourced pieces that we are paying for.

Our funding requirements are so low because we have invested everything we have into getting this far, which is pretty close to finished. We just need a little more to get our game launched successfully.

We started developing Dystoria at the end of July 2015 working on it during our spare time, mostly evenings and weekends.  We thought we could continue working part time indefinitely, however in December Daryl was permanently laid off from his job. Similarly, Craigs video rental business finally reached the end if it's viability and closed just weeks ago. However, we already had a fully playable and stable build with 10 ships, 3 types of enemies and 10 levels. We decided to work on it full time until we ran out of money, and now we've reached that point. Finishing DYSTORIA will be a matter of adding more content to increase gameplay variety including more types of enemies, more levels, upgrades for the ships, and additional bosses. And of course we want to add that extra polish to deliver a game we can be proud of.

We had originally planned to build and launch Dystoria in our spare time as both of us were engaged in full time work. However the opportunity presented itself for us both to be able to focus on the game full time for just a few months, so we decided to go all-in and put everything we had into this game and get it to a release stage as quickly as possible. However, as past experience has taught us, everything (especially in game development) takes longer than you expect, and we knew that the risk we were taking was huge. We are reaching out to Kickstarter for that last push to get us safely to launch, and hopefully to hit our stretch goals to make Dystoria even better which would draw a wider range of gamers.

This Kickstarter campaign is actually about more than just the successful launch of DYSTORIA, it is also about the successful launch and the budding future of Tri-Coastal Games. TCG is a new company, but we are not new to business and have big plans for gaming, VR, and multi-sensory media.

We love Kickstarter because it allows us to build a community that is excited about our project and want to see it develop into something they will enjoy playing.  We are excited about the opportunity to partner with you to make Dystoria all that it can be. With your help we will not only be able to release Dystoria but we will see our dreams of making games for a living come true. Together we can create something extraordinary that we can all be proud of.

Risks and challenges

Risks for this project will include unforeseen delays in the development cycle but we are devoted to pushing forward and clearing all hurdles that may come our way. We have the motivation to see this project through to the end and realize that our reputation is on the table if we do not deliver.

Another risk is that we are a small team. While this allows us great creative freedom, it also means that we each have a lot of different hats to wear. Game development requires a huge range of skills that go far beyond simply making a game. Managing a business, finances and marketing are all vital pieces of the puzzle that need to be kept in balance as the game, our community and our company grows.

We are extremely excited to finish Dystoria and build a community that will come along for the ride.
