I am committed to the idea that every contributor should be paid for their writing—both professionals and first-time submitters.

We've been delighted and overwhelmed by the response from supporters who are disappointed that this project did not fund successfully. It’s okay! There are other ways to support Spark: A Creative Anthology! Visit our support page to learn more, or contact us to subscribe to announcements!

Update: See the recent article about us in The San Francisco Chronicle or read the Open Letter To Our Friends!

Update: Margaret Dilloway, author of novels The Care and Handling of Roses With Thorns and How To Be An American Housewife, has completed and contributed a short story for Spark, Volume I!

Update: When we succeed, we're KickingItForward.

The next great wave of authors and poets is here.

Spark: A Creative Anthology is a high-quality, paying market where emerging authors and poets are published alongside respected and established writers. While Spark actively encourages submissions from new writers, regardless of age, when you support Spark you get quality writing and artwork across all genres—from professionals and amateurs alike.

We publish writing worth reading.

We set the bar high to encourage aspiring writers to continue to excel and develop their talents, and to maintain a publication to which established professionals are excited to submit.

For Volume 1, we already have a featured, previously-unpublished short story under contract from Todd Walton, author of Inside Moves, The Writer’s Path, Buddha In A Teacup, Under the Table Books, and more.

We've been endorsed by Margaret Dilloway, author of The Care and Handling of Roses With Thorns and How to Be an American Housewife, who has written and contributed a new short story specifically for Spark. Margaret says, "As an alumna of the California State Summer School for the Arts, I'm thrilled about the opportunity each volume of 'Spark: A Creative Anthology' will provide to emerging young writers!"

In addition to pieces from these established authors for our first volume, we have accepted great new work from five poets and five writers for Volume I, an anchor story from Alexis Hunter for Volume II, and cover artists selected for Volume IVolume II and Volume III.

You can be a part of this when you support Spark.

Making a Difference

This Kickstarter project is about more than just launching the anthology and publishing some collections of writing.

It's about making a difference in the lives of up-and-coming writers and artists—by helping them gain experience in the publication process and providing feedback on their efforts. Spark is listed as

It's about paying our contributing authors a professional rate for their work.

Spark is a self-funded, volunteer effort. I am paying contributors in-kind or semi-professional rates from my own pocket: currently 1¢ per word or $10, whichever is more. That's not enough. Authors, poets, and artists who meet the quality standards of Spark deserve professional payment, regardless of past experience. When you pledge to back this project, not only are you getting writing you want to read, you're also rewarding the writers who've contributed and ensuring the longevity of this project.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Once the project is fully funded, we still face a few challenges. While I like to be optimistic and believe that all of my plans will work out, I think it's fair to everyone that mention some of the potential setbacks that may occur, and how we plan to deal with them.

WITHDRAWAL OF CONTENT: Accepted contributors so far have either professionally donated content or agreed to semi-professional payment. There is a risk that any of these contributors could withdraw their submission before publication. However, each contributor has agreed to the Acceptance Terms, which include the following text: "By accepting our offer, you agree that you have the right to license your work to us, that it is not under contract, limitation, or consideration with any other publication, and that you will not withdraw your submission from Spark for 12 months from the date of this acceptance letter."

A contributor could still breach the agreement, but at the very least they have read and accepted these terms.

LACK OF CONTENT: Although submission response so far has been overwhelming, with an average of 30 new submissions a week, there is always the possibility that writers may stop contributing enough to fill ongoing quarterly volumes. A more interesting challenge, however, is reaching out to the younger contributors we are targeting: If we are unable to reach out to and solicit contributions from emerging writers, some of whom—like the very recent CSSSA alumni whose talents we hope to foster—are minors and therefore should not be contacted directly, we may succeed in publishing an interesting and high-quality anthology, but fail to provide the experience opportunity for new writers as we've defined in our goal.

We are working with the CSSSA Foundation and our own personal and professional contacts (including older alumni and former faculty of CSSSA), and leveraging online/social networks to maximize our visibility so that these young writers can find us without requiring us to make the initial direct contact.

( UPDATE 11/12/2012: As of today, we have received 240 submissions, including more than 30 from CSSSA alumni. I am no longer concerned about lack of content. )

PRINTING/DISTRIBUTION ISSUES: We have selected Lightning Source as our printer because of their Responsible Forestry policies and high print quality. In the event that their services become unavailable, we will have to select an alternate printing option such as CreateSpace or Lulu in order to meet demand with minimal downtime.
