About

Board Game Geek TV from GENCON 2014:

Quintessential is an fun, fast alchemy based worker placement and engine building strategy game where players use basic elements to create Aether and ultimately, the Philosopher's Stone to achieve their magnum opus.

Quintessential: The Fifth Element (quin•tes•sen•tial/ kwintə’ senCHəl/) 1. The fifth and highest element in ancient and medieval philosophy that permeates all nature and is the substance composing the celestial bodies 2. The essence of a thing in its purest and most concentrated form

Quintessential is playable by two to five players in about 45 minutes. All players begin as elementary students of alchemy. Players draw from a common store of knowledge and share a laboratory, but it’s up to each individual to determine how best to combine the elements that are available. Players use the element dice in their element pool in formulas either in their personal lab OR the community lab.  Each action requires a lab worker to be placed on the card being activated or claimed for use.  Once used, the element generated can be rolled or free placed on another formula card, potentially completing chain reactions and producing multiple elements at the same time.

A player may also use workers to bid on cards in the bottom row of the tableau.  A successful bid wins the card, and it is usable in the alchemist's personal lab during the next round.  An unsuccessful bid is not a waste, however, as this generates the unstable anti-element.  The anti-element is wild and can be used in any formula as a reactant, but is very volatile and will be destroyed after use.  Sometimes, this will generate even more chain reactions.

As players build their element pools, they can use them to create Aether, the fifth element and the key to winning the game.  There are 2 community forges and each player has a personal forge that can create the fifth element.  The community forges can only be claimed once per round, so players must plan carefully and bid for the first player token when they need to gain the advantage.

The rules are pretty simple, but here is the rule book, current as of Feb 10, 2015.  The game has been in production for 4 years, and there are minor changes if you owned or played the original version.  We encourage you to download them right here.

PRINT -N- PLAY!

Everyone who pledges will receive the print and play files to play at home with a bunch of dice and tokens that you have at home.  In fact, what the heck, here is the print and play for anyone and everyone to download and play at their leisure.  The graphics may not match the rules exactly (especially the cards with 5th element dice on them, some are rainbow and some are white, all getting finalized) but the mechanics of each card remains the same. This sucker is huge, at 700 MB, so it will take a few minutes.

AND AGAIN, JUST THE RULES

The purpose of Quintessential is to combine the more common classic Greek elements into the elusive 5th Element. The first player to produce five copies of the 5th Element and one anti-element to create the Philosopher's Stone wins the game.

The elements are represented by dice, the four common elements (represented by red, blue, yellow and green dice), and two more exotic elements; the anti-element (represented by the black dice), and the elusive and crucial 5th element (represented by the white dice).  Will you be the master alchemist and achieve your magnum opus?

---"this really hits on something innovative in using your existing dice to create more dice almost every turn."  - Daniel Zayas, The Meeple Mechanic

Stretch Goals are a given for many board game products, and Quintessential is no exception, here is a listing of the additional components we can place in the game.  Currently, the game will carry a $39.99 MSRP in stores, so Kickstarter backers are already getting a discount, but the additional components will raise the MSRP, creating a bigger discount if you pledge now!

  • $30,000 - The Worker Tokens will be upgraded to colored beads from the current flat tokens AND Velvet dice bags will be included to hold the starting lab pool for each player.
  • $35,000 - The Dice will be frosted instead of the opaque colors that are currently included.
  • $40,000 - Dice Cups will be added to shake and roll your dice.
  • $45,000 - An in-box Tray will be added to help hold all the components, and a Solitaire variant of the game will be introduced.
  • $50,000 - The BIG KAHUNA.  Did you notice that cool wooden box shaped like a die that the prototypes are packaged in during the BGG.TV video?  Yes, everyone gets THAT BOX!  This raises the game to a $59.99 MSRP, and you still pay just $35!

Risks and challenges

This is the 4th game produced by Gamer Nation Studios, and as such we are getting experienced at it. However, art delays and overseas shipping delays are not uncommon in this type of endeavor. Also, the production cycle will be very close to the Chinese New Year, and this also poses a risk of delay. We can foresee many issues now, and try to avoid them, but in the end we are dependent on the throughput of our overseas partners. Our factory is well seasoned, and prints for Iello (King of Tokyo) and other large manufacturers, so we are very confident that the quality will be up to the usual standard of a Gamer Nation Studios product. We are also teaming up with a new provider of backer pledge management called Crowd Control. Their system promises that the shipping delays we encountered for some backers in Eons:Cosmic Expansions will not happen again. Speaking of shipping, we will also be using Amazon Fulfillment as our agent to ensure that our entire backer base receives the game on time. We have learned a great deal over our past several projects - and Amazon's fulfillment experience is something we're proud to leverage for this project!
